Bhanupriya (born Manga Bhanu; 15 January 1967) is an Indian actress and dancer. In a four decade old career, she has appeared in 155 feature films, predominantly in Telugu and Tamil, and a few in Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films. She has starred in a variety of roles, which garnered her three state Nandi Awards, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, two Filmfare Awards South and two Cinema Express Awards.

Early life

Bhanupriya was born on 15 January 1967 [1] in Rangampeta village near Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh in a Telugu-speaking family, to Pandu Babu and Ragamali. She was named Mangabhanu after birth. [2] [3] Her family later moved to Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She has an elder brother Gopikrishana and a younger sister Shantipriya, who has also been a film actress since the 1990s. [4] [5]

Career

She was one of the top mainstream actresses for more than a decade from 1983 to 1995. She was originally chosen to be the lead actress for Thooral Ninnu Pochchu (1982) after Bhagyaraj spotted her at a dance school, but after the photoshoot he felt she looked too young for this role and she was replaced by Sulakshana thus made her acting debut with the Tamil film Mella Pesungal (1983). [6] She then appeared in the Telugu hit Sitaara , which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu for that year. She then played an ornithologist in the 1985 mystery film Anveshana . In 1986, she made her Hindi film debut with Dosti Dushmani . [7] In 1988, she appeared in Swarnakamalam , which was screened at the Indian panorama section of the 1988 International Film Festival of India [8] and the Ann Arbor Film Festival. [9] Bhanupriya received the Indian Express Award for Best Actress, [10] the Nandi Award for Best Actress, and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu for her performance in the film. [11] [12] In 1989 and 1991, her performances in the Tamil hits Aararo Aariraro, and Azhagan brought her the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prizes, respectively. [13] She received the JFW Divas of South India Award for her contribution to South Indian cinema, the Gemini TV Puraskaram for lifetime achievement in television and various other honours. [4] [5]

Personal life

Bhanupriya married Adarsh Kaushal, a digital graphics engineer, at the Sri Venkateswara temple in Malibu, California, on 14 June 1998. The couple has a daughter, Abhinaya, born in 2002. [4] [5] Bhanupriya returned to India, and resumed her acting career. She lives in Chennai with her daughter. [14] Kaushal died in 2018 after suffering a cardiac arrest. [15]

<i>Swarnakamalam</i> 1988 Indian film

Swarnakamalam is a 1988 Indian Telugu-language dance film written and directed by K. Viswanath. The film stars Venkatesh and Bhanupriya in the lead, while Sharon Lowen appears in a special role. The film is about a danseuse daughter of a noted Kuchipudi exponent, wooed by a painter of banners and hoardings, who uses her as a model. The choreography is helmed by Kelucharan Mohapatra, and Sharon Lowen with soundtrack by Ilaiyaraaja. The song sequences were extensively shot at the Valley of Flowers National Park, the Nanda Devi National Park, the Shanti Stupa and Bhringesvara Siva Temple at Dhauli; and other locations in Visakhapatnam.

Sujatha was an Indian actress who performed and starred in a variety of unique characters in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu films- in addition to few in Kannada and Hindi languages as well. The actress was best known for restraint and subtlety in portrayal of varied emotions. After starring in numerous Malayalam films in her mother-tongue, Sujatha later got introduced to the Tamil film industry by veteran director K. Balachander and producer P.R. Govindarajan as a protagonist in her first Tamil film, Aval Oru Thodar Kathai (1974). It was a critically acclaimed film and launched the actress's first commecrical breakthrough in her acting career. Whereas, her first Telugu picture happened to be a Telugu/Tamil bilingual titled as Guppedu Manasu (1979) in Telugu and was simultaneously shot as Nool Veli in Tamil of the same year. She died of a cardiac arrest on 6 April 2011 in Chennai.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Saranya Ponvannan</span> Indian actress

Saranya Ponvannan is an Indian actress who predominantly appears in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam and a few Kannada language films. She also acted in one Hindi movie Chup: Revenge of the Artist in 2022. Saranya made her acting debut in a lead role in Mani Ratnam's Nayakan (1987) and went on to play lead roles from 1987 to 1996. Following an eight-year sabbatical, she returned to films in 2003 as a character actor roles. In her career spanning around over 25 years she had won a number of accolades including one National Film Award, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and five Filmfare Award South.

The 57th Filmfare Awards South ceremony honoring the winners and nominees of the best of South Indian cinema in 2009 was held on 7 August 2010 in Chennai, India.

<i>Aararo Aariraro</i> 1989 Indian film

Aararo Aariraro is a 1989 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film, written and directed by K. Bhagyaraj, starring himself and Bhanupriya. It was released on 27 November 1989. Bhanupriya won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize, Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil and the Cinema Express Award for Best Actress – Tamil. The film was remade in Kannada as Thooguve Krishnana (1994).
