Background

In the 2020 Puerto Rico Democratic primary, Joe Biden won 56% of the vote against former candidates Bernie Sanders and Michael Bloomberg, who had each withdrawn from the race at the time of voting. [2]

Candidates

Incumbent President Joe Biden announced his bid for a second term on April 25, 2023. [3] He faces a primary challenge from author, progressive activist, and 2020 presidential candidate Marianne Williamson, [4] and Representative Dean Phillips. [5] All three candidates will appear on the ballot. [6]

Williamson was the first major Democratic candidate to officially announce their candidacy, as President Joe Biden did not announce his re-election bid until April 2023. Williamson suspended her campaign on February 7, 2024, as a result of her losses in the New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada Democratic primaries. She later retracted her campaign suspension and officially rejoined the race on February 28, 2024, following her third place finish in the Michigan Democratic primary ahead of Dean Phillips, whose campaign was still active at the time. He was one of four major candidates who have mounted primary challenges to incumbent President Joe Biden; environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. withdrew in October 2023 to run as an independent, while author Marianne Williamson suspended her campaign in February 2024 before unsuspending again later that month. The campaign was considered to be a "long-shot" run by Roll Call and NBC News. On March 6, 2024, Phillips suspended his campaign following Super Tuesday.

Several debates and forums have taken place among candidates in the campaign for the Democratic Party's nomination for president in the 2024 United States presidential election. The Democratic National Committee has expressed full support for incumbent president Joe Biden and has no plans to host any official primary debates. As such, the debates held are instead sponsored by private organizations, and are only being held among Biden's primary challengers.

Voting took place almost entirely by mail, with some in-person voting on reservations, and in Fargo, Bismarck, and Grand Forks. Mailed-in ballots must have been received by noon on March 30.
