IUCN Red List Inventory of the global conservation status of biological species

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, founded in 1964, is the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of biological species. It uses a set of criteria to evaluate the extinction risk of thousands of species and subspecies. These criteria are relevant to all species and all regions of the world. With its strong scientific base, the IUCN Red List is recognized as the most authoritative guide to the status of biological diversity. A series of Regional Red Lists are produced by countries or organizations, which assess the risk of extinction to species within a political management unit.

Sardine Common names used to refer to various small, oily forage fish within the herring family of Clupeidae

"Sardine" and "pilchard" are common names for various small, oily forage fish in the herring family Clupeidae. The term "sardine" was first used in English during the early 15th century and may come from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, around which sardines were once abundant.

Lepidiolamprologus is a small genus of cichlids endemic to Lake Tanganyika in eastern Africa. It is closely related to Altolamprologus. and there is the possibility that a revision of the genus could see more species added.

A species that is extinct in the wild (EW) is one that has been categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as known only by living members kept in captivity or as a naturalized population outside its historic range due to massive habitat loss.

Alticorpus macrocleithrum is a species of fish in the family Cichlidae. It is endemic to Lake Malawi, where it can be found at depths between 30 and 150 metres. This species differs from all other species of Alticorpus by the presence of a prominent ventral protuberance of the cleithrum on the chest, hence the name macrocleithrum.

Alticorpus mentale is a species of haplochromine cichlid in the family Cichlidae. It is endemic to Lake Malawi, occurring in the southern part of the lake within Malawi. Its natural habitat is freshwater lakes.

Alticorpus peterdaviesi is a species of fish in the family Cichlidae. It is endemic to Lake Malawi. It is found in the southern part of the lake, in areas where the substrate consists of "diatom ooze" and diatoms probably form the major part of its diet. The specific name honours Peter Davies, an exporter of live fish from Lake Malawi who provided great assistance to the authors.

Lepidiolamprologus profundicola is a species of carnivorous, fish-eating cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika where it is found in rocky areas, avoiding areas with a sandy substrate, at relatively deeper depths than its congeners. This species can reach a length of 30.5 centimetres (12.0 in) TL. It can also be found in the aquarium trade.

Nautilia profundicola is a Gram-negative chemolithoautotrophic epsilonproteobacterium found around hydrothermal vents in the deep ocean. It was first discovered in 1999 on the East Pacific Rise at depth of 2,500 metres (8,200 ft), on the surface of the polychaete worm Alvinella pompejana. Nautilia profundicola lives symbiotically on the dorsal hairs of A. pompejana but they may also form biofilms and live independently on the walls of hydrothermal vents. The ability of N. profundicola to survive in an anaerobic environment rich in sulfur, H2 and CO2 of varying temperature makes it a useful organism to study, as these are the conditions that are theorized to have prevailed around the time of the earliest life on earth.

Alticorpus geoffreyi is a species of haplochromine cichlid which is endemic to Lake Malawi, where it is widely distributed and can be found at depths of 18–150 metres (59–492 ft), although it is most common below 60 metres (200 ft). The specific name honours the British carcinologist, ecologist and ichthyologist Geoffrey Fryer, who studied the fishes of Lake Malawi, especially the cichlids which occur in the rocky areas of the lake.
