The 2024 Campo Grande municipal elections are scheduled to take place on the city of Campo Grande, Brazil, in 6 October 2024. Voters will elect a mayor, a vice mayor, and 29 councillors. [1] [2] If the most voted candidate on the first round doesn't achieve more than 50% of the votes, a second round will happen on 27 October 2024. The mayor's term will begin on 1 January 2025 and end on 31 December 2028. [3] The current mayor is Adriane Lopes, who took office after Marquinhos Trad resigned on 2 April 2022. [4]

Background

Campo Grande, known for its diverse culture and significant economic role in the region, has a history of competitive elections. The municipal elections are part of a broader electoral process that occurs every four years, where voters across Brazil elect local officials in over 5,500 municipalities.[ citation needed ] The last mayoral election in Campo Grande, in 2020, resulted in the victory of incumbent Marquinhos Trad, from the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in the first round. Trad obtained 218,418 votes or 52,58% of the valid votes. [5]

Electoral calendar

Electoral calendar announced by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) on 3 January 2024 [6]
7 March – 5 AprilPeriod of the 'party window' for councillors. During this period, the councillors are able to move to other political parties in order to run for election while not losing their respective political terms.
6 AprilDeadline for all parties and party federations to obtain the registration of their statutes at the Superior Electoral Court and for all candidates to have their electoral domicile in the constituency in which they wish to contest the elections with the affiliation granted by the party.
15 MayStart of the preliminary fundraising campaign in the form of collective financing for potential candidates. During this period, candidates are not allowed to ask for votes and are still subjected to obey the rules regarding electoral propaganda on the Internet.
20 July – 5 AugustOn this date, party conventions begin to deliberate on coalitions and choose candidates for mayors and councillors tickets. Parties have until 15 August to register their names with the Brazilian Election Justice.
16 AugustBeginning of electoral campaigns on an equal basis, with any advertising or demonstration explicitly requesting for votes before the date being considered irregular and subject to fines.

Reinaldo Azambuja Silva is a Brazilian agriculturalist and politician, affiliated with the Brazilian Social Democracy Party, was Governor of Mato Grosso do Sul from January 1, 2015 to January 1, 2023. Azambuja replaced André Puccinelli in 2014, and was replaced by Eduardo Riedel in 2023. In elections in Mato Grosso do Sul in 2014 he ran for governor. Azambuja came in second place in the first round and won the election in the second round against the candidate Delcídio Amaral.

Gubernatorial elections were held in Brazil on 2 October 2022 as part of the nationwide general elections to elect tickets with state governors and their vice governors. A second round was held on 30 October for states where no candidate was able to secure more than half of the votes in the first round.

Prior to this, he was a city councilor for Campo Grande from 2005 to 2007 and a state deputy for Mato Grosso do Sul from 2007 to 2016, serving three consecutive terms. Born in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, to Nelson Trad and Therezinha Mandetta Trad. He is married to Tatiana Trad and has four daughters: Andressa, Aline, Mariana, and Alice. He is also the grandfather of Lara and Isabele. A lawyer by profession, he graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). His political career began when he was elected as a city councilor in 2004. He served as the Municipal Secretary of Land Affairs before being elected as a state deputy in 2006, a position he held until 2016. In 2016, he was elected Mayor of Campo Grande with 241,876 votes. As a lawyer, he was a member of the Mato Grosso do Sul section of the Brazilian Bar Association, serving as a counselor and later presiding over the Ethics and Discipline Commission. He also chaired the State Sports Justice Tribunal (TJD-MS).

The 2024 Porto Alegre mayoral election will take place in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil on 6 October 2024. Voters will elect a mayor, a vice mayor, and 36 councillors. The incumbent mayor, Sebastião Melo, a member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB), was elected in 2020 for his first term and intends to run for re-election. If the most voted candidate on the first round doesn't achieve more than 50% of the votes, a second round will happen on 27 October 2024. The mayor's term will begin on 1 January 2025 and end on 31 December 2028.
