Bicol University (Bikol: Unibersidad nin Bikol; Filipino : Unibersidad ng Bikol), also referred to by its acronym (BU or Bicol U), is a regional state, research and coeducational higher education institution in Legazpi City, Albay, Philippines, with external campuses scattered throughout the provinces of Albay and Sorsogon. BU is an ISO 9001:2008 certified public university. [4]
The university is partly subsidized by the Philippine government. Students of the university and its graduates are referred to as "Mga Iskolar ng Bayan" ("Scholars of the Nation") but they are commonly called as Bueños. Students who wish to study in the university must pass the Bicol University College Entrance Test (BUCET). [5] During the COVID-19 pandemic, the university implemented the Bicol University College Entrance Scoring System (BUCESS) for its admission of undergraduate students for academic years 2021-2022 and 2022–2023. The Bicol University [7] [8] [9] was founded on June 21, 1969, by virtue of Republic Act 5521 [10] and was formally organized on September 22, 1970. It evolved out of six educational institutions integrated to form the first state university in the Bicol Region (Region V):
These public schools and colleges, now part of Bicol University, had served the people of the region for more than half a century prior to their forming Bicol University.

The governance of the university is vested in the Board of Regents, abbreviated as BOR. The board, with its 12 members, is the highest decision-making body of the university.
The chairperson or its designated commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) serves as the board's chairperson while the president of the Bicol University is the vice-chairperson. The chairpersons of the Committees of Higher Education of the Senate and the House of Representatives are also members of the Board of Regents which are concurrent with their functions as committee chairpersons.
The students of the Bicol University are represented by a student regent, who is also the chair of the University Student Council. The faculty regent is nominated by the faculty members of the whole university. Alumni are represented by the president of the BU Alumni Association.

Located in Enlisted Men's Barrio (EM Barrio), Barangay 1 also in Legazpi City, the campus [30] hosts the College of Engineering (BUCENG), [31] College of Industrial Technology (BUCIT) [32] and the Institute of Design and Architecture (BUIDeA). [33]
Located in Sagpon, Daraga, Albay, and is less than a kilometer from the main campus, the campus consists of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (BUCSSP) and College of Business, Economics and Management (BUCBEM). This campus was formerly called College of Arts and Science (BUCAS).

Located along the Pan-Philippine Highway in the town of Guinobatan, Albay, [38] formerly known as Guinobatan Farm School in 1912; Guinobatan Rural High School in 1927; Roxas Memorial Agricultural School in 1950; Bicol University College of Agriculture (BUCA) in 1969 through RA 5521; with the offering of Bachelor of Science in Forestry starting in 1991, is now known as Bicol University College of Agriculture and Forestry (BUCAF). Located in Centro Occidental, Polangui, Albay, [41] this was formerly known as the School for Philippine Craftsmen [42] and offered vocational courses. It was integrated into Bicol University, [43] through R.A. 7722, R.A. 8292 & R.A. 8769, on December 14, 2000, and renamed as Bicol University Polangui Campus. From the five courses offered in 2000, it now offers fifteen courses including BS in Nursing, BS in Computer Engineering and BS in Electronics and Communications Engineering.
Located in Gubat, Sorsogon, the only campus outside of Albay, [44] [45] this campus offers bachelor's degrees in Agricultural Technology, Secondary and Elementary Education, Fisheries, Food Technology, Entrepreneurship, Peace and Security Studies and Computer Science are offered in this campus.
The University Library System is for the use of students and other researchers. It has a collection of books in different fields of knowledge and all the published undergraduate and graduate research. It is composed of ten sub-libraries, namely:
It organizes and facilitates the conduct of intercollegiate sports and the university's participation in sports events. It runs wellness and fitness programs. Some of its facilities for athletics include a soccer field, olympic-sized swimming pool, a rubberized track oval, and a grandstand. [46]

Legazpi, officially the City of Legazpi, is a 1st class component city and capital of the province of Albay, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 209,533. Legazpi is the regional center and largest city of the Bicol Region, in terms of population. It is the region's center of tourism, education, health services, commerce and transportation in the Bicol Region.
Tabaco, officially the City of Tabaco, is a 4th class component city in the province of Albay, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 140,961 people.

