Ariunculus is a genus of air-breathing land slugs in the family Arionidae, the roundback slugs. Sometimes it has been considered as a subgenus of Arion , [2] [3] [4] and sometimes the subgenus Ichnusarion has been raised to generic rank. [5]

Etymology

The stem of Arion plus the suffix -unculus, which is a diminutive in Latin. Hence "little Arion". Pollonera [6] justifies why "Ariunculus" is appropriate rather than "Arionculus" (cf. "homo" and "homunculus").

The subgenus name Ichnusarion is also based on " Arion ", to which has been added "Ichnusa", a Latin name of Sardinia, where the single species of this subgenus is endemic.

Species

Only two species are currently recognised: [7]

subgenus Ariuncululus

subgenus Ichnusarion Pollonera, 1890 [6]

Other species have been discounted as distinct members of the genus: [7]

Diagnostic characters

Genital characters that have been proposed as diagnostic of the genus are:

At least in one species of Ariunculus, this last character reflects that sperm is transferred naked rather than in a spermatophore formed in the epiphallus; this is a fundamental contrast with Arion and Geomalacus . [7]

Ariunculus differs from Geomalacus , and is similar to Arion , in that the caudal gland is prominent and the mantle contains only calcareous granules rather than a shell plate. [6]

Mario Lessona was an Italian zoologist and malacologist. He was the son of the prominent natural scientist and senator Michele Lessona and his wife Adele Masi Lessona, who was very much involved in her husband's work, particularly in making translations. A son of Adele Lessona by an earlier marriage was the painter and malacologist Carlo Pollonera, with whom Mario published a monograph on Italian slugs. Mario also coauthored various scientific works with his brother-in-law, the zoologist and senator Lorenzo Camerano.

This bibliography lists publications authored by the Italian malacologist and painter Carlo Pollonera (1849-1923). The article endeavours to be comprehensive, and includes all works listed in previous bibliographies of Pollonera. Zoological Record and AnimalBase have also been utilised. Works listed without an internet link have generally not been examined directly. Ambigolimax Genus of gastropods

Ambigolimax is a genus of air-breathing land slugs in the family Limacidae, the keelback slugs. There is still ongoing disagreement whether it is more appropriate to consider Ambigolimax as merely a subgenus of Lehmannia; the evidence for splitting them is phylogenetic trees constructed on the basis of DNA sequences.

Deroceras cecconii Species of gastropod

Deroceras cecconii is a species of air-breathing land slug, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Agriolimacidae. Although it was long considered a synonym of Deroceras panormitanum, a 2020 article establishes that it is a distinct species widely distributed in the central part of the Italian peninsula. It is also known as an introduction at one site in eastern Germany.

The name Ambigolimax nyctelius has been used to refer to several species of air-breathing land slugs in the family Limacidae. An article published in 2022 revealed this confusion and furthermore showed that the original description applied to a slug species in a different family. The above names are therefore no longer appropriate and care is need to interpret the meaning of earlier usages.

Letourneuxia nyctelia is a species of terrestrial slug, a gastropod mollusc, belonging to the family Arionidae.

Ariunculus isselii Species of gastropod

Ariunculus isselii is a species of terrestrial slug belonging to the family Arionidae. Previously it has been placed in the genus Arion or in its own genus Ichnusarion; the latter is more often treated as a subgenus.
