Backwoods Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, Australia. [1]

Contents

History

Backwoods Gallery opened in the back streets of Collingwood in 2010 with the purpose of exhibiting contemporary art by emerging artists from Australia and around the world. Backwoods was founded by members of the Everfresh Studio and 25 Easey St community. The name 'Backwoods' was taken from an early Everfresh group show, rolling papers & our location – the depths of Collingwood.

Anthony Lister is a contemporary Australian artist. Lister helped pioneer the street art movement in his home city Brisbane as a teenager, and later in the inner suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne. His artistic style employs charcoal, acrylic, spray paint, and oil. His exhibitions include those held at the Urban Spree Gallery in Berlin, Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami, Allouche Gallery in New York, Olsen Gallery in Sydney and Black Art Projects in Melbourne.

Melbourne, the capital of Victoria and the second largest city in Australia, has gained international acclaim for its diverse range of street art and associated subcultures. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, much of the city's disaffected youth were influenced by the graffiti of New York City, which subsequently became popular in Melbourne's inner suburbs, and along suburban railway and tram lines.

Jen Stark is a multi-media American artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Stark is best known for creating optical art using psychedelic colors in patterns and drips that mimic intricate motifs found in nature. On March 26, 2021, Stark became a notable non-fungible token maker when Farzin Fardin Fard (3fmusic) won a bid to buy her piece Multiverse for 150 Ethereum.

Joe Ledbetter is an American artist and art toy designer from Los Angeles. He is considered part of the Pop Surrealism, Lowbrow Art Movement and Art and Designer Toys movement.

Hannah Stouffer is an American artist, illustrator and art director living and working in Los Angeles, California. She became known through her art exhibitions, as well as for her contributions to the making of individual and collective art installations and murals worldwide. As a book author, her curatorial review of contemporary ceramics and its methods The New Age of Ceramics has received distinct attention in specialized art sources. Stouffer also acted as curator and designer of illuminated works Lust for Light, printed and distributed by Gingko Press.

Nathan Spoor is an American artist, writer, and art curator. He is known for his acrylic paintings and the popularization of the Suggestivism art movement.

Shin Kwangho (Korean: 신광호) is a South Korean painter currently based in Seoul. He studied art at Keimyung University. He paints distorted portraits, which he creates using oil, acrylic, and charcoal.

James Reka is a street artist from Melbourne, Australia, later based in Berlin, Germany. Reka first started as a graffiti artist in the 1990s, moving to street art including large murals later.

Troy Brooks is a Canadian painter. His art is narrative film noir style portraits of elongated female protagonists which are part of the contemporary Pop Surrealism scene. The Globe and Mail wrote in a 2018 review titled "A Road Trip into Our Psyches"; "a typical Brooks she-devil subject has an elongated face and body, is dead white, dressed elaborately, surrounded by weird animal familiars and/or horrific accidents, and is perhaps transgendered."

Allison Schulnik is an American painter, sculptor and animated filmmaker. She is known for her heavily textured, impasto oil paintings and her animated short videos. Schulnik is married to fellow artist Eric Yahnker. They live and work in Sky Valley, California.

Pat Perry is an American painter and street artist based in Detroit, Michigan. He is best known for a series of sketchbooks and 35mm photographs documenting years of itinerant traveling around the United States and painting realistic depictions of 21st century America. His practice also includes mural painting, photography, illustration, storytelling, and freight train tagging.
