Armenia in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest

Armenia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019, held in Gliwice, Poland on 24 November 2019. The Armenian broadcaster Armenian Public Television (ARMTV) was responsible for organising their entry for the contest. Karina Ignatyan was chosen with her song "Colours of Your Dream".

Background

Prior to the 2019 contest, Armenia had participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest twelve times since its first entry in 2007, with their best result being in 2010 when they won with the song "Mama", performed by Vladimir Arzumanyan.^[1] Armenia went on to host the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in the Armenian capital Yerevan.^[2] In the 2018 contest, Levon represented country in Minsk, Belarus with the song "L.E.V.O.N". The song ended 9th out of 20 entries with 125 points.

Before Junior Eurovision

Depi Mankakan Evratesil 2019

Depi Makankan Evratesil 2019 (Armenian : Դեպի Մանկական Եվրատեսիլ 2019; "Towards Junior Eurovision 2019") was the second edition of the national final Depi Mankakan Evratesil and selected the Armenian entry for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019. The competition took place on 15 September 2019 at the AMPTV studios in Yerevan. Ten entries competed and the winner was determined by the combination of votes from international and Armenian jury panels and a public vote. The show was broadcast on Armenia 1 as well as online via the broadcaster's website 1tv.am.

Competing entries

A submission period for artists was held from 19 June 2019.^[3] Auditions were held to select the participants for the live show, and the ten finalists were revealed on 3 September 2019.^[4]

Final

The national final took place on 15 September 2019.^[5] The winner was decided through a combination of SMS voting (1/3), an international adult jury (1/3) and an international kids jury (1/3).^[6] At the end of the event, Karina Ignatyan (Armenian : Կարինա Իգնատյան, born on 7 July 2006) was selected with the song "Colours of Your Dream".^[7] The song was written by Taras Demchuk, Avet Barseghyan and Margarita Doroshevish and contained lyrics in Armenian and English.

At Junior Eurovision

During the opening ceremony and the running order draw which both took place on 18 November 2019, Armenia was drawn to perform 15th at the 24 November 2019 contest, following Netherlands and preceding Portugal.^[8] Vika Martirosyan was the organizer and choreographer of the dance in both the music video and stage performance.^[9] The Armenian entry came 9th with 115 points.

Voting

The same voting system that was introduced in the 2017 edition was used, where the results were determined by 50% online voting and 50% jury voting. Every country had a national jury that consisted of three music industry professionals and two children aged between 10 and 15 who were citizens of the country they represented. The rankings of those jurors were combined to make an overall top ten.^[10]

The online voting consisted of two phases. The first phase of the online voting began on 22 November 2019 when a recap of all the rehearsal performances was shown on the contest's website Junioreurovision.tv before the viewers could vote. After this, voters also had the option to watch longer one-minute clips from each participant's rehearsal. This first round of voting ended on Sunday 24 November at 15:59 CET. The second phase of the online voting took place during the live show and began right after the last performance and was open for 15 minutes. International viewers were able vote for a minimum of three and a maximum of five songs.^[11] They were also able to vote for their own country's song. These votes were then turned into points which were determined by the percentage of votes received. For example, if a song received 10% of the votes, it received 10% of the available points.

Michael Grigoryan, also known as Misha, was internally selected on 18 July 2017 as the Armenian representative. His song for the contest, "Boomerang", was revealed on 23 October 2017.

Portugal participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019 which took place on 24 November 2019 in Gliwice, Poland. The Portuguese broadcaster Radio and Television of Portugal (RTP) was responsible for organising their entry for the contest. Joana Almeida was internally selected on 26 September 2019 as the Portuguese representative.

Belarus participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019, held in Gliwice, Poland on 24 November 2019. The Belarusian entry for the 2019 contest was selected through a national final organised by the Belarusian broadcaster National State Television and Radio Company of the Republic of Belarus. It saw ten competing acts participating in a televised production where the winner was determined by a 50/50 combination of votes from a jury made up of music professionals and a public vote. Liza Misnikova represented Belarus with the song "Pepelny (Ashen)".

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 was the 18th edition of the annual Junior Eurovision Song Contest, organised by Telewizja Polska (TVP) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The contest took place on 29 November 2020, and was held in Warsaw, Poland, following the country's victory at the 2019 contest with the song "Superhero" by Viki Gabor. "Chains on You" is a song by Greek-Armenian singer Athena Manoukian. It was to represent Armenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. The song was released as a digital download on 14 February 2020. The song is influenced by R&B and Hip-Hop music and is about individualism, empowerment and sexuality.

Kazakhstan participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020. The Kazakh entrant for the 2020 contest in Warsaw, Poland was selected through a national selection, organised by the Kazakh broadcaster Khabar Agency (KA). The semi-final took place online between 24 and 31 October 2020, while the final took place on 26 September 2020. "Forever" performed by Karakat Bashanova was as the winner.

Armenia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Paris, France, having internally selected Maléna as their representative with the song "Qami Qami". She was due to compete in the 2020 contest with the song "Why" before the country withdrew due to the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. Armenia won with 224 points; 6 points more than the runner-up Poland.

Arpine Martoyan, known professionally as Maléna, is an Armenian singer and songwriter. She represented Armenia in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song "Qami Qami", and went on to win the competition, becoming the second Armenian entrant to win the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 was the 20th edition of the annual Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The contest took place in Yerevan, Armenia on 11 December 2022, following the country's victory at the 2021 contest with the song "Qami Qami" by Maléna. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Public Television Company of Armenia (AMPTV), the contest was held at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex. This was the second time that Armenia hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the first being in 2011.

Armenia participated in and hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Yerevan, having internally selected its representative, Nare with the song "Dance!", written by Grigor Kyokchyan and Nick Egibyan.

Italy participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Yerevan, Armenia. Italian broadcaster RAI is responsible for the country's participation in the contest. Chanel Dilecta represented Italy with the song "Bla Bla Bla".
