Plot

Synthetic android Hope has been left drifting alone for more than a year aboard the Otranto after she crew abandoned ship, passing the time making repairs, drawing, reading, and counting rivets to distract from her loneliness, hoping as her captain promised that on day someone will return to rescue her. Frustrated with how the A.I. running the ship, MU / TH / UR, won't give her access to Laboratory B-11a, the one part of the ship she hasn't been to, after an electrical fire damage's the A.I.'s ability to communicate with Hope, the android cuts her way inside the lab and discovered several alien specimens stored within, all but one of which, a facehugger, having perished. Unable to impregnate Hope, the facehugger flees into the rest of the ship. Over the following days and weeks, Hope begins to study the facehugger, while emotionally bonding with it, as both android and alien begin to deteriorate over time.

Saddened by her companion's impending death, Hope conducts hasty, improvised repairs to the ship to move it towards populated space, hoping this will increase their chances of rescue before both die. Hope's gambit pays off, and the ship is found by a human, Macwhirr, who docks with it and comes aboard, with Hope immediately helping the facehugger subdue and impregnate him. Macwhirr awakes with no memory of Hope attacking him, finding himself locked in the Otranto, before Hope appears outside the door and asks that he accept his impending death as she has, before a chestburster emerges' from Macwhirr's chest. Sometime later, as Hope mourns the facehugger, she is approached by the now fully-grown xenomorph grown of Macwhirr via the facehugger, gazing up at it as it looms over her. [5] [6]
