BMW N47 is a four-cylinder common rail diesel engine that has many improvements over its predecessor, the M47. In 2014 it was replaced with the B47. The USA market never received B47 engine. The only B diesel engine in the US received was the B57 (6 cyl) in the 2018 model 540d. The newest 4 cylinder diesel in the US was N47TU.
The N47 engine debuted in March 2007 in the facelifted 1 Series BMW E87 and E81 and was available in the 1 Series BMW E82 and E88, which were introduced later in the same year.
The engine also became available in the 5 Series BMW E60 and E61 from September 2007, several months after the 5 series was face lifted, during which time the older M47 remained available.
In the 2008 model year 3 Series E90/E91/E92/E93 when the entire 3 series range gained the company's Efficient Dynamics technology. Not long after it became available in the X3 and has since then became available in the X1.
The N47 comes as a 1.6 L; 97.5 cu in (1,598 cc) (D16) and 2.0 L; 121.7 cu in (1,995 cc) (D20) unit, the latter identical in capacity to the M47TU/TU2 series.
The 70 kW (94 hp) tune was used in the F20 114d.
The 85 kW (114 hp) tune was used in the F20 116d EfficientDynamics version.
It features the exact same performance figures on paper as the regular 116d (which utilises the D20 in an 85 kW variant) despite the smaller engine size.
The 85 kW (114 hp) tune is for the entry level E81 F20 and E87 116d, as well as the entry level 3 Series E90 316d. It was also used in the 3 Series F30 316d.

A new 120 kW (161 hp)360 N⋅m (266 lb⋅ft) derivative was introduced in September 2009 for the 2010 model year. This version featured exceptionally low CO2 emissions of only 109 g/km (6.2 oz/mi) and fuel consumption of 68.9 mpg[ clarification needed ]. [1]
This version was used in the E90 BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics and 520d F07/F10/F11.
The "standard" x20d model has extra power, producing 130 kW (174 hp) but 7 lb⋅ft (9 N⋅m) of torque less at 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft). This is found in the
In Europe, this particular version is one of the most popular engines in the entire range; the best selling 3 series is the 320d, while the 520d is the UK's best selling 5 series. [2]
The updated version of this engine introduced in March 2010 produces 135 kW (181 hp) at 4000 rpm and 380 N⋅m (280 lb⋅ft) at 1750-2750 rpm.
In October 2007, BMW introduced a twin sequential turbo model. With 150 kW (201 hp), it is the first production diesel on sale to achieve a specific output of over 100 hp (75 kW) per liter. It uses the same turbo technology first shown in the E60 535d.

The N47 engine family is prone to excessive timing chain wear and premature failure. [3] Rattling noise from the rear of the engine is indicative of the condition. Timing chain failure may call for engine replacement or a costly repair. The most seriously affected units which require the most extensive repairs were produced from 01.03.2007 to 05.01.2009. [4] However, there have been reports of timing chain failure in BMW diesel engines manufactured until 2011. At times the failure has resulted in a dangerous cut out of the engine while the vehicle was being driven - sometimes at relatively high speed. A "Quality Enhancement" was issued by BMW for some, but not all vehicles, but has since been discontinued.
The return spring on the turbo's wastegate was not originally lubricated or covered, this frequently resulted in early failure causing the waste-gate to remain partially or fully open. With the subsequent loss in boost, fuel consumption increased by 30–50%. The problem was described by BMW engineers as a "known fault" and was immediately repaired (BMW mobile engineers even carried boxes of an improved spring), however BMW refused to compensate customers for the excessive fuel consumption and denied this fault was their liability.
As the cars equipped with this engine are coming of age, some hoses in the engine bay can start to break down. This is not to be ignored, even though this does not illuminate the CEL, it just sets a code in the ECU. If the vacuum hose supplying the EGR cooler bypass valve gets a hole rubbed in it, or breaks down from old age and oil spray, the EGR cooler won't get bypassed during the engine warmup period. This causes excessive buildup in the cooler matrix, and when the engine warms up these solid chunks of buildup can detach from the EGR cooler and get sucked into the plastic intake tube, melting holes in the intake tube, causing a massive boost leak and in very rare cases an engine fire. BMW has issued a recall to over 1.6 million vehicles in 2018 for the EGR issues. [5]
The first generation of the BMW 1 Series consists of the BMW E81, BMW E82 (coupe), BMW E87 and BMW E88 (convertible) compact cars. The E81/E82/E87/E88 generation was produced from 2004 until 2013 and is sometimes collectively referred to as the E8x. The E8x replaced the 3 Series Compact as the entry-level models of the BMW range.
The fifth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model codes E90 (saloon), E91, E92 (coupé) and E93 (convertible). The model was introduced in December 2004, and produced by BMW until October 2013 and is often collectively referred to as the E90 or E9x.

