Arenosicaris inflata is a Cambrian phyllocarid from the Blackberry Hill site of Wisconsin, and the oldest phyllocarid known. [1]

Description

Arenosicaris is roughly 3 cm long, with only the abdomen and carapace known. No head or thorax limbs have preserved, although there are several structures that may be thoracopods. The carapace is ovate to subovate, with possible striations on its surface. The rostral plate is unknown, and no median dorsal plate is present. The hinge line is flat or very slightly convex, with the carapace valves being slightly convex as well. The abdomen consists of seven somites which decrease slightly in width towards the posterior. Somites 1 to 5 have a pair of biramous pleopods, while somites 6 and 7 lack limbs. The telson and furcal rami are unknown. These pleopods are divided into three sections like most biramous arthropod limbs. The basipod is short and rectangular, being slightly flattened. The endopod is incompletely known, while the exopod is large and U-shaped, decreasing greatly in size near the posterior. No setae are known from the limbs. Arenosicaris is unusual among phyllocarid fossils for its preservation of limbs, if only partial. The thoracopods were likely quite fragile, hence their poor preservation. [1] Arenosicaris's position is currently uncertain within Archaeostraca, although it may be somewhat related to the suborder Caryocaridina. [2]

Etymology

Arenosicaris derives from arenosum, meaning "a sandy place" in reference to the unusual preservation in sand, and the Greek καρις, meaning "shrimp", a common crustacean suffix. The species name inflata is in reference to the uncompressed nature of the fossils. [1]

It is found in a series of quarries and outcrops that are notable for their large concentration of exceptionally preserved trace fossils in Cambrian tidal flats. One quarry in particular also has the distinction of preserving some of the first land animals. These are preserved as three-dimensional casts, which is unusual for Cambrian animals that are only lightly biomineralized. Additionally, Blackberry Hill is the first occurrence recognized to include Cambrian mass strandings of scyphozoans (jellyfish).

Erratus is an extinct genus of marine arthropod from the Cambrian of China. Its type and only species is Erratus sperare. Erratus is likely one of the most basal known arthropods, and its discovery has helped scientists understand the early evolution of arthropod trunk appendages. Some of the stem-arthropods like radiodonts did not have legs, instead they had flap like appendages that helped them swim. Erratus on the other hand had not only flaps but also a set of primitive legs. It also supported the theory that the gills of aquatic arthropods probably evolved into the wings and lungs of terrestrial arthropods later in the Paleozoic.

<i>Acheronauta</i> Possible extinct mandibulate arthropod

Acheronauta is a genus of extinct worm-shaped arthropod that lived in the early Silurian Waukesha biota fossil site in southeast Wisconsin. This arthropod was first discovered alongside the biota in 1985, but was not fully described until October 2022. This creature was recognized and described as a possible early mandibulate. This description is very important as much of the fauna of the biota remain undescribed, and its discovery has allowed for paleontologists to get a better grasp of the diversity of the arthropod fauna at the site. Multiple phylogenetic analyses were performed, and it was found that this arthropod forms a previously undiscovered clade with the Devonian stem-arthropod Captopodus, and the somewhat enigmatic group Thylacocephala.

<i>Apankura</i> Extinct genus of euthycarcinoid

Apankura machu is a Cambrian euthycarcinoid from the Santa Rosita Formation of Argentina. It was at one point the only Cambrian euthycarcinoid. However, Mosineia and Mictomerus are likely older.

Mictomerus melochevillensis is a Cambrian euthycarcinoid from the Potsdam Group of Quebec. It is known from 29 specimens, all but one preserved ventrally.
