The Kiribati Athletics Association (KAA) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in the Kiribati. [1] [2] It is suspended by Kiribati National Olympic Committee and OAA since 2020.

History

Athletes from Kiribati (then Gilbert Islands) participated already at the 1963, [3] [4] 1966, [5] and 1971 South Pacific Games, [6] as part of a combined Gilbert and Ellice Islands team. After separation of the Ellice Islands (now Tuvalu), and independence, athletes from now Kiribati attended the 1979 South Pacific Games for the first time. [7] and the Micronesian Games in 1998. [8]

The official foundation of KAA occurred in 1999, and its affiliation to the IAAF in the same year. [9]

Mwaereiti Burennatu was elected new president of KAA in 2000. [10] In April 2005, Simon Burennatu was elected president. [11] He was followed by Tierata Taukaban. In July 2009, he was replaced by Arobati Brechtefeld [12] who served until 2012.

President was Tonana George [1] [2] until his replacement by Brian Fukuyama in May 2019.

The Oceania Athletics Championships is an athletics event organized by the Oceania Athletics Association (OAA) for the World Athletics (WA) member associations of the Oceania region. First held in 1990 in Suva, it was initially conceived as a quadrennial event; however, after the second edition in 1994, the championships changed to a biennial event. After the 2010 championships, there were significant changes in the format of the competition. Now being held as a regional championships, the associations were divided into two divisions based on their geographical location. Athletics competitions at the 1995 South Pacific Games were held at the Stade Pater Te Hono Nui in Pirae, French Polynesia, between August 17–24, 1995.

Athletics competitions at the 1999 South Pacific Games were held in Santa Rita, Guam, between June 3–11, 1999.

Athletics competitions at the 2003 South Pacific Games were held at the National Stadium in Suva, Fiji, between July 7 and 12, 2003.

Athletics competitions at the 2007 Pacific Games were held at the Apia Park in Apia, Samoa, between September 3–8, 2007. A total of 45 events were contested, 23 by men and 22 by women. This year 6 games records were set.

Athletics competitions at the 1981 South Pacific Mini Games were held in Honiara, Solomon Islands, between July 8–16, 1981.

Athletics competitions at the 1997 South Pacific Mini Games were held at the Veterans Memorial Stadium in Pago Pago, American Samoa, between August 15–20, 1997.

Athletics competitions at the 2001 South Pacific Mini Games were held in Middlegate, Norfolk Island, between December 10–14, 2001.

Athletics competitions at the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games were held at the National Stadium in Koror, Palau, between July 25–29, 2005.
