France was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "L'amour à la française", written by Ivan Callot, Paul Léger, and Laurent Honel, and performed by the band Les Fatals Picards. The French participating broadcaster, France Télévisions , organised the national final Eurovision 2007 : et si on gagnait ? in order to select its entry for the contest. Ten songs competed in the national final on 6 March 2007 where the winner was selected over two rounds of voting. In the first round, two entries were selected to advance to the second round following the combination of votes from a jury panel and a public vote. In the second round, "L'amour à la française" performed by les Fatals Picards was selected as the winner following the combination of votes from the jury and public vote.

As a member of the "Big Four", France automatically qualified to compete in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest. Performing in position 13, France placed twenty-second out of the 24 participating countries with 19 points.

Background

Prior to the 2007 contest, France Télévisions and its predecessor national broadcasters, have participated in the Eurovision Song Contest representing France forty-nine times since RTF's debut in 1956. [1] They first won the contest in 1958 with " Dors, mon amour " performed by André Claveau. In the 1960s, they won three times, with "Tom Pillibi" performed by Jacqueline Boyer in 1960, " Un premier amour " performed by Isabelle Aubret in 1962, and " Un jour, un enfant " performed by Frida Boccara, who won in 1969 in a four-way tie with the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Their fifth – and so far latest – victory came in 1977 with " L'oiseau et l'enfant " performed by Marie Myriam. They has also finished second four times, with Paule Desjardins in 1957, Catherine Ferry in 1976, Joëlle Ursull in 1990, and Amina in 1991 (who lost out to Sweden's Carola in a tie-break). In the 21st century, France has had less success, only making the top ten two times, with " Je n'ai que mon âme " performed by Natasha St-Pier finishing fourth in 2001 and " Il faut du temps " by Sandrine François finishing fifth in 2002. In 2006, "Il était temps" performed by Virginie Pouchain finished in twenty-second place.

As part of its duties as participating broadcaster, France Télévisions organises the selection of its entry in the Eurovision Song Contest and broadcasts the event in the country through France 3 . The broadcaster confirmed that it would participate in the 2007 contest on 16 May 2006. [2] The French broadcasters had used both national finals and internal selection to choose their entries in the past. From 2001 to 2004, France Télévisions opted to internally select its entries. The broadcaster selected its 2005 and 2006 entries via a national final, a procedure that it continued in order to select the 2007 entry.

Before Eurovision

Eurovision 2007 : et si on gagnait ?

Eurovision 2007 : et si on gagnait ? was the national final organised by France Télévisions through its channels: France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5, and overseas territories broadcaster RFO, to select their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2007. The competition took place on 6 March 2007 at the La Plaine St-Denis studios in Paris, hosted by Julien Lepers and Tex. The show was broadcast on France 3 as well as online via the broadcaster channel's official website france3.fr. [3] The national final was watched by 2.02 million viewers in France with a market share of 8.7%. [4]

Competing entries

France Télévisions received 1,500 submissions after the broadcaster requested proposals from successful French acts over the last five years. [5] The television channels of the French broadcaster France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5, and RFO reviewed the received submissions and each selected two entries to compete in the national final based on individual criteria: variety for France 2, newcomers for France 3, rap and rock music for France 4, pop music for France 5 and world music for RFO. One of the competing artists from the RFO selection, Valérie Louri, was selected via the musical programme 9 Semaines et 1 Jour. [6] The competing artists and songs were announced on 2 February 2007. [7] On 7 February 2007, the artists presented their entries to the public during an introductory event held at the Le Réservoir in Paris. [8]

Final

The final took place on 6 March 2007. Ten entries competed and the winner was selected over two rounds of voting. In the first round, the top two entries as determined by the combination of public televoting (50%) and a jury panel headed by songwriter Jean-Paul Cara (50%) advanced to the second round, the superfinal. In the superfinal, the winner, "L'amour à la française" performed by les Fatals Picards, was determined by the public and jury vote. [9] [10] The winning song was performed using Franglais, a mixture of French and English, and according to the songwriters meant to combine French romance and punk for beginners. [11]

In addition to the performances of the competing entries, Marie Myriam (who won Eurovision for France in 1977) performed her winning song " L'oiseau et l'enfant " as the interval act of the show. [12]

At Eurovision

According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country, the "Big Four" (France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom) and the ten highest placed finishers in the 2006 contest are required to qualify from the semi-final in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from the semi-final progress to the final. As a member of the "Big 4", France automatically qualified to compete in the final on 12 May 2007. In addition to their participation in the final, France is also required to broadcast and vote in the semi-final on 10 May 2007.

