The 2020 Puerto Rican municipal election was held on November 3, 2020, to elect the mayors of the 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico, concurrently with the election of the Governor, the Resident Commissioner, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. The winners were elected to a four-year term from January 3, 2021, to January 3, 2025.

Contents

While the Popular Democratic Party kept most of the municipalities, its majority went down from 45 to 41. A total of 26 municipalities flipped parties, including many party strongholds, like Aguadilla (32 years under PNP) and Humacao (20 years under PPD). [1]

[6] Yanitsia Irizarry Méndez became interim mayor and won the PNP primary. [7] She lost to PPD candidate Julio Roldán Concepción, ending 32 years of PNP control of the municipality. [8]

Both PPD candidate Ismael Rodríguez Ramos [55] and Write-In candidate Edgardo Cruz Vélez [56] claimed victory, with the official count stating that Cruz Vélez was the winner. [57] The case was taken to court, where it was determined that 38 votes had been duplicated, and had to be eliminated, giving Rodíguez Ramos the win. [58] After multiple court revisions, Rodíguez Ramos was declared the official winner, and ratified as mayor of Guánica. [59] [60]

Previous mayor Roberto Pagán Centeno renounced to his post on January 3, 2020, after 16 years in the job. [86] The municipal committee quickly confirmed Pagán Centeno's son, Carlos Pagán Crespo as a candidate for mayor, without waiting for the PNP directory's orders. [87] The directory's evaluating committee ultimately rejected Pagán Crespo's candidacy for endorsing independent candidate Abel Nazario Quiñones for the senate. General elections were held in Puerto Rico on November 3, 2020, to elect the officials of the Puerto Rican government who will serve from January 2021 to January 2025, most notably the position of Governor and Resident Commissioner. In addition, there was also a non-binding status referendum to ask voters if Puerto Rico should become the 51st state of the Union.

The 2020 Puerto Rico Senate election was held on November 3, 2020, to elect the members of the 27th Senate of Puerto Rico, concurrently with the election of the Governor, the Resident Commissioner, the House of Representatives, and the mayors of the 78 municipalities. The winners will be elected to a four-year term from January 2, 2021, to January 2, 2025.

The 2024 Puerto Rico gubernatorial election will be held on November 5, 2024, to elect the governor of Puerto Rico, concurrently with the election of the Resident Commissioner, the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the mayors of the 78 municipalities. Incumbent New Progressive Party Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia is running for re-election to a second term in office, and resident commissioner Jennifer González Colón is challenging him in the primary. The Popular Democratic Party is expected to have a primary, as several potential candidates have voiced interest in the position. A similar situation could take place in Project Dignity, with at least two candidates expressing interest in the position. Meanwhile, the Puerto Rican Independence Party and Citizens' Victory Movement have engaged in talks about an electoral alliance, which could affect how they nominate candidates for several positions, including the governorship. As of 2023, no governor has won re-election since Pedro Rosselló in 1996.

The 2016 Puerto Rican municipal election was held on November 8, 2016, to elect the mayors of the 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico, concurrently with the election of the Governor, the Resident Commissioner, the Senate, and the House of Representatives.
