Aronson Corner

Aronson Corner ( 80°29′S20°56′W / 80.483°S 20.933°W / -80.483; -20.933 Coordinates: 80°29′S20°56′W / 80.483°S 20.933°W / -80.483; -20.933 ) is the cliffed extremity of a snow-capped ridge between Mummery Cliff and Chevreul Cliffs in Pioneers Escarpment, Shackleton Range. It was photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy, 1967, and surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey, 196871. In association with the names of pioneers of polar life and travel, it was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Louis V. Aronson, American founder of the Ronson Corporation, who in about 1910 developed the first practical petrol lighter, known originally as the "trench match."

Mummery Cliff

Mummery Cliff is a cliff situated in Antarctica rising to about 1,250 m to the southeast of Whymper Spur in the Pioneers Escarpment, Shackleton Range. In association with the names of pioneers of polar life and travel grouped in this area, named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1971 after Albert F. Mummery (1855–95), English mountaineer and designer of the Mummery tent.

The Chevreul Cliffs are a set of cliffs rising to about 1,500 metres (5,000 ft) to the east of Mount Dewar in Pioneers Escarpment, Shackleton Range. They were photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy, 1967, and surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey, 1968–71. In association with the names of pioneers of polar life and travel grouped in this area, They were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Michel Eugene Chevreul, a French chemist whose research on the nature of fats in 1823 led to the invention of stearine candles, used subsequently by polar explorers.

Athene Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Athene Glacier is a glacier, 10 miles (16 km) long, flowing east and merging with the terminus of Casey Glacier where it discharges into Casey Inlet, on the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was photographed from the air by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in August 1947, and by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in December 1947. It was surveyed by FIDS in November 1960, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Athene (Athena), the daughter of Zeus and goddess of the city of Athens in Greek mythology.

Lancing Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Lancing Glacier is a glacier 3 nautical miles (6 km) long, flowing south from Mount Corneliussen and Smillie Peak to Newark Bay on the south side of South Georgia. It was surveyed by the South Georgia Survey in the period 1951–57, and named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for the Lancing, built in 1898, and converted to a whale factory ship in 1923. It was the first factory ship to be fitted with a slipway.

Bagshawe Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Bagshawe Glacier is a glacier which drains the northeast slopes of Mount Theodore and discharges into Lester Cove, Andvord Bay west of Mount Tsotsorkov, on the west coast of Graham Land, Antarctica.

Blanchard Hill is a hill between Mount Kelsey and Whymper Spur in the Pioneers Escarpment, eastern Shackleton Range. Photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy, 1967, it was surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey, 1968-71. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Robert Blanchard, American inventor of a light-weight tent using a rigidly tensioned frame erected outside the tent.

Orford Cliff Refuge in United Kingdom

Orford Cliff is a coastal cliff of Pernik Peninsula, Loubet Coast in Graham Land, overlooking the east side of Lallemand Fjord just east of Andresen Island. Surveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1956. Named for Michael J.H. Orford, FIDS assistant surveyor at Detaille Island in 1956, a member of the party which found a route from Detaille Island to Avery Plateau, via Orford Cliff and Murphy Glacier.

Whymper Spur

Whymper Spur is a rock spur rising to about 1,250 m eastward of Blanchard Hill in Pioneers Escarpment, Shackleton Range. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1971 after English mountaineer and artist Edward Whymper (1840–1911), who made the first ascent of the Matterhorn, Switzerland, July 14, 1865; designer of the prototype of the Whymper tent, 1861-62.

Swithinbank Glacier

Swithinbank Glacier is a glacier on the west side of Hemimont Plateau flowing north to the southeast corner of Square Bay, in Graham Land. Mapped by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) from surveys and air photos, 1946-59. Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Charles Swithinbank, British glaciologist, a participant in several British, New Zealand and American expeditions to Antarctica, 1949-62.