In France, the semi-final was broadcast on France 4 with commentary by Peggy Olmi and Yann Renoard, while the final was broadcast on France 3 with commentary by Julien Lepers and Tex, as well as via radio on France Bleu with commentary by Yves Derisbourg. [13] France Télévisions appointed Vanessa Dolmen as its spokesperson to announce the French votes during the final.

Les Fatals Picards took part in technical rehearsals on 7 and 8 May, followed by dress rehearsals on 11 and 12 May. During the running order draw for the semi-final and final on 12 March 2007, France was placed to perform in position 13 in the final, following the entry from Sweden and before the entry from Latvia.

The French performance featured the members of les Fatals Picards on stage in a band set-up dressed in retro black and pink outfits, including the addition of the white wings of Cupid on the band drummer Jean-Marc Sauvagnargues's back and a faux object on the shoulder of lead singer Ivan Callot. During the performance, the members of les Fatals Picards performed frantic actions, including running about the stage. The stage colours were predominately pink and the LED screens displayed a collage of candy pink and white roses with graphics of the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame fading in and out over the roses. [14] [15] France placed twenty-second in the final, scoring 19 points. [16]

Armenia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Anytime You Need" written by Hayko and Karen Kavaleryan. The song was performed by Hayko. The Armenian entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland was selected through the national final Evrotesil 2007, organised by the Armenian broadcaster Public Television of Armenia (AMPTV). The national final and consisted of three shows: two semi-finals and a final. Ten entries competed in each semi-final with three from each semi-final alongside a wildcard qualifying to compete in the final on 25 February 2007. Belgium participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Love Power" written by Paul Curtiz and Wakas Ashiq. The song was performed by the band The KMG's, which was internally selected by the Walloon broadcaster Radio Télévision Belge de la Communauté Française (RTBF) in February 2007 to represent the nation at the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. The song, "Love Power", was released on 23 February 2007 and officially presented to the public on 26 February 2007. This was the first time that a Walloon entry was performed in English at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Bosnia and Herzegovina participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Rijeka bez imena" written by Aleksandra Milutinović and Goran Kovačić. The song was performed by Marija Šestić. On 16 January 2007, the Bosnian broadcaster Radio and Television of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BHRT) revealed that they had internally selected Marija Šestić to compete at the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. Her song, "Rijeka bez imena", was presented to the public during a show entitled BH Eurosong 2007 on 4 March 2007.

Bulgaria was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Water", written and performed by Elitsa Todorova and Stoyan Yankoulov. The Bulgarian participating broadcaster, Bulgarian National Television (BNT), organised the national final Bŭlgarskata pesen v „Evroviziya 2007” in order to select its entry for the contest. This was the first-ever entry performed in Bulgarian in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Croatia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Vjerujem u ljubav" written by Dado Topić. The song was performed by the band Dragonfly featuring Dado Topić. The Croatian broadcaster Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT) organised the national final Dora 2007 to select the Croatian entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. Thirty-two entries competed in the national final which consisted of three shows: two semi-finals and a final. Eight entries qualified from each semi-final on 1 and 2 March 2007 to compete in the final on 3 March 2007. In the final, "Vjerujem u ljubav" performed by Dragonfly featuring Dado Topić was selected as the winner following the combination of votes from a five-member jury panel and a public televote.

Ukraine participated in Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Dancing Lasha Tumbai" written by Andriy Danylko. The song was performed by Verka Serduchka, which is the drag stage persona of Andriy Danylko. The Ukrainian broadcaster National Television Company of Ukraine (NTU) organised a national final in order to select the Ukrainian entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. Seven entries competed in the national selection held on 9 March 2007 and "Danzing" performed by Verka Serduchka was selected as the winner following the combination of votes from a five-member jury panel and a public televote. The song was later retitled as "Dancing Lasha Tumbai". The Ukrainian entry caused controversy due to Serduchka being a drag performer as well as alleged political references in the song.

