The 60th Chicago International Film Festival took place from October 16 to 27, 2024, in Chicago, United States. Malcolm Washington's directorial debut The Piano Lesson , adapted from August Wilson's 1987 play, will serve as the "Opening Night Film", while Robert Zemeckis' drama film Here , an adaptation of the graphic novel by Richard McGuire, was selected as the "Closing Night Film". [1]

Contents

Festival events will take place mainly around AMC NEWCITY 14, though other eent venues throughout the city include the Music Box Theatre, the Gene Siskel Film Center, the Chicago History Museum, and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago. [2]

Background

American director Malcolm Washington will received the Breakthrough Award for his debut The Piano Lesson . Additionally, actor John David Washington, who stars in the film will received the Spotlight Award. Robert Zemeckis will receive the Founder's Legacy Award, which will be presented during the Closing Night celebration. American director Marielle Heller will receive the Visionary Award for her comedy horror film Nightbitch , which was selected as the "Centerpiece Film". [3]

Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda will receive the Career Achievement Award, with a retrospective programme presented on October 18, dedicated to honour his filmography. [4] American actor Mike Myers will also receive the Career Achievement Award, presented on October 19 during a special event titled "An Evening with Mike Myers" hosted by Dave Foley. [5]

Shaji Neelakantan Karunakaran, better known as Shaji N. Karun, is an Indian film director and cinematographer. His debut film Piravi (1988) won the Caméra d'Or – Mention d'honneur at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. He was the premiere chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, the first academy for film and TV in India and was also the executive chairman of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) from 1998 to 2001. The Silver Hugo Award for Best Actress is one of the awards presented annually by the Chicago International Film Festival to recognize an actress who has delivered an outstanding performance. It was first awarded in 1965; the award for Best Actress was given under the Golden Plaque section for a few years in the 1980s, and its winners are included in this category.

The 60th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 11 to 21 February 2010, with Werner Herzog as president of the jury. The opening film of the festival was Chinese director Wang Quan'an's romantic drama Apart Together, in competition, while the closing film is Japanese director Yoji Yamada's About Her Brother, which was screened out of competition.

Dylan Verrechia is a Barthélemois award-winning film director, auteur, screenwriter, director of photography, and producer. He grew up in Saint Barthélemy, French West Indies, bedridden with severe ankylosing spondylitis for many years. At age twelve, he was sent to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in France. He then started correspondence courses from the National Centre for Distance Education. After the national service, Verrechia studied Cinema at Paris Nanterre University taught by Jean Rouch from la Cinémathèque française. He graduated with honors in Film & TV from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and became soon after a U.S. citizen. Verrechia is a director of Mexican cinema, and his films have won awards worldwide.

The Gold Coast International Film Festival launched in 2011, on the north shore of North Hempstead, New York. The festival, now held every November, completed its 7th year in 2017. The festival is produced by the Gold Coast Arts Center, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) multi-arts center based in Great Neck, NY. Founding sponsors of the festival include the Town of North Hempstead and Douglas Elliman Real Estate. Ric Esther Bienstock is a Canadian documentary filmmaker best known for her investigative documentaries. She was born in Montreal, Quebec and studied at Vanier College and McGill University. She has produced and directed an eclectic array of films from investigative social issue documentaries like Sex Slaves, an investigation into the trafficking of women from former Soviet Bloc Countries into the global sex trade and Ebola: Inside an Outbreak which took viewers to ground zero of the Ebola outbreak in Zaire - to lighter fare such as Penn & Teller’s Magic and Mystery Tour.

The 30th Moscow International Film Festival was held from 19 to 28 June 2008. The Golden George was awarded to the Iranian film As Simple as That directed by Reza Mirkarimi.
