Competition format

Nine teams were drawn into groups of two. The top two performing teams in each group advance to the knockout stage. Each tie consists of five matches, one for each discipline (men's / women's singles, men's / women's / mixed doubles). In the knockout stage, the winner of each group will face the runner-up of the opposite group.

The 9th All-Africa Games took place between 11 and 23 July 2007 in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria. Algiers is the first city to hold All-Africa Games for a second time. The 2006 Thomas & Uber Cups Preliminaries for Africa were held in Rose Hill, Mauritius, between 19 and 23 February 2006, and organised by Mauritius Badminton Association. South Africa was the defending champion in men's and women's team events. This tournament serves as qualification stage for African countries for the 2006 Thomas & Uber Cup. South Africa men's and women's team qualified to compete at the 2006 Thomas & Uber Cup held in Japan.

The 2018 Thomas Cup qualification process is a series of tournaments organised by the five BWF confederations to decide 14 of the 16 teams which will play in the 2018 Thomas Cup, with Thailand qualifying automatically as hosts, and Denmark qualifying automatically as trophy holder.

Badminton events at the 2019 African Games took place between 22 and 29 August at the Ain Chock Indoor Sports Center in Casablanca, Morocco. The badminton program in 2019 included men's and women's singles competitions; men's, women's and mixed doubles competitions alongside a mixed team event throughout the eight days of competition. The tournament served as a qualifier for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

The tournament was hosted at Bangkok, Thailand in the Impact Arena from 8 to 15 May 2022. This marks the third time Thailand has hosted the Thomas Cup, and second time for the Uber Cup.

The mixed team badminton event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games was held from 29 July to 2 August at the National Exhibition Centre in Solihull.

The Madagascar national badminton team represents Madagascar in international badminton team competitions. The team is controlled by the Madagascar Badminton Federation. The Malagasy mixed team made their debut in the 1998 African Badminton Championships and finished in third place.

Badminton was contested at the 2004 Arab Games. The events were held at the Mokhtar-Aribi Hall in El Biar, Algiers, Algeria from 26 September to 4 October 2004.

The mixed team badminton event at the 2003 All-Africa Games was held from 5 to 8 October at the Indoor Sports Halls National Stadium in Abuja.

The mixed team badminton event at the 2011 All-Africa Games was held from 6 to 8 September at the Escola Josina Machel Hall in Maputo. 13 teams competed in this event. Egypt withdrew from the competition and only participated in the individual events.

The mixed team badminton event at the 2015 African Games was held from 2 to 5 September at the Gymnase Étienne Mongha in Brazzaville.
