The 2023 season was North West Thunder's fourth season, in which they competed in the 50 over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and the Twenty20 Charlotte Edwards Cup. In the Charlotte Edwards Cup, the side finished third in the group, winning four matches and progressing to the semi-final. [1] In the semi-final, they lost to Southern Vipers by 18 runs. [2] In the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, the side finished seventh in the group, winning three of their fourteen matches. [3]

Contents

The side was captained by Eleanor Threlkeld and coached by Paul Shaw. [4] They played five home matches at Old Trafford Cricket Ground, two apiece at Rookwood Cricket Ground and Stanley Park, and one apiece at Trafalgar Road Ground and Sedbergh School. [5] [6]

Squad

Departures

On 4 November 2022, it was announced that Natalie Brown, Rebecca Duckworth and Alice Dyson had all been released. [7] In July 2023, Phoebe Graham went on loan to Western Storm for four Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy matches. [8] Alex Hartley retired from cricket in August 2023, after taking a break from the game in May. [9] On 8 September 2023, it was announced that the side had loaned Sophia Turner to Northern Diamonds for the remainder of the season. [10]

Arrivals

On 4 November 2022, it was announced that North West Thunder had signed Naomi Dattani, Fi Morris and Tara Norris from Sunrisers, Western Storm and Southern Vipers respectively. [7] On 6 March 2023, it was confirmed that Stephanie Butler, having left Central Sparks at the end of the 2022 season, had joined the side. [11] On 19 April 2023, it was announced that Deandra Dottin had signed for the side as an overseas player for the entire season, alongside Scotland international Hannah Rainey. [12] On 21 April 2023, it was confirmed that Olivia Thomas was in the side's squad for the season. [13] On 28 April 2023, Mahika Gaur was named in a matchday squad for the first time. [14] On 20 May 2023, Olivia Bell was named in a matchday squad for the first time. [15] On 6 June 2023, academy player Sophie Morris was named in a matchday squad for the first time. [16] On 1 September 2023, it was announced that Laura Delany was replacing Deandra Dottin as the overseas player for the side, due to the latter's involvement in the 2023 Women's Caribbean Premier League. [17]

Personnel and contract changes

On 4 November 2022, it was announced that Daisy Mullan had signed her first professional contract with the side. [7] On 23 February 2023, it was announced that a further two players had signed professional contracts, with Liberty Heap and Seren Smale both signing their first such contracts. [18] On 29 June 2023, it was announced that both Danielle Collins and Mahika Gaur had signed professional contracts with the club, Collins until the end of the season and Gaur on a part-time professional deal until the end of 2024. [19] In September 2023, it was announced that Head Coach Paul Shaw was stepping down from his role at the end of the season. [20]

The 2021 Charlotte Edwards Cup, initially named the 2021 Women's Regional T20, was the first edition of the Charlotte Edwards Cup, an English women's cricket Twenty20 domestic competition took place between 26 June and 5 September 2021. It featured eight teams playing in two double round-robin groups, followed by a Finals Day. South East Stars won the tournament, beating Northern Diamonds in the final. The tournament ran alongside the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

The 2021 season was Northern Diamonds' second season, in which they competed in the 50 over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and the new Twenty20 competition, the Charlotte Edwards Cup, finishing as runners-up in both competitions. The side finished second in the group stage of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, therefore progressing to the play-off, where they beat Central Sparks by 6 wickets. The side topped the group stage of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, winning six of their seven matches and therefore progressing straight to the final. In the final they faced Northern Diamonds, who made 183 batting first. In response, Vipers were reduced to 109/7, but an unbroken partnership of 78 between Emily Windsor and Tara Norris ensured the side defended their title, winning by 3 wickets with 2 balls to spare.

The 2021 season was Sunrisers' second season, in which they competed in the 50 over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and the new Twenty20 competition, the Charlotte Edwards Cup. The side finished bottom of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy group stage, losing all seven of their matches. The side recorded their first ever win in their opening match of the Charlotte Edwards Cup, beating Western Storm, but did not win any further matches, finishing bottom of Group B.

The 2022 season was Lightning's third season, in which they competed in the 50 over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and the Twenty20 Charlotte Edwards Cup. In the Charlotte Edwards Cup, the side finished bottom of Group B, winning one of their six matches. The side finished sixth in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, winning two of their six matches.

Northern Diamonds batter Lauren Winfield-Hill was named as Player of the Year in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, and was the tournament's leading run-scorer with 470 runs at an average of 78.30.

The side won both competitions, completing the domestic double: in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, the side finished second in the group before defeating North West Thunder in the play-off and The Blaze in the final, whilst in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy the side won the initial group stage before again defeating The Blaze in the final.

In the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, the side again finished second in the group, winning nine of their fourteen matches and progressing to the knockout stages. In the semi-final, they again defeated Southern Vipers before losing to Sunrisers in the final.

The 2024 season saw The Blaze compete in the 50 over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and the Twenty20 Charlotte Edwards Cup. The season was their second since their rebrand as The Blaze, having previously been known as Lightning. In the Charlotte Edwards Cup, the side finished top of the group stage, winning nine of their ten matches, before defeating Central Sparks in the semi-finals and South East Stars in the final to win their first ever trophy. In the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, the side finished fifth in the group, winning seven of their fourteen matches.
