Ben Buckingham (born 8 November 1991) [1] is an Australian track and field athlete who specializes in the 3000 metres steeplechase.
Buckingham grew up on a 600-acre cattle farm and started serious running at the age of 10 with his mother. When he was 18 years of age he left his hometown of Myrtleford, Victoria to go to the University of Melbourne. Buckingham continued his running and came third in the 2010 National U20 steeplechase. Buckingham made his international debut at the 2010 World Mountain Running Championships in Slovenia, competing in the junior race. After completing his studies he ran 8:03 (3000m) and 8:54 (steeple) and was placed third in the national championships in the summer of 2016.2017. In 2019 he dropped to 7:54.00 (3000m) and 8:27.51 (steeple) and won the Oceania Championships. [2]
Buckingham completed his second degree (Juris Doctor/law and Arts - history/international relations) at the age of 25 in 2016. He trained full time for six months before starting work as a Lawyer at Minter Ellison. [2]
Buckingham won the gold medal in the men's 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2019 Oceania Athletics Championships held in Townsville, Australia. [3] He also competed in the men's 3000 metres steeplechase event at the 2019 World Athletics Championships held in Doha, Qatar. [1] He did not qualify to compete in the final. [1]
In 2020, Buckingham headed to Europe where he clocked two 8:24s with a best of 8:24.39 to move to sixth Australian all-time. [2]
Buckingham qualified for the men's 3000 metres steeplechase event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. [4] He ran seventh in the Men's 3000m steeplechase heat with a time of 8:20.95, missing out on the final. [4]
Marc Davis is a retired American track and field athlete, who mainly competed in distance races like the men's 3000 metres steeplechase and 5000 metres. His personal bests include running 3:54.30 for the mile, 8:14.26 in the steeplechase and 8:12.74 for 2 Miles.
Trevor Anthony Vincent, is a former Australian long-distance runner, specialising in the 3000 metres steeplechase. In 1962 he competed for his native country at the Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia, winning the gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase event, setting an inaugural Commonwealth Games record and breaking his own Australian record. He also competed at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan in the 3000 metres steeplechase event.
Genevieve Gregson is an Australian athletics competitor who specialized in the 3000 metre steeplechase but for the 2024 Olympics qualified for and was selected to run for Australia in the marathon. She qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and ran 9:26.11 in her Women's 3000m steeplechase heat to qualify for the final. Unfortunately she fell, rupturing her Achilles tendon, and was unable to complete the race.
Soufiane El Bakkali is a Moroccan runner specializing in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion, having previously finished fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. At the World Athletics Championships, El Bakkali won two gold medals, winning his first in 2022 and later in 2023, He won silver in 2017 and bronze in 2019. He also placed third at the 2019 African Games and second at the 2018 African Championships.
