The Amazon (Japanese: アマゾン) is a character introduced in the 2013 side-scrolling beat 'em up roleplaying game Dragon's Crown , developed by Vanillaware. A tall blonde muscular woman specializing in melee attacks, she is intended to have low defense, but able to deal large amounts of damage. Created by George Kamitani, her animations for the game were done by illustrator Shigatake. She additionally appears in a manga novelization of the game, and in a comic series published in Famitsu . In Japanese the character is voiced by Atsuko Tanaka, while her English voice actress is uncredited.
Since her debut she has received mixed reception. Some felt her design was unnecessarily sexualized, and moreso that it hurt the game's presentation and felt at odds with attempts to address gender issues in the gaming industry. Others however praised her appearance, describing her as one of the most striking characters visually in the title and feeling that a depiction of a physically strong woman was a breath of fresh air. She has also been cited as an example of media attempts at creating an "Alpha Female" counterpart to the Alpha Male archetype, and the shortcomings in such a portrayal.
Created by George Kamitani for the beat 'em up Dragon's Crown , influences for the Amazon and other characters came from basic design motifs of fantasy literature and gaming, such as his past work on Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom , other games such as Sega's Golden Axe , [4] and the literary works of J. R. R. Tolkien. [5] He started with orthodox designs, feeling they were popular with Japanese audiences. [6] However, in order to stand out amongst other fantasy media in the market at the time he exaggerated the designs, to this end focusing on masculine or feminine traits to emphasize amongst the cast. [5] Part of his aim was to "cartoonify" the character silhouettes, while also keeping them neutral enough for a Japanese market. [4] While the game went through multiple iterations through its long development, the Amazon was included in the 2008 proposal document for developing the game on the Nintendo Wii. [7] [6]
The Amazon is a tall, muscular woman with long blonde hair. While in early concept art the character is shown to be in full armor with the exception of a thong covering her buttocks and exposed thighs, [6] in the final it was simplified to black boots, black gloves, and a chainmail bikini. [1] Her headdress was similarly changed from a feather arrangement on each side of her head to a just a pair of feathers sticking out of the right side of her hair. [6] In addition, she has a bracelet on each bicep and a circlet across her brow, while her thighs are covered in a tattoo pattern. When designing the characters, Kamitani based the art style off of Western paintings, however this caused some complications when it came time to apply color palettes as the sprites were not designed for such. [1] As a result, only the color of her hair and feathers change noticeably in game depending on selected palette. [8]
While Kamitani designed the character's poses, she was animated by illustrator Shigatake. When developing them Shigatake wanted to emphasize her buttocks, particularly in her standing animation. [2] When he wanted to add jiggle to her rear in instances such as her running animation however, the development team said no, feeling that it would be barely noticeable. [9]
As introduced in Vanillaware's 2013 video game Dragon's Crown, the Amazon is a playable character that acts as one of the game's character classes, allowing players to customize their name and choose one of several color palettes at the start of the game. [8] An orphan adopted by a tribe of Amazons, she is one of several warriors attempting to save the country of Hydeland, and at the game's conclusion a noble family recognize her as their long-lost granddaughter. [10] Additional downloadable content for the game added an option to change the game's narrator to one of the playable characters', including the Amazon's. [11] In Japanese the character is voiced by Atsuko Tanaka, while her English voice actress is uncredited. [3]
In terms of gameplay, the developers wanted her to be a low defense character that rewarded players for not getting hit, inspired by Muhammad Ali's "fight like a butterfly, sting like a bee" catchphrase. [12] Focused on melee attacks and high movement speed, the character fights using either punches and kicks or two-handed weapons such as polearms. In addition the character can parry some melee attacks, giving them temporary invincibility, while if they hit enough enemies in succession without being struck they will enter a "Berserk" state. While Berserk, movement speed and attack speed will be increased as long as the player continuously attacks. Several individual abilities can also be activated separately, such as "Stun Wave", which is an area of effect attack that can hit multiple enemies, and "Lunatic", which allows her to instantly enter the Berserk state at the cost of some health. In print media, the character is featured in a manga novelization of the game, written by Hironori Kato and overseen by Vanillaware's staff. In it, an Amazon named Sara partners with a wizard, Kreutz, and the events of the novel are intended as a side story to the game's narrative. [13] The magazine Famitsu meanwhile featured her in a gag comic series to promote the game titled Dragon's Crown Play Comic: Deplorable! Amazon-chan. Written by Kohaku Sumeragi, it was originally showcased in issues of Weekly Famitsu , and later compiled into a book published by Kadokawa Corporation and Enterbrain. [14]
