Alenka Gotar is a Slovene soprano singer, born in Rodica in 1977. [1] With the song "Cvet z juga" ("Flower of the South"), she represented Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Helsinki, Finland. Achieving seventh place in the semi-final, she became the first Slovene to qualify to the grand final, where she ended fifteenth with 66 points.

Biography

Alenka Gotar began her musical interest by attending a small music school where she learned piano and guitar. Afterwards, she attended music and ballet school in Ljubljana, where Markos Bajuk taught her solo singing. After graduating in 1996, she applied to study singing at the Musical Academy in Basel, Switzerland, and in 1999, she attended the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg, where she was taught by Lilijan Sukis. Alenka gained her diploma in 2000. In Salzburg, she continued studies in singing and opera with Sukis, along with perfecting her craft in Rome with Maya Sunari-Biankini, and with Marjana Lipovšek and Alfred Burgstaller. She gained her master's degree in 2006.

Alenka Gotar is a guest in the Maribor Opera and as a soloist, she sings in the state theatres in Salzburg and Ljubljana. She toured with an orchestra and chamber choir in Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Croatia, and Scandinavia. Her repertoire ranges from baroque to modern musical pieces. She also works as music teacher.

On 4 February 2007, Alenka Gotar won EMA 2007, the Slovenian national selection for Eurovision 2007. In Helsinki, during the semi-final on 10 May 2007, Alenka sang "Cvet z juga" and progressed to the finals, where she placed 15th with the same song. The song, described as a fast rhythmic ballad combined with operatic vocals, was written and composed by Andrej Babić and arranged by Aleksandra Valenčić. EMA 2007 was the edition of the competition to decide the winner completely by televoting. After two semi-finals and a final, the Slovenian public had a choice between Alenka and Eva Černe. With 44,636 votes, Alenka was crowned the winner and given the right to represent Slovenia at Eurovision.

During the 2018 Slovenian parliamentary election, Alenka Gotar stood as a parliamentary candidate for the Slovenian Democratic Party but, ultimately, did not gain a seat in the Slovenian National Assembly despite her party's victory in the election. [2]

Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest

Slovenia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest twenty-six times since its debut in 1993, having hosted a qualification round in Ljubljana for seven countries due to the influx of new nations wishing to join the Eurovision Song Contest. Having only missed the event twice in 1994 and 2000 due to the relegation rule after a poor average score in the 1990s, Slovenia's best result is seventh position achieved on two occasions; in 1995 with "Prisluhni mi" performed by Darja Švajger and in 2001 with Nuša Derenda and "Energy". Since the introduction of the semi-finals in 2004, Slovenia has qualified for the final on six occasions. As of 2021, Slovenia has not made it to the top ten since their seventh place finish in 2001, only making it to the thirteenth position in 2002 and 2011.

Mojot svet

"Mojot svet" was the Macedonian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, performed in Macedonian and English by Karolina Gočeva. The song was composed by Grigor Koprov and written by Ognen Nedelkovski, both of whom had previous contest experience. Gočeva, too, had already performed "Od Nas Zavisi" for her country at the 2002 contest. Her appearance marked the first time that the same performer represented Macedonia twice.

Peter Poles

Peter Poles is a Slovenian television personality, responsible for presenting the Slovenian televote results in various editions of Eurovision Song Contest. Poles first filled this role in 2003, returning in all years until 2009. In 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015 he was one of two hosts in Slovenian version of show Got talent the show was broadcast by Slovenian commercial television channel POP TV. In 2015 he got his own TV show similar to once popular German Rudi Carrel Show - Dan najlepših sanj.

"Senhora do mar " is a song recorded by Portuguese singer Vânia Fernandes, written by Andrej Babić and Carlos Coelho. It is best known as the Portuguese entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, held in Belgrade, Serbia. It was the winner of the 2008 edition of Festival da Canção, the national selection final, after receiving a total of 17,650 votes (35%), more than the double of votes received by the runner-up.

Andrej Babić is a Croatian songwriter who has written many Eurovision songs since 2003. He has written songs for four countries: Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and Portugal.

Slovenia entered the Eurovision Song Contest 2003, represented by Karmen Stavec with the song "Nanana". The song, performed in Slovene as "Lep poletni dan", was the winner of the Slovene national final, EMA 2003.

Slovenia competed in the Eurovision Song Contest 1997, represented by Tanja Ribič and the song "Zbudi se". Ribič was the winner of the 1997 EMA contest, organised by Slovene broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTVSLO).

Martina Majerle is a Croatian singer of mixed Croatian and Slovenian descent. Majerle represented Slovenia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow, Russia with the string quartet Quartissimo with the song "Love Symphony". It competed in the second semi-final but failed to reach the final. Martina has also been a backing vocalist for several countries in various editions of the contest.

Tinkara Kovač is a Slovenian singer and musician. She represented her country in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, finishing in 25th place.

Slovenia selected their Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2015 entry through Mini EMA 2015. The competing songs were broken down into two semi-finals taking place on 20 September and 27 September 2015 and the final on 4 October 2015. Lina Kuduzović was declared the winner and she represented Slovenia with her song "Prva ljubezen". She ended 3rd with 112 points, marking Slovenia's best result in both the Junior and Adult Eurovision Song Contests.

Slovenia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "On My Way" written by Omar Naber. The song was performed by Omar Naber, who had previously represented Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 where he failed to qualify to the final with the song "Stop". Slovenian broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija organised the national selection EMA 2017 in order to select the Slovenian entry for the 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. After a two-week-long competition consisting of two semi-finals, and a final, "On My Way" performed by Omar Naber emerged as the winner after achieving the highest score following the combination of votes from a regional jury vote from six regions in Slovenia and a public vote.

Slovenia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. Slovenian broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija organized the national selection EMA 2018 in order to select the Slovenian entry for the 2018 contest in Lisbon, Portugal. It qualified for the grand final and placed 22nd with 64 points.
