Palembang is the capital city of the Indonesian province of South Sumatra. The city proper covers 352.51 square kilometres on both banks of the Musi River in the eastern lowlands of southern Sumatra. It had a population of 1,668,848 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 1,729,546. Palembang is the second most populous city in Sumatra, after Medan, and the twelfth most populous city in Indonesia.
Lampung, officially the Province of Lampung, is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the southern tip of the island of Sumatra. It has a short border with the province of Bengkulu to the northwest, and a longer border with the province of South Sumatra to the north, as well a maritime border with the province of Banten and Jakarta to the east. It is the original home of the Lampung people, who speak their own language, and possess their own written script. Its capital is Bandar Lampung.
The Trans-Sumatra Highway is a primary north–south road in the Indonesian island of Sumatra, 2,508.5 km in length, and connecting the northern island at Banda Aceh to Bandar Lampung in the south, running through many major cities, traversing Medan, Pekanbaru, Jambi, and Palembang along the way. Upgrade work is expected to begin in March 2013 transforming it into a full-fledged highway, including land acquisition.

The toll road is the land transportation backbone of the island and is the most important toll road network of the country. The toll road has a total length of 1,167 kilometres (725 mi).

This toll road was originally planned to connect to the established toll road system of Java through the now cancelled Sunda Strait Bridge. The toll road is to include supporting corridors connecting the cities of Padang, Bengkulu, and Sibolga on the western coast of the island to the main corridors stretching across the more populated eastern coast. State construction company Hutama Karya has been given a government-granted monopoly to operate the network.
Tanjung Priok Access Toll Road is a toll road that provides direct access to or from Tanjung Priok Port, which is part of Jakarta Outer Ring Road 2 road network in Jakarta, Indonesia. This 11.4 km highway is part of the Jabodetabek toll road network system connected to the Jakarta Outer Ring Road and Jakarta Inner Ring Road. The toll road was inaugurated on 15 April 2017.
Menggala is a subdistrict and a town in Tulang Bawang Regency, at the southeastern portion of Sumatra. It is the seat of the regency, with a population of about 51,574 in mid 2022. Menggala administratively covers an area of 344 square kilometers. The town's current administrative situation, as a kecamatan or a district of the Lampung province, was established in 1946. It is about 100 km away from the city of Bandar Lampung.

The 10.6-kilometer toll road section connects with the existing Purbaleunyi Toll Road, linking Soreang, the capital of Bandung Regency, with a direct access to the capital city Jakarta and the Cikarang industrial area to the north. The toll road will connect directly to Purbaleunyi Toll Road at KM 132, which connects westward to Cikampek and Jakarta and eastward to Cileunyi. The toll road was inaugurated by Indonesian President Joko Widodo on 4 December 2017.

The toll road is managed by PT Waskita Sriwijaya Tol stretching from the township of Kayu Agung, passing through the major city of Palembang, and terminating at the township of Betung. The toll road connects Lampung–Palembang corridor with the Palembang–Jambi corridor of Trans-Sumatra Toll Road network.