Iceland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Valentine Lost" written by Sveinn Rúnar Sigurðsson and Peter Fenner. The song was performed by Eiríkur Hauksson. Eiríkur Hauksson previously represented Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 1986 as part of the group ICY and Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest 1991 as part of the group Just 4 Fun, placing sixteenth and seventeenth with the songs "Gleðibankinn" and "Mrs. Thompson", respectively. The Icelandic entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland was selected through the national final Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2007, organised by the Icelandic broadcaster Ríkisútvarpið (RÚV). The selection consisted of three semi-finals and a final, held on 20 January, 27 January, 3 February and 17 February 2007, respectively. Eight songs competed in each semi-final with the top three as selected by a public televote advancing to the final. In the final, "Ég les í lófa þínum" performed by Eiríkur Hauksson emerged as the winner exclusively through public televoting. The Moldovan broadcaster TeleRadio-Moldova (TRM) internally selected the Moldovan entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. 34 entries competed to represent Moldova in Helsinki though a process entitled Pentru Eurovision 2007, with three being shortlisted to participate in a live audition on 14 December 2006 where "Fight" performed by Natalia Barbu was selected by an expert jury.

Lithuania participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Love or Leave" written by Julija Ritčik. The song was performed by the band 4Fun. The Lithuanian broadcaster Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) organised the national final "Eurovizijos" dainų konkurso nacionalinė atranka in order to select the Lithuanian entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. The national final took place over six weeks and involved three different competitive streams: entries performed by newcomers, semi-established artists and established artists. In the final, eleven artists and songs remained and the winner was selected over two rounds of public voting. In the first round, the top three were selected to qualify to the superfinal. In the superfinal, "Love or Leave" performed by 4Fun was selected as the winner with 23,888 votes.

Latvia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Questa notte" written by Kjell Jennstig, Torbjörn Wassenius and Francesca Russo. The Latvian broadcaster Latvijas Televīzija (LTV) organised the national final Eirodziesma 2007 in order to select the Latvian entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. Macedonia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Mojot svet" written by Grigor Koprov and Ognen Nedelkovski. The song was performed by Karolina who previously represented Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 with the song "Od nas zavisi", placing nineteenth in the competition. The Macedonian broadcaster Macedonian Radio Television (MRT) organised the national final Pesna za Evrovizija 2007 in order to select the Macedonian entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. Fifteen entries competed in the competition on 24 February 2007 where "Mojot svet" performed by Karolina Gočeva was selected by a regional televote.

Malta participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Vertigo" written by Philip Vella and Gerard James Borg. The song was performed by Olivia Lewis. The Maltese entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland was selected through the national final Malta Song for Europe 2007, organised by the Maltese broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services (PBS). The competition consisted of two phases: Opportunity 2 and Malta Song for Europe 2007. In the final of Malta Song for Europe 2007, held on 3 February 2007, "Vertigo" performed by Olivia Lewis eventually emerged as the winning entry after gaining the most votes from a public televote with 30,977 votes.

Serbia was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Molitva", composed by Vladimir Graić, with lyrics by Saša Milošević Mare, and performed by Marija Šerifović. The Serbian participating broadcaster, Radio-televizija Srbije (RTS), organised the national final Beovizija 2007 in order to select its entry for the contest. This was the first-ever entry from independent Serbia in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Switzerland participated at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Vampires Are Alive" written by René Baumann and Axel Breitung. The song was performed by DJ BoBo, which is the artistic name of singer René Baumann who was internally selected by the Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR idée suisse in December 2006 to represent the nation at the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. "Vampires Are Alive" was presented to the public as the Swiss song on 21 February 2007.

France participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Divine" written by Sébastien Tellier and Amandine de la Richardière. The song was performed by Sébastien Tellier. The French broadcaster France Télévisions in collaboration with the television channel France 3 internally selected the French contest entry for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia. Three songs competed in the national final which took place during the France 3 programme Les chansons d'abord. On 2 March 2014, "Moustache" performed by Twin Twin was officially announced by France 3 as the winner following the combination of votes from a jury panel and a public vote.
