A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Hornsby on 19 October 2024, following the resignation of Liberal Party MP Matt Kean. [2] [3] [4]
The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Liberal MP Matt Kean, who served as the state party's deputy leader and as the state's Treasurer under Premier Dominic Perrottet. He held many other ministerial roles under both Perrottet and his predecessor, Gladys Berejiklian. Kean is a member of the party's Moderate faction, and during Perrottet's tenure as Premier was regarded as the faction's de facto leader in New South Wales. [5]
Hornsby is a blue-ribbon seat in northern Sydney, and is one of two of the original post-1927 electoral districts to have only ever been held by the Liberal Party, its predecessors or an independent, the other being Vaucluse.

On 3 August 2024, the Liberal Party preselected James Wallace. Wallace's preselection was unsuccessfully contested by former Deputy Mayor of Hornsby Michael Hutchence and barrister Ishita Sethi. [13] [14]

The governing Labor Party has stated they will not contest this by-election with Premier Chris Minns stating "a swing against us would be a massive distraction". [15]
On 16 August 2024, One Nation announced their candidate as Steve Busch, who previously stood at the 2023 state election. [16]
The Libertarian Party announced Marc Hendrickx as their candidate on 19 September 2024. [17] The Sustainable Australia Party has preselected Justin Thomas. [18]

The New South Wales Liberal Party, officially called The Liberal Party of Australia, New South Wales Division, and colloquially known as the NSW Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. The party is currently in Opposition in New South Wales in a coalition with the National Party. The party is part of the federal Liberal Party.

Dominic Francis Perrottet is an Australian politician who served as the 46th premier of New South Wales from 2021 to 2023. He held office as leader of the New South Wales division of the Liberal Party of Australia, and assumed the position following the resignation of Gladys Berejiklian.

Damien Francis Tudehope is an Australian politician. Tudehope served as the New South Wales Minister for Finance in the second Berejiklian and Perrottet ministries from April 2019 to March 2023. He was also the Minister for Employee Relations, the Vice-President of the Executive Council, and the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council in the Perrottet ministry since December 2021. Tudehope has been a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council since the 2019 state election, representing the Liberal Party.

The 2023 Liberal Party of Australia leadership election is a leadership election that was held on 21 April 2023 following the party's defeat by the Labor Party at the 2023 election and the resignation of leader and former Premier Dominic Perrottet. Mark Speakman and Anthony Roberts were the two declared candidates. Speakman defeated Roberts by 22 votes (62.86%) to 13 (37.14%). For the deputy leadership, Natalie Ward defeated Wendy Tuckerman by 27 votes (77.14%) to eight (22.86%) after the party overwhelmingly voted to allow members of both houses to run for the deputy leadership.

One Nation have chosen former Qantas pilot Steve Busch as their candidate to succeed retiring Liberal Matt Kean at October's by-election. Busch also ran in Hornsby at last year's state election, coming in fourth with 7.9% of the vote.

So far just one other candidate has put their hand up for the by-election, Sustainable Australia's Justin Thomas.