The BMW M47 and Rover Group M47R are straight-4 Diesel engines. Variants were manufactured by BMW from 1998 to 2007. BMW gradually adopted high-pressure common rail fuel injection systems over the lifetime of the M47.
The BMW M57 is a straight-6 diesel engine produced from 1998 up to 2013 in BMW's upper Austrian engine plant in Steyr.
The BMW N46 is a naturally aspirated inline-four piston engines which replaced the BMW N42 and was produced from 2004 to 2015.
The BMW N52 is a naturally aspirated straight-6 petrol engine which was produced from 2004 to 2015. The N52 replaced the BMW M54 and debuted on the E90 3 Series and E63 6 Series.
The BMW N55 is a turbocharged straight-six petrol (gasoline) engine that began production in 2009. The N55 replaced the BMW N54 engine and was introduced in the F07 5 Series Gran Turismo.
The BMW N57 is a family of aluminium, turbocharged straight-6 common rail diesel engines. The engines utilize variable geometry turbochargers and Bosch piezo-electric injectors. The engine jointly replaced the M57 straight-6 and M67 V8 engines. In 2015 the N57 started to be replaced with the B57 engine, beginning with the G11 730d.
The BMW N43 is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine which was sold from 2006 to 2013. It replaced both the BMW N46 and BMW N45 engines. However the N43 was not sold in countries with high sulfur fuel, therefore the N45/N46 engines remained in production alongside the N43.
The BMW 1 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since 2004. It is the successor to the BMW 3 Series Compact and is currently in its third generation. Positioned as the entry-level model in BMW range of products, the first generation was produced in hatchback, coupé and convertible body styles.
The sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series consists of the BMW F30, BMW F31 and BMW F34 compact executive cars. The F30/F31/F34 generation was produced from October 2011 to 2019 and is often collectively referred to as the F30.
The BMW N20 is a 1.6 and 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder DOHC petrol engine with variable valve lift and variable valve timing which replaced the N53 and was produced from 2011 to 2017 by BMW. Although the N20 is a four-cylinder engine, it is considered a replacement for the naturally aspirated six-cylinder N52/N53 because it powers equivalent models, producing similar horsepower to the N52/N53 with greater low-rpm torque and better efficiency.
The second generation of the BMW 1 Series consists of the BMW F20 and BMW F21 subcompact cars. The F20/F21 generation was produced by BMW from 2011 to 2019 and is often collectively referred to as the F20.
The BMW B37 is a 1.5-litre (1,496 cc), diesel, straight-three engine with a single, mono-scroll and variable-geometry turbocharger. The compression ratio is 16.5:1. It is the second engine from BMW's modular engine plan, sharing most of its components with the BMW B38 petrol engine. Power output is either 70 or 85 kW.
The ZF S6-37 is a 6-speed manual transmission manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen AG. It is designed for longitudinal engine applications, and is rated to handle up to 370 newton-metres (273 lbf⋅ft) of torque.
The BMW B48 is a turbocharged inline-four petrol engine which replaced the BMW N20 and has been in production since 2014. It was first used in the F56 Mini Hatch and has been used in BMW applications since 2015.
The BMW B47 is a four-cylinder common rail diesel engine produced by BMW. It debuted in 2014 as the successor to the previous N47 engine. While the B47D models are used in rear-wheel drive cars, the B47C variants are used with front-wheel drive.
The Toyota WW engine family is a series of 16 valve DOHC inline-4 turbo diesel engines with common rail injection. These engines are based on the BMW N47, modified for use in Toyota vehicles, starting with the Verso in 2014. This involved the development of a number of new components, including engine mounts, a dual-mass flywheel, a new gearbox housing and gearing and a stop/start system to further improve efficiency and reduce emissions. The WW engine is offered in 1.6 and 2.0 liter versions.
The ZF S6-53 is a 6-speed manual transmission manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen AG. It is designed for longitudinal engine applications, and is rated to handle up to 600 newton-metres (443 lbf⋅ft) of torque.
