The AnsaldoBreda P2550 is an articulated high-floor electric light rail vehicle manufactured by AnsaldoBreda for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Metro Rail system. [2] 50 vehicles were built between 2005 and 2011, with the first entering service in 2008.
In 2001, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) began seeking bids for a new order of light rail vehicles for the Gold Line. [3] Four companies submitted proposals; Bombardier, Kinki Sharyo, Siemens, and AnsaldoBreda. Siemens's proposal did not meet LACMTA requirements, and Bombardier declined to bid due to the terms of the contract. [3]
AnsaldoBreda's bid was lower than that of Kinki Sharyo, and as a result, on April 24, 2003, LACMTA awarded a contract to AnsaldoBreda for the production of 50 new light rail vehicles at a cost of $158 million, with options for a further 100 vehicles. [3] [4] All trains were to be delivered by 2007. [5]
Bodyshells for the cars were built in Pistoia, Italy, with final assembly in Pittsburg, California. [6] The first vehicles were delivered to Metro in 2005 [7] and were first tested on the Blue Line before becoming exclusive to the Gold Line. Trains first entered service in May 2008, significantly behind the contracted schedule. [8] By 2009, delivery of trains was around three years behind schedule, and Metro alleged that trains were at least 5,000 lb (2,300 kg) overweight. [9] [10] [11] AnsaldoBreda offered to supply Metro with 50 additional trains at a cost of $300 million, with an additional 2 trains as compensation for delivery delays. [10]
Metro decided not to exercise their options to purchase additional P2550 vehicles from AnsaldoBreda, [10] [12] and ordered 235 Kinki Sharyo P3010 vehicles in 2012. [13] Following the difficulties of the P2550 procurement process, LACMTA revised its quality control procedures for new rolling stock, and began using best value procurement for future contracts. Kinki Sharyo is refurbishing the fleet at their Palmdale, California facility, beginning in 2023 with Car 721. Components to be upgraded include doors, safety systems, trucks, and climate control systems. [15] [16]
From the beginning of Spring 2023, the P2550 became available to the original A Line (Los Angeles—Long Beach) outside of the former L Line as a result of the completed rail construction and later opening of the Regional Connector.

Hitachi Rail Italy S.p.A. is a multinational rolling stock manufacturer company based in Pistoia, Italy. Formerly AnsaldoBreda S.p.A., a subsidiary of state-owned Finmeccanica, the company was sold in 2015 to Hitachi Rail of Japan. After the deal was finalized, the current name was adapted in November 2015 to reflect the new ownership.
The A Line is a light rail line in Los Angeles County, California. It is one of the six lines of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system, operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). The A Line serves 44 stations and runs east-west between Azusa and Pasadena, then north-south between Pasadena and Long Beach, interlining and sharing five stations with the E Line in Downtown Los Angeles. It operates for approximately 19 hours per day with headways of up to 8 minutes during peak hours. It runs for 48.5 miles (78.1 km), making it the world's longest light rail line since 2023.
The L Line and Gold Line are former designations for a section of the current Los Angeles Metro Rail system. These names referred to a single light rail line of 31 miles (50 km) providing service between Azusa and East Los Angeles via the northeastern corner of Downtown Los Angeles, serving several attractions, including Little Tokyo, Union Station, the Southwest Museum, Chinatown, and the shops of Old Pasadena. The line, formerly one of seven in the system, entered service in 2003. The L Line served 26 stations.
The E Line is a 22-mile (35 km) light rail line in Los Angeles County, California. It is one of the six lines of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system, operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). The E Line runs east-west and serves 29 stations between East Los Angeles and Santa Monica. It interlines and shares five stations with the A Line in Downtown Los Angeles. Service operates for 21 hours per day with headways of up to 8 minutes during peak hours. The E Line, the second-busiest light rail line in the system, saw an average of 41,902 passengers on weekdays in October 2023.