Mount Dewar is a mountain rising to about 1,600 metres (5,200 ft) to the southwest of Aronson Corner in the Pioneers Escarpment, Shackleton Range. It was photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy in 1967 and surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey from 1968–71. In association with the names of pioneers of polar life and travel grouped in this area, it was named in 1971 by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Sir James Dewar, a Scottish chemist and physicist who invented the thermos flask about 1892.

Turner Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Turner Glacier is a glacier on the east side of Mount Liotard flowing northeast into Ryder Bay, Adelaide Island. The glacier was surveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), 1948, and photographed from the air by Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (FIDASE), 1956-57. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1977 after Andrew John Turner, British Antarctic Survey (BAS) builder, Halley Station, 1973–74; Signy Island, 1974–75; Rothera Station, 1976–77, 1978–80; and Faraday Station, 1982-83.

Edge Glacier is a small cliff-type glacier draining northward into Davis Valley in northeast Dufek Massif, Pensacola Mountains. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1956–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Joseph L. Edge, a photographer with U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 on Operation Deep Freeze 1963 and 1964.

Flanagan Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Flanagan Glacier is a glacier in the Pioneer Heights of the Heritage Range, Antarctica, draining east from Thompson Escarpment between the Gross Hills and the Nimbus Hills to the confluent ice at the lower end of Union Glacier. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1961–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant Walter B. Flanagan, an assistant maintenance officer with U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 at McMurdo Station during Operation Deep Freeze 1963 and 1964.

Goldsmith Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Goldsmith Glacier is a glacier flowing west-northwest through the Theron Mountains of Antarctica, 6 nautical miles (11 km) south of Tailend Nunatak. It was first mapped in 1956–57 by the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (CTAE) and named for Rainer Goldsmith, medical officer with the advance party of the CTAE in 1955-56.

Lucchitta Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Lucchitta Glacier is a glacier about 20 nautical miles (37 km) long flowing south from the Hudson Mountains of Antarctica into Pine Island Bay. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after geologist Baerbel K. Lucchitta of the United States Geological Survey, Flagstaff, Arizona, a specialist in the use of satellite imagery for geological and glaciological studies from the early 1980s to the early 2000s (decade), and one of the pioneers in the use of imagery for glacier velocity measurements in Antarctica.

Mount Skidmore

Mount Skidmore is a mountain on the east side of the mouth of Stratton Glacier in the Shackleton Range. It was first mapped in 1957 by the CTAE, and it was photographed in 1967 by U.S. Navy trimetrogon aerial photography. It was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Michael J. Skidmore, a British Antarctic Survey (BAS) geologist at the Brunt Ice Shelf between 1966–69 who worked in the Shackleton Range from 1968-69.

Tartar Island is a small (13 ha), ice-free, oval-shaped island 0.6 km (0.37 mi) long, lying 0.7 km (0.43 mi) north-west of Round Point, off the north coast of King George Island in the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. It was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1960 for the sealing vessel Tartar from London, which visited the South Shetland Islands in 1821-22.

Mount Hordern is a peak, 1,510 metres (4,950 ft) high, standing 4 nautical miles (7 km) south of Mount Coates in the David Range of Antarctica. It was discovered in February 1931 by the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition under Mawson, and named for Sir Samuel Hordern, a patron of this expedition and of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition under Mawson, 1911–14.

Relay Hills is a group of low, ice-covered hills, mainly conical in shape, between Mount Edgell and Kinnear Mountains in western Antarctic Peninsula. First roughly surveyed from the ground by British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), 1936-37. Photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), November 1947. Resurveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), November 1958. The name, applied by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC), arose because both the BGLE and the FIDS sledging parties had to relay their loads through this area to the head of Prospect Glacier.

Clarke Glacier (Graham Land) glacier in Antarctica

Clarke Glacier is a 2-mile-wide, 20-mile-long glacier, located on the west coast of Graham Land in Antarctica. It flows west, along the north side of Sickle Mountain and the Baudin Peaksm, to Mikkelsen Bay.
