The Athletic Federation of North Macedonia (Macedonian Atletska Federacija na Severna Makedonija) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in North Macedonia.

The European Athletic Association is the governing body for athletics in Europe. It is one of the six Area Associations of the world's athletics governing body World Athletics. European Athletics has 51 members and is headquartered in Lausanne.
The European Athletics Championships is a biennial athletics event organised by the European Athletic Association and is recognised as the elite continental outdoor athletics championships for Europe.

The sports under the umbrella of athletics, particularly track and field, use a variety of statistics. In order to report that information efficiently, numerous abbreviations have grown to be common in the sport. Starting in 1948 by Bert Nelson and Cordner Nelson, Track & Field News became the leader in creating and defining abbreviations in this field. These abbreviations have also been adopted by, among others: World Athletics, the world governing body; various domestic governing bodies; the Association of Track and Field Statisticians; the Association of Road Racing Statisticians; the Associated Press; and individual media outlets who receive their reports. The 2018 European Athletics Championships were held in Berlin, Germany, from 6 to 12 August 2018. The championships were part of the first European Championships with other events happening in the United Kingdom.

This was the second time this event was held in the city after the 1969 edition then known as the European Indoor Games, and the first time in more than 30 years that the competition was held in Eastern Europe. The three-day competition featured 13 men's and 13 women's athletics events and took place over two morning and three afternoon sessions.
The Association of the Balkan Athletics Federations, commonly known as Balkan Athletics is the organisation which organises the annual senior Balkan Athletics Championships and Balkan Athletics Indoor Championships, as well as other competitions at junior and youth level on track and field and other surfaces.
Aleksandra Vojnevska is a sprinter from North Macedonia born on 2 May 1981. She competed in the women's 100 meters at the 2004 Summer Olympics. She was one among the top 30 participants in women's 60 meters event at the 2002 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
Macedonia competed at the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany, from 6–12 August 2018. A delegation of 2 athletes were sent to represent the country.

This was the second time this event was held in the city after the 1990 edition and the third time it was held in the United Kingdom, following the 2007 Edition in Birmingham, England. The three-day competition featured 13 men's and 13 women's athletics events and took place over three morning and three afternoon sessions.
North Macedonia competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the nation's seventh consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics and the first under the country's new name. North Macedonia won their first ever silver medal, won by Dejan Georgievski in the Men's +80 kg event in Taekwondo, with the nation having previously only received a bronze medal.
The 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships was held from 4 to 7 March 2021 at the Arena Toruń in Toruń, Poland. This was the second time this event was held in Poland after the 1975 edition in Katowice. The four-day competition featured 13 men's and 13 women's athletics events. Altogether 659 athletes from 46 countries participated in the event which is a record in the competition's history. The Netherlands topped the medal table for the first time with four gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Katarzynka, a gingerbread, was the mascot.
The 2022 European Athletics U18 Championships was the third edition of the biennial continental athletics competition for European athletes aged fifteen to seventeen. It was held in Jerusalem, Israel from 4 to 7 July at the Hebrew University Stadium. The event returned after a four-year hiatus since Gyor 2018, because Rieti 2020 was first postponed to 2021 and then cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A future edition has been awarded to Rieti for 2026.
The 2023 European Athletics U20 Championships are the twenty-seventh edition of the biennial athletics competition between European athletes under the age of twenty. The 2023 European Athletics U20 Championships are organized by European Athletics Association and held from 7–10 August 2023 in Jerusalem, Israel. Initially the competition was awarded to Cluj-Napoca, Romania but due to Cluj Arena not being fit for such championships, European Athletics decided to award the competition to Israel.
