Incumbent President Joe Biden announced on April 25, 2023, his bid for a second term. He faced a primary challenge from author and 2020 presidential candidate Marianne Williamson. An protest movement was also endorsed by multiple organizations protesting the Israel–Hamas war, which encouraged voters to submit blank ballots, which are counted in the state. [2]
President Biden won the primary in a landslide.
On February 4, 2023, the Democratic National Committee approved a new 2024 primary calendar, moving Georgia's primary ahead to February 13 on the fourth primary date sanctioned by the DNC. This vote was preceded by a December 2022 vote of the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee, held after a letter from President Biden requesting the change was released. [3] DNC members who supported this new plan say this will give a better representation of Democratic voters' preference during the early months of the campaign. Members of the Georgia Democratic Party noted that moving their primaries to comply with the new calendar would require changing Georgia state law that mandates the state to hold both the Democratic and Republican primaries on the same day. This is unlikely to happen since the state's legislature is controlled by Republicans. [4] [5] In May 2023, Georgia Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger denied the DNC's request for a separate February date and scheduled the Georgia primaries for March 12. [6] It is unclear how the DNC will proceed, as its convention rules would penalize Georgia's number of delegates if they are unable to move the primary date to comply with the party's primary calendar. "Uncommitted" is a voting option in some United States presidential primaries. Depending on state and party thresholds, voting uncommitted may allow states to send uncommitted delegates to a party's nominating convention.
The Israel–Hamas war protest vote movements were protest vote movements targeting the 2024 United States Democratic Party presidential primaries to protest US president Joe Biden's policy towards the Israel–Hamas war. They were part of larger Israel–Hamas war protests in the United States. After a notable "uncommitted" vote in the US state of Michigan, activists sought to replicate the protest in other US states. While some activists under Abandon Biden argued against supporting Biden entirely during the 2024 general presidential election, others in uncommitted movements urged to use uncommitted votes during the presidential primary to push for pro-Palestinian action before the presidential election. Both groups overlap and supported each other's goals, to the point of being considered "twin" movements. On July 21, 2024, Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential election.