Several bits of merchandise featuring the Amazon have been released, including tapestries, cleaning cloths, card sleeves, and t-shirts. [15] [16] The character was also used to represent Dragon's Crown in promotional media for Vanillaware's celebration of their 20th anniversary, as well as a promotion between game publisher Atlus and cafe Rabbit Kitchen. [17] [18] Several figures of the Amazon have also been released, such as a 1/7th scale figure by Excellent Model, [19] another figure by XPLUS, [20] and another by Goodsmile as part of their Parfom line. [21]
One figure in particular drew notable criticism, a 1/6th scale figure produced by model maker Beat. Featuring emphasized muscles and sharp angles, Jordan Devore stated that while it was over the top in a similar manner to the game, her in-game appearance "now looks respectable compared to what’s happening here", and Steven Hansen of the same publication adding that he felt even later more "fanservice-y models" were better by comparison. [22] [23] Others such as Chris Priestman of Siliconera felt it raised questions about how well the character's design translated to a 3D portrayal, [24] a sentiment repeated by Casey Baseel of SoraNews24 who added that while she already felt the original in-game presentation was "awkward", the 3D model "hammers home how ridiculously ripped" she is. [25]
Upon her debut, the Amazon received mixed reception, with several outlets criticizing her design alongside that of the game's Sorceress character. Rus McLaughlin of VentureBeat stated that at the E3 presentation of the game, he felt their designs negatively impacted the title's appeal. Describing them as causing "great offense with their (to put it mildly) overtly sexualized designs", he further felt they represented at minimum a disconnect with attempts to address gender equality issues in the gaming industry. [26] Jeremy Parish for USgamer offered similar sentiment, stating that while the design took inspiration from characters like Marvel Comics' Red Sonja and noting she was just as strong as the male characters, the comical sexualization as well as the "over-the-top appearance and stark contrast" to the male cast led him to question why and if genre conventions justified that sort of treatment. [27] Matt Sainsbury of DigitallyDownloaded.net stated that while the game drew from fantasy tropes and made the male characters "equally problematic", he felt the genre had evolved past such and further the designs of some of the other playable characters felt like "proof within Dragon’s Crown itself that the Amazon didn’t actually need to be near-naked." [28]
Other outlets viewed the subject differently however. Kotaku 's Luke Plunkett, upon noticing the North American Dragon's Crown website censored her legs, expressed confusion, stating that she was not "particularly sexual", and added that while she had a "bit of cleavage on show [...] if her cleavage is the first thing you notice, well, you’re a perv. Because her cleavage is the smallest thing in that image." [29] Chris Moyse of Destructoid praised her as one of the most striking and unique characters in the game, describing her as having "watermelon-popping thighs" and her appearance as combining "the awe-inspiring beauty of an fantasy princess with the body of 1999 Scott Steiner". [30] Lauren Schumacher of Blast Magazine described her as a "revolutionary depiction of a physically strong female", feeling that while many depictions of strong women existed in media at the time, their strength by comparison was often portrayed as magical. Physically strong women by comparison were often depicted as "grotesque, freakish, and terrifying", and she felt a character that was strong while having "flowing hair, glowing skin, amble breasts and hips" was something that only "comes around only once in a great while, and she lingers in the public consciousness for many years afterwards." [31]
Still others provided a neutral response. Damien McFerran of Push Square stated that while Kamitani's previous games had featured over-sexualized designs, he felt the Amazon's design was a "new level of absurdity", describing her as being "blessed with trunk-like thighs and a derrière so massive it presumably requires her to book two seats instead of one whenever she takes a horse-drawn carriage ride". However, he also argued that such designs were not presented as an ideal, but the developers instead having fun in referencing previous fantasy works. [32] Jeff Grub for VentureBeat meanwhile stated that while the character was a "travesty of mashed together body parts" particularly due to her "rippling abdomen muscles and tree-trunk-sized thighs" and "forearms like Popeye", after his initial reaction subsided he found the design "refreshing and interesting" and the antithesis of how women were typically portrayed in video games. Describing her as representing a typically male warrior class as a woman, he called her "strong and capable and frightening" in a positive manner and further expressed exhilaration at something that defied his expectations in video games at the time. [33]
In broader study of character design, Luis de-Leon of Game Developer described the Amazon as a prominent example of the "Alpha Female" archetype game developers try to achieve when applying the Alpha Male archetype directly to a female character. He stated that such designs tend to focus on being "scientifically cool" and are often well received by male audiences, but felt due to being built around male emotional needs solely they were often seen poorly by female audiences for ignoring theirs. [34]
Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line, titled Dragon Warrior II when initially localized to North America, is a role-playing video game developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System as a part of the Dragon Quest series. Enix's U.S. subsidiary published the American release, Dragon Warrior II, for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. Dragon Quest II is set one hundred years after the events of the first game.
