The London Marathon is a long-distance running event held in London, United Kingdom, part of the World Marathon Majors. The event was first run on 29 March 1981 and has been held in the spring of every year since. Since 2010, the race has been sponsored by Virgin Money.

He won the gold medal in both the 5000 m and 10,000 m events at the 2008 Summer Olympics. At the 2004 Olympics he won the gold medal in the 10,000 m and the silver medal in the 5000 m. He is married to actress Danawit Gebregziabher and he has one younger brother, Tariku Bekele, who is also an accomplished world-class distance runner.
Haile Gebrselassie is a retired Ethiopian long-distance track and road running athlete. He won two Olympic gold medals over 10,000 metres and four World Championship titles in the event. He won the Berlin Marathon four times consecutively and also had three straight wins at the Dubai Marathon. Further to this, he won four world titles indoors and was the 2001 World Half Marathon Champion.

Eliud Kipchoge is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in the marathon and formerly the 5000 metres. He won the Olympic marathon in 2016 and is the current marathon world record holder with a time of 2:01:39 hours. Kipchoge's world record run at the 2018 Berlin Marathon broke the previous world record by 1 minute and 18 seconds. This is the greatest improvement in a marathon world record time since 1967.
Ryan Hall is a retired American long-distance runner who holds the U.S. record in the half marathon. With his half marathon record time (59:43), he became the first U.S. runner to break the one-hour barrier in the event. He is also the only American to run a sub-2:05 marathon. However, this time is not eligible to be a record due to the course being point-to-point and a net-downhill course. Hall won the marathon at the 2008 United States Olympic Trials and placed tenth in the Olympic marathon in Beijing.

España won the title after defeating C.D. Marathón in a 3-series final. Both teams qualified to the 1981 CONCACAF Champions' Cup. Additionally, Real España, Marathón, Club Deportivo Olimpia and C.D.S. Vida obtained berths to the 1981 Copa Fraternidad. Due to the national team's participation at the 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the league defined that no relegation was to take place this season. C.D. Platense which finished last, was financially penalized though.
