The 2022 Rio Grande do Sul state election took place in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil on 2 October 2022. Voters elected a Governor, Vice Governor, one Senator, 31 representatives for the Chamber of Deputies and 55 Legislative Assembly members, with a possible second round to be held on 30 October 2022. Former governor Eduardo Leite, was eligible for a second term and announced that he's running for reelection. [1]

The 2022 electoral process was marked by the succession to the position held by the incumbent governor, Ranolfo Vieira Júnior, from the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB), the running mate of Leite in 2018 Rio Grande do Sul gubernatorial election. He took office on 31 March 2022 with Leite's resignation. For the election to the Federal Senate, the seat occupied by Lasier Martins (PODE), who was elected in 2014 by the Democratic Labour Party (PDT), [2] was at dispute. [3] [4]

Gubernatorial candidates

The party conventions began on 20 July and continued until 5 August. The following political parties have already confirmed their candidacies. Political parties had until 15 August 2022 to formally register their candidates. [5]

Eduardo Figueiredo Cavalheiro Leite is a Brazilian politician and governor of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. During the state's 2018 election, he won with 53.62% of the vote. Leite was elected governor at 33 years old, becoming the youngest governor in Brazil. In July 2021, Leite came out as gay during an interview for the Brazilian talk show Conversa com Bial, becoming the first openly gay governor in Brazil's history, and second openly LGBT governor of this country after Fátima Bezerra of Rio Grande do Norte.

After Leite's resignation in March 2022, Vieira became the Governor of Rio Grande do Sul.

The 2022 Pernambuco state elections took place in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil on 2 October 2022. Voters elected a governor, vice governor, one senator, 25 representatives for the Chamber of Deputies, and 49 Legislative Assembly members. Paulo Câmara, the incumbent governor of Pernambuco, was reelected in the first round in 2018 Pernambuco gubernatorial election, with 1,918,219 votes, the equivalent to 50.70% of the valid votes. He wasn't eligible for a new term, since he ran for governor in 2014 and 2018. In a crowded field, former mayor of Caruaru Raquel Lyra (PSDB) defeated Federal Deputy Marília Arraes (Solidarity) by close to 20 points in the second round. She was inaugurated on 1 January 2023.

The 2022 Bahia state election took place in the state of Bahia, Brazil on 2 October 2022. The elections saw voters choose a Governor and Vice Governor, one Senator, 39 representatives for the Chamber of Deputies, and 63 Legislative Assembly members. The incumbent Governor, Rui Costa, of the Workers' Party (PT), was not eligible for a third term since he ran for governor in 2014 and 2018. In a significant upset, PT nominee and Secretary of Education Jerônimo led Mayor of Salvador ACM Neto in the first round of elections despite the vast majority of registered opinion polls indicating the leadership or even outright victory of Neto. In the end, Jerônimo obtained 49.45% of valid votes to ACM's 40.8%; less than a percentage point within of winning the election in the first round. Nevertheless, as no candidate obtained a majority of the vote, there will be a second round election on October 30 2022.

The 2022 Ceara Gubernatorial election was held in the state of Ceará, Brazil on Sunday October 2. Voters elected the President and Vice President of the Republic, a Governor, Vice Governor of the State and a Senator of the Republic with two alternates, in addition to 22 Federal Deputies and 46 State Deputies. Those elected will take office on January 1 or February 1 of 2023 for terms on office lasting for four years.

The 2024 Porto Alegre mayoral election will take place in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil on 6 October 2024. Voters will elect a mayor, a vice mayor, and 36 councillors. The incumbent mayor, Sebastião Melo, a member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB), was elected in 2020 for his first term and intends to run for re-election. If the most voted candidate on the first round doesn't achieve more than 50% of the votes, a second round will happen on 27 October 2024. The mayor's term will begin on 1 January 2025 and end on 31 December 2028.