Polangui, officially the Municipality of Polangui, is a 1st class municipality in the province of Albay, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 89,176 people.
The Divine Word College of Legazpi (DWCL) is a private Catholic coeducational basic and higher education institution run by the Philippine Central Province of the Society of the Divine Word in Legazpi, Albay, Philippines. It was founded by Rev. Fr. Juan Carullo, a retired Army Chaplain in 1947.
The University of Santo Tomas–Legazpi, also referred to by its acronym UST–Legazpi or USTL, is a private, Catholic basic and higher education institution run and owned by the Philippine Dominican Province of the Order of Preachers (OP) in Legazpi City, Philippines. It was founded by Buenaventura de Erquiaga in 1948 and named Legazpi Junior Colleges.

The Mayon Volcano Natural Park is a protected area of the Philippines located in the Bicol Region on southeast Luzon Island, the largest island of the country. The Natural park covers an area of 5,775.7 hectares, which includes its centerpiece Mayon Volcano, the most active volcano in the Philippines, and its adjacent surroundings. The volcano is also renowned for having an almost perfect cone. First protected as a National Park in 1938, it was reclassified as a Natural Park in the year 2000.
Legazpi station is the current railway terminus of the South Main Line located in Albay, Philippines. It is also the terminus for the Legaspi-Tabaco branch line. The station is currently used for the Bicol Commuter rail.
Polangui General Comprehensive High School (PGCHS) is the flagship secondary school of the municipality of Polangui in the province of Albay. It has an average population of 4,000 students. PGCHS has seven present curricula. It is located along the Buhi-Polangui Road at Purok Earth, Centro Occidental, Polangui, Albay; having a total service area of 48,708 square meters. It is 39.1 kilometers away from the Department of Education (DepEd) Albay Division Office.
The 2016 Palarong Pambansa was the 59th edition of the annual multi-sporting event for Filipino student-athletes. Athletic associations from the country's 18 regions were competed in different sporting events and discipline. The games were held at the Bicol University Sports Complex, in Albay Province, from April 10–16, 2016.
The Bikol languages or Bicolano languages are a group of Central Philippine languages spoken mostly in the Bicol Peninsula in the southeastern part of Luzon, the neighboring island-province of Catanduanes, and the island of Burias in Masbate.

Rodel Masigan Batocabe was a Filipino lawyer, politician, and member of the Ako Bicol Political Party (AKB). Batocabe served in the House of Representatives of the Philippines for three terms from 2010 until his murder in office on December 22, 2018, at a gift-giving event for senior citizens in the village of Burgos, Daraga municipality, Albay. Batocabe was first elected to House of Representatives of the Philippines in 2010, an office he held until his death and was the first sitting member of the House of Representatives to be killed during the administration of Rodrigo Duterte, but he was the 21st Filipino official to be murdered since Duterte's tenure began in 2016. Batocabe was a political ally of President Duterte.
Albay local elections were held on May 13, 2019, as part of the 2019 Philippine general election. Voters selected their candidates of choice for all local positions: municipal or city mayor, vice mayor and councilors, as well as members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, the vice-governor, governor and representatives for the three districts of Albay in the House of Representatives. These elections were held following the first-past-the-post voting system, in which the candidate with the highest number of votes is elected.
The PNR South Main Line is one of the two trunk lines that form the Philippine National Railways' network in the island of Luzon, Philippines. It was opened in stages between 1916 and 1938 by the Manila Railroad. Services peaked in the 1940s until the late 1960s, when the system started to decline. Since 1988, it was the only functioning inter-city rail after its counterpart to the north, the North Main Line, was closed. The intercity section of the line in Laguna, Quezon and the Bicol Region was then closed and reopened repeatedly between 2004 and 2014 due to a combination of declining ridership and was closed since then. Currently, only a little more than half of line is operational PNR Metro Commuter Line between Tutuban station and Laguna, Inter-Provincial Commuter from San Pedro to Lucena and the Bicol Commuter regional rail service between Sipocot, Naga Camarines Sur and Legazpi Albay.
