Anacodon is a genus of arctocyonid from the Eocene of North America. It is known from the type species, A. ursidens, a second species, A. cultridens, and a possible third, A. nexus. Initially believed to be a relative of Phenacodon , it was subsequently found to be an arctocyonid, possibly related to Claenodon . Anacodon was extremely robust compared to other members of its family, and may have been capable of climbing and digging like modern bears.

Taxonomy

Early history

The first specimens of Anacodon to be discovered were a pair of mandibular rami, apparently from different individuals. In 1882, they were described by Edward Drinker Cope. Cope assigned the new genus to Phenacodontidae. [1] Ten years later, in 1892, Henry Fairfield Osborn and Jacob Lawson Wortman instead assigned it to the family Arctocyonidae. [2] In 1915, a second species of Anacodon, A. cultridens, was named by Walter Granger and William Diller Matthew. [3] In 1937, George Gaylord Simpson suggested that Anacodon may have represented a late-surviving member of an arctocyonid lineage deriving from Claenodon . [4] A second mandible, considerably smaller than A. ursidens, was later recovered in the Buckman Hollow locality of Wyoming's Almy Formation, and in 1956, it was formally described by Charles Lewis Gazin. He tentatively assigned it to Anacodon, assigning to it the binomial name Anacodon? nexus, though noted that it may have been a species of Claenodon. [5] In 2006, it was tentatively reassigned to Arctocyon. [6] Postcranial remains of Anacodon have since been recovered from the Willwood Formation of Wyoming. [7]

Description

The holotype of Anacodon, consisting of two mandibular rami, preserves only the molars, with the exception of what may represent the fourth premolar on the more damaged mandible; the other premolars are not preserved. The overall morphology of the teeth resembles modern bears, [1] being flatter and more crenulated than in other arctocyonids. [1] Anacodon may have been trending away from carnivory and towards a more herbivorous diet. [8] Anacodon is unusually robust by arctocyonid standards, to the point where the remains of its postcranial skeleton were initially mistaken for those of a taeniodont. In many respects, it resembles a larger version of the related Chriacus . The forelimbs were extremely robust, more so than the hind limbs, with curved ungual phalanges. A small spur on the tibia interlocked with the astragalus, restricting mediolateral (side-to-side) movement of the foot. The calcaneus of the foot is unusual in that it is strongly arched, a morphology otherwise only seen in certain hominids, ursids, and the giant anteater. Its overall morphology suggests that it may have been analogous to bears, being partly arboreal and fossorial. [7]

The genus has been historically placed in the families Mesonychidae or Arctocyonidae, or was considered to be a close relative of whales. It is now regarded as the sole member of its own family, Andrewsarchidae, and may have been related to entelodonts. Fossils of Andrewsarchus have been recovered from the Middle Eocene Irdin Manha, Lushi, and Dongjun Formations of Inner Mongolia, each dated to the Irdinmanhan Asian land mammal age.

Creodonta is a former order of extinct carnivorous placental mammals that lived from the early Paleocene to the late Miocene epochs in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Originally thought to be a single group of animals ancestral to the modern Carnivora, this order is now usually considered a polyphyletic assemblage of two different groups, the oxyaenids and the hyaenodonts, not a natural group. Oxyaenids are first known from the Palaeocene of North America, while hyaenodonts hail from the Palaeocene of Africa.

<i>Arctocyon</i> Extinct genus of mammals

Arctocyon is an extinct genus of large placental mammals, part of the possibly polyphyletic family Arctocyonidae. The type species is A. primaevus, though up to five other species may be known. Fossils of Arctocyon have been found in Europe and North America. Arctocyon was originally named as a subgenus of the bear-dog Amphicyon, though was subsequently found to belong to a genus and family of its own. The relationship between arctocyonids and other placentals is unclear, with early classification efforts placing them as carnivores or creodonts, and later ones classifying them under Condylarthra, a wastebasket taxon for various early ungulates. More recent phylogenetic analyses suggest that arctocyonids are an artificial assemblage of several distantly-related placental lineages, and Arctocyon may be closely related to Loxolophus and to pantodonts.