Fantasy Earth Zero was a 2006 massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed for Microsoft Windows. Originally developed by Puraguru and Multiterm under the title Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion, it was released by Square Enix as a paid product through its PlayOnline service. It relaunched under Gamepot as a free game, and was later handled by developers SoftGear and Ocean Frontier and was transferred back to Square Enix. Under the premise of a world where rival kingdoms engage in frequent conflicts, players choose an allied kingdom and fight against each other in groups of up to fifty players. The game closed down in September 2022.
Princess Crown is an action role-playing game developed and published by Atlus in collaboration with Sega that was released only in Japan. Originally released in 1997 for the Sega Saturn, it was ported to the PlayStation Portable in 2005. Using a two-dimensional side-scrolling perspective, gameplay focuses on a beat 'em up-style fighting system, incorporating role-playing elements. Set in the fantasy kingdom of Valendia, the player controls queen Gradriel De Valendia, as her wish to aid the people in person leads into a quest to prevent the resurrection of the demon lord Lalva. Additional character scenarios are unlocked by completing Gradriel's quest, with completion of all story routes leading to the true ending.
Code Age is a 2005 multimedia franchise developed and published by Square Enix. It was created by Yusuke Naora and split between three projects; the manga Code Age Archives, the mobile role-playing video game Code Age Brawls, and the PlayStation 2 action role-playing game Code Age Commanders. Code Age uses a science fiction setting on the inner surface of a hollow world similar to a Dyson sphere. The narratives revolve around an apocalyptic threat to civilization, with the protagonists gaining powers from absorbing monsters dubbed the Otellos.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is a role-playing video game co-developed by Level-5 and Square Enix for the Nintendo DS. Published by Square Enix in Japan in 2009, and by Nintendo overseas in 2010, it is the ninth mainline entry in the Dragon Quest series. The storyline follows the protagonist, a member of the angelic Celestrian race, after a disaster in their home scatters magical fruits across the mortal realm. While carrying over traditional gameplay from the rest of the series with turn-based battles, the game is the first Dragon Quest entry to feature a customizable player character, and the first to include a multiplayer mode, with the option of trading treasure maps and loaning player characters through Nintendo Wi-Fi. Online functions ended in 2014 when it ceased operations.
Square's Tom Sawyer is a role-playing video game produced by Square that was released exclusively in Japan in 1989 for the Family Computer. The game is directly based on Mark Twain's renowned 1876 novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and was developed in the role-playing video game niche that made Square famous with its acclaimed Final Fantasy series of video games.
GrimGrimoire is a 2007 real-time strategy video game developed by Vanillaware and published by Nippon Ichi Software and Koei (Europe) for the PlayStation 2. A remaster, GrimGrimoire OnceMore was released in Japan on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2022 and worldwide, along with a PlayStation 5 version, in 2023. The story follows Lillet Blan, a trainee witch who is sent into a repeating cycle of five days after her school is attacked by an evil wizard seeking the hidden Philosopher's Stone. The player commands units called familiars, each having strengths and weaknesses against the other, with the goal of either destroying the opponent's bases or surviving waves of enemies.
Odin Sphere is an action role-playing game developed by Vanillaware for the PlayStation 2. It was published by Atlus in 2007, and by Square Enix in 2008. A remake, titled Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, was released on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita in 2016: Atlus handled publishing duties in Japan and North America, while NIS America published the title in PAL territories.
