Alley Grove is an unincorporated community in Marshall County, West Virginia, United States.
Pendleton County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,695, making it the fifth-least populous county in West Virginia. Its county seat is Franklin. The county was created by the Virginia General Assembly in 1788 from parts of Augusta, Hardy, and Rockingham Counties and was named for Edmund Pendleton (1721–1803), a distinguished Virginia statesman and jurist. Pendleton County was strongly pro-Confederate during the American Civil War; however, there were pockets of Unionists who supported the state government in Wheeling.

"Engine One-Forty-Three" is a ballad in the tradition of early American train wreck songs, based on the true story of the wreck of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway's Fast Flying Virginian (FFV) near Hinton, West Virginia on 23 October 1890. The train was on its way to Clifton Forge, Virginia, when it hit a rock slide. Early accounts record that the engineer, George Alley, remained on the train to try to slow it and save the lives of its passengers. Alley died at the scene, his fireman, Lewis Withrow, was badly burned. Robert Foster, a fireman who had been substituting for Withrow and was deadheading home jumped to safety. The ballad elaborates the story, including a mother, excessive speed, and a motive.

Burches Run Wildlife Management Area, formerly Burches Run Lake WMA, is located on 55 acres (22 ha) near Wheeling in Marshall County, West Virginia. Until 2005 the wildlife management area contained a lake impounded by a dam at risk of failure. The name change occurred after the dam was removed. The terrain climbs gently above Burches Run and is covered by a mature oak-hickory second-growth forest.

Thomas Walter Alley was an American football player and coach. Alley was an All-Southern Conference tackle and 1964 graduate of The College of William and Mary. He held an M.Ed from William and Mary, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Boston Patriots, and played for two years with the Richmond Rebels of the Atlantic Coast Football League and Continental Football League before joining the coaching staff at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