The C Line is a 19.3-mile (31.1 km) light rail line running between the Los Angeles neighborhood of Westchester and the city of Norwalk within Los Angeles County, California. It is one of six lines forming the Los Angeles Metro Rail system and opened on August 12, 1995. Along the route, the line also serves the cities of Downey, Hawthorne, and Lynwood, as well as several unincorporated communities in the South Los Angeles region including Athens, Del Aire, and Willowbrook. The fully grade-separated route runs mainly in the median strip of Interstate 105 for its latitude portion and in a mixture of viaducts, embankments, and an open trench for its western leg. A free shuttle bus to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is available at Aviation/LAX station.
Kinki Sharyo Co., Ltd. is a Japanese manufacturer of railroad vehicles based in Osaka. It is an affiliate company of Kintetsu Corporation. In business since 1920 as Tanaka Rolling Stock Works, and renamed The Kinki Sharyo Co., Ltd in 1945, they produce rolling stock for numerous transportation agencies, ranging from Shinkansen high-speed trains to light rail vehicles. Kinki Sharyo is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange as TYO: 7122.
The US Standard Light Rail Vehicle (SLRV) was a light rail vehicle (LRV) built by Boeing Vertol in the 1970s. The Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) of the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) promoted it as a standardized vehicle for U.S. cities. Part of a series of defense conversion projects in the waning days of the Vietnam War, the SLRV was seen as both a replacement for older PCC streetcars in many cities and as a catalyst for cities to construct new light rail systems. The US SLRV was marketed as and is popularly known as the Boeing LRV or SLRV, and should not be confused with their prior lunar roving vehicles for NASA.
The A650 is an electric multiple unit rapid transit car built for use on the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. The cars were manufactured by the Italian company Breda at its Pistoia plant in Italy between 1988 and 1997 and are used on the Metro B and D Lines.
The Green Mover Max was the first 100% low-floor articulated Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) to be built entirely in Japan. It was developed jointly by Kinki Sharyo, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Toyo Denki, and introduced first in Hiroshima by the Hiroshima Electric Railway Company (Hiroden). It replaced Hiroden's ailing fleet of Siemens Combinos in 2005.

As of 2015, more than 3,500 Flexity vehicles are in operation around the world in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and North America in 100 cities among 20 countries internationally. Production of the vehicles is done at Bombardier's global production plants and by local manufacturers worldwide through technology transfer agreements.

The P2000 is an articulated light rail vehicle used on the Los Angeles Metro Rail system, manufactured by Siemens-Duewag. The P2000 trains were ordered to supplement the fleet of the C Line, then known as the Green Line. P2000 trains originally serviced the Gold Line, but were later transferred to the Blue Line in 2012.
The P865 and P2020 are retired articulated light rail vehicles used on the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. They were manufactured by Nippon Sharyo and used on the A, C (P2020), and E lines.
The P3010 is an articulated light rail car used on the Los Angeles Metro Rail system manufactured by Kinki Sharyo, operated on all of the Metro Rail light rail lines.
MBTA AnsaldoBreda Type 8 is a light rail vehicle that was built by Breda for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA). The cars were constructed from 1998-2007 and replaced all remaining Boeing LRVs. They were built to have a low-floor section to allow for accessibility by all. As of 2018, most cars are coupled to one Kinki Sharyo Type 7 in regular service to create a two-car train with one accessible car. They run on all branches of the Green Line. The MBTA currently runs 92 out of 95 Type 8 vehicles, numbered 3800 to 3894. They are maintained at the Reservoir and Riverside carhouses.
The LRTA 1200 class is the third-generation class of high-floor light rail vehicles (LRV) of the LRT Line 1.
MBTA Kinki Sharyo Type 7 is a type of light rail vehicle owned by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Since 1986, the MBTA has used the Type 7 on its Green Line light rail network. It is the first rail vehicle for the United States built by Japanese rail vehicle manufacturer Kinki Sharyo.