Vanillaware Ltd. is a Japanese video game developer based in Osaka. An independent company, it was founded in 2002 under the name Puraguru by George Kamitani, a game developer who had previously worked at Capcom and Atlus, and directed Princess Crown (1997) for the Sega Saturn. Beginning as a small studio developing Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion for Enix, in 2004 the company moved to Osaka, Kansai, and changed its name. Kamitani wanted Vanillaware to create successor projects to Princess Crown, beginning with Odin Sphere.
Muramasa: The Demon Blade is a 2009 action role-playing game developed by Vanillaware and published for the Wii by Marvelous Entertainment (Japan), Ignition Entertainment, and Rising Star Games (Europe). An expanded PlayStation Vita version was published in 2013 by Marvelous AQL in Japan and Aksys Games in Western territories. Using a 2D side-scrolling perspective, the gameplay revolves around a beat 'em up fighting system, while incorporating role-playing elements such as leveling and questing.
Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Online, also known as Dragon Quest X Online, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. It is the tenth mainline entry in the Dragon Quest series. It was originally released for the Wii in 2012, and was later ported to the Wii U, Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and Nintendo 3DS, all of which support cross-platform play. Other than a discontinued Windows version in China, the game was not released outside of Japan. A single-player remake, titled Dragon Quest X Offline, was released in 2022 in Japan, followed by South-East Asia region on May 28, 2024 with additional South Korea, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese languages support.

Following the adventures of a mercenary group in the employ of one of three warring nations, the player engages in turn-based combat while navigating maps. The game originally featured online competitive multiplayer where chosen teams of characters fight for their nation, but this ended when servers shut down in October 2013.
Kumatanchi is a life simulation video game co-developed for the Nintendo DS by Vanillaware and doujin studio Ashinaga Oji-san. It was published on September 25, 2008, by Dimple Entertainment. The premise and gameplay revolves around the player taking care of an anthropomorphic girl based on the mascot character Habanero-tan, seeing her interactions with other anthropomorphic characters over two weeks in real-time. Due to its gameplay and subject matter, it was only released in Japan.
Theatrhythm Dragon Quest is a 2015 rhythm game developed by indieszero and published by Square Enix for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan. It was the first game of its type in the Dragon Quest series, and the third Theatrhythm game after Theatrhythm Final Fantasy and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call. While following rhythm games' formula, players hit notes on the beat of music. The title also incorporates role-playing elements, allowing players to assemble a party of four characters to engage in battles or march automatically, in synchronizing with the players' beats.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a 2019 video game developed by Vanillaware and published by Atlus. It was released for the PlayStation 4 in Japan in November 2019 and worldwide in September 2020, with a Nintendo Switch version released in April 2022. The game is divided between side-scrolling adventure segments and real-time strategy (RTS) battles, and follows thirteen high-school students in a fictionalized 1980s Japan who are dragged into a futuristic war between mechas and hostile Kaiju in a nonlinear narrative.

Unicorn Overlord is a 2024 tactical role-playing game developed by Vanillaware and published by Atlus in Japan, and Sega worldwide, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Set on the continent of Fevrith as it is consumed by war, the story follows exiled prince Alain as he gathers allies to liberate the nations of Fevrith from the Zenoiran Empire. Gameplay follows Alain and his army units fighting in large-scale battles, with field movement and battles taking place in real-time.
Sword of the Vagrant is a hack and slash side-scrolling role-playing video game. It was developed by Beijing-based studio O.T.K Games and published by SakuraGame and Rainy Frog LLC. The game was released on June 9, 2017, for Windows, and was later released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on December 1, 2022. The game follows a female sellsword named Vivian who travels to the island of Mythrilla in search of her missing father. There, she is cursed and forced to serve an evil witch. The game is notable for its heavy graphical inspiration from Vanillaware titles such as Muramasa and Dragon's Crown. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its graphics, but called its gameplay simplistic, albeit worth the low price of the PC version.
Yoyo is a character in the 1996 video game Bahamut Lagoon. She was designed by Motomu Toriyama, and can be named along with the protagonist, Byuu. The game follows her story as the princess of the land of Kahna, particularly managing her kingdom, dealing with the opposing Granbelow Empire, and her romance with the empire's General Palpaleos. Her romance was a contentious thing for some players of the game, who were upset that she fell for the general instead of Byuu, partly due to some of these players naming her after a girl they liked. This led to her being labelled by these players as one of "Square's Three Big Bad Women", which writer Kurt Kalata speculated was because the people upset were in school at the time.