Arctocyonidae is an extinct, possibly polyphyletic family of placental mammals which lived from the late Cretaceous to the early Eocene. They were initially regarded as creodonts, though have since been reassigned to an order of their own, the Arctocyonia. Some have suggested that arctocyonids are ancestral to modern-day artiodactyls, or that they form a sister group. However, more recent phylogenetic analyses suggest that arctocyonids may represent an artificial grouping of extinct ungulates, or that they might be an assemblage of unrelated placentals related to pangolins, pantodonts, and periptychids.

Triisodon is a genus of extinct mesonychian mammal that existed during the Early Paleocene of New Mexico, North America, from about 63.5-62.0 Ma. The genus was named by Edward Drinker Cope in 1881 as a member of the Acreodi, a now invalid taxon that encompassed creodonts, mesonychians and certain arctocyonians. Cope described the type specimen of T. quivirensis as "about the size of a wolf." A smaller species, T. crassicuspis, has also been identified from the same region. Since material from this genus is incomplete, the exact size of adults and whether they showed sexual dimorphism or regional variations in size is unknown.

The Willwood Formation is a sedimentary sequence deposited during the late Paleocene to early Eocene, or Clarkforkian, Wasatchian and Bridgerian in the NALMA classification.

The Wasatch Formation (Tw) is an extensive highly fossiliferous geologic formation stretching across several basins in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah and western Colorado. It preserves fossils dating back to the Early Eocene period. The formation defines the Wasatchian or Lostcabinian, a period of time used within the NALMA classification, but the formation ranges in age from the Clarkforkian to Bridgerian.

<i>Ignacius</i> Extinct genus of mammals

Ignacius is a genus of extinct mammal from the early Cenozoic era. This genus is present in the fossil record from around 62-33 Ma. The earliest known specimens of Ignacius come from the Torrejonian of the Fort Union Formation, Wyoming and the most recent known specimens from Ellesmere Island in northern Canada. Ignacius is one of ten genera within the family Paromomyidae, the longest living family of any plesiadapiforms, persisting for around 30 Ma during the Paleocene and Eocene epochs. The analyses of postcranial fossils by paleontologists suggest that members of the family Paromomyidae, including the genus Ignacius, most likely possessed adaptations for arboreality.

Wyonycteris is a genus of small mammals that existed in the late Paleocene and early Eocene epochs. The type species is Wyonycteris chalix, which lived in Wyoming during the Clarkforkian North American Land Mammal Age of the Paleocene and was originally proposed to be an early form of insectivorous bat. Later re-examination of the material has put this alliance in doubt, and the genus has instead been proposed as belonging to the subfamily Placentidentinae, within the family Nyctitheriidae. Similar fossil material of the same time period found in Europe was later discovered and described as new species, Wyonycteris richardi.

Chiromyoides is a small plesiadapid primatomorph that is known for its unusually robust upper and lower incisors, deep dentary, and comparatively small cheek teeth. Species of Chiromyoides are known from the middle Tiffanian through late Clarkforkian North American Land Mammal Ages (NALMA) of western North America, and from late Paleocene deposits in the Paris Basin, France.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nyctitheriidae</span> Family of extinct eulipotyphlan insectivores from the Paleocene and Eocene

Nyctitheriidae is a family of extinct eulipotyphlan insectivores known from the Paleocene and Eocene epochs of North America and Asia and persisting into the Oligocene of Europe. Several genera, including Nyctitherium, Paradoxonycteris, and Wyonycteris, have initially been described as bats, although the family is more frequently placed in the order Eulipotyphla.

Azygonyx was a small tillodont mammal, likely the size of a cat to raccoon, that lived in North America during the Paleocene and Eocene in the early part of the Cenozoic Era. The only fossils that have been recovered are from the Willwood and Fort Union Formations in the Bighorn Basin of Wyoming, United States, and date to the Clarkforkian to Wasatchian, about 56 to 50 million years ago. Fifty-six collections that have been recovered thus far include the remains of Azygonyx. Azygonyx survived the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum along with other mammals like Phenacodus and Ectocion, both of which were ground-dwelling mammals. Azygonyx probably was a generalist terrestrial mammal that may have roamed around the ground, but was also capable of climbing trees.

Oxyclaenus is a genus of arctocyonid from the Lower Palaeocene of North America. Originally named as a subgenus of Mioclaenus, it is now regarded as a genus of its own. Three species, are known, though several more have been named over the decades.

Loxolophus is a genus of large arctocyonid from the early Palaeocene of North America. Two species are currently recognised: the type species, Loxolophus hyattianus, and L. priscus.
