Bicol University (Bikol: Unibersidad nin Bikol; Filipino : Unibersidad ng Bikol), also referred to by its acronym (BU or Bicol U), is a regional state, research and coeducational higher education institution in Legazpi City, Albay, Philippines, with external campuses scattered throughout the provinces of Albay and Sorsogon. BU is an ISO 9001:2008 certified public university. [4]
The university is partly subsidized by the Philippine government. Students of the university and its graduates are referred to as "Mga Iskolar ng Bayan" ("Scholars of the Nation") but they are commonly called as Bueños. Students who wish to study in the university must pass the Bicol University College Entrance Test (BUCET). [5] During the COVID-19 pandemic, the university implemented the Bicol University College Entrance Scoring System (BUCESS) for its admission of undergraduate students for academic years 2021-2022 and 2022–2023. The Bicol University [7] [8] [9] was founded on June 21, 1969, by virtue of Republic Act 5521 [10] and was formally organized on September 22, 1970. It evolved out of six educational institutions integrated to form the first state university in the Bicol Region (Region V):
These public schools and colleges, now part of Bicol University, had served the people of the region for more than half a century prior to their forming Bicol University.

The governance of the university is vested in the Board of Regents, abbreviated as BOR. The board, with its 12 members, is the highest decision-making body of the university.
The chairperson or its designated commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) serves as the board's chairperson while the president of the Bicol University is the vice-chairperson. The chairpersons of the Committees of Higher Education of the Senate and the House of Representatives are also members of the Board of Regents which are concurrent with their functions as committee chairpersons.
The students of the Bicol University are represented by a student regent, who is also the chair of the University Student Council. The faculty regent is nominated by the faculty members of the whole university. Alumni are represented by the president of the BU Alumni Association.

BU Guinobatan Campus (BUGbtn) formely BUCAF is located along the Pan-Philippine Highway in the town of Guinobatan, Albay, [38] formerly known as Guinobatan Farm School in 1912; Guinobatan Rural High School in 1927; Roxas Memorial Agricultural School in 1950; Bicol University College of Agriculture (BUCA) in 1969 through RA 5521; with the offering of Bachelor of Science in Forestry starting in 1991, is known as Bicol University College of Agriculture and Forestry (BUCAF). [39] In 2022, the LGU Guinobatan passed an ordinance in renaming the campus to BU Guinobatan. BUCAF is a member of Philippine Agroforestry Education and Research Network (PAFERN) [40]

19. BU Polangui Campus (BUPC) is located in Centro Occidental, Polangui, Albay, [41] this was formerly known as the School for Philippine Craftsmen [42] and offered vocational courses. It was integrated into Bicol University, [43] through R.A. 7722, R.A. 8292 & R.A. 8769, on December 14, 2000, and renamed as Bicol University Polangui Campus. It came into existence through Republic Act No. 11973 or the law to establish the Bicol University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ligao City. The University Library System is for the use of students and other researchers. It has a collection of books in different fields of knowledge and all the published undergraduate and graduate research. It is composed of ten sub-libraries, namely:
It organizes and facilitates the conduct of intercollegiate sports and the university's participation in sports events. It runs wellness and fitness programs. Some of its facilities for athletics include a soccer field, olympic-sized swimming pool, a rubberized track oval, and a grandstand. [46]

Albay, officially the Province of Albay, is a province in the Bicol Region of the Philippines, mostly on the southeastern part of the island of Luzon. Its capital is the city of Legazpi, the regional center of the whole Bicol Region, which is located in the southern foothill of Mayon Volcano.
Sorsogon, officially the Province of Sorsogon, is a province in the Philippines located in the Bicol Region. It is the southernmost province in the island of Luzon and is subdivided into fourteen municipalities (towns) and one city. Its capital is Sorsogon City and borders the province of Albay to the north.
Legazpi, officially the City of Legazpi, is a component city and capital of the province of Albay, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 209,533. Legazpi is the regional center and largest city of the Bicol Region and in Albay, in terms of population. It is the region's center of tourism, education, health services, commerce and transportation in the Bicol Region. The city is applying for a Highly Urbanized City (HUC).
Tabaco, officially the City of Tabaco, is a component city in the province of Albay, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 140,961 people.
Guinobatan, officially the Municipality of Guinobatan, is a municipality in the province of Albay, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 85,786 people.
Daraga, officially the Municipality of Daraga, is a municipality in the province of Albay, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 133,893.
Polangui, officially the Municipality of Polangui, is a municipality in the province of Albay, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 89,176 people.
Ligao, officially the City of Ligao, is a component city in the province of Albay, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 118,096 people. Most of the city's economy came from agriculture sector.
Bicol International Airport, also referred by some sources as Southern Luzon International Airport, is an airport serving the vicinity of Legazpi, the capital city of Albay and the regional center of Bicol Region, in the Philippines. Dubbed as the Philippines' "Most Scenic Gateway", the airport is located in Daraga, an adjacent municipality of Legazpi. The ₱4.7 billion project is on a 200-hectare (490-acre) plateau 15 kilometers (9.3 mi) from Mayon Volcano. It replaced the old Legazpi Airport, which is only 2 to 3 kilometers from the BIA.
The Divine Word College of Legazpi (DWCL) is a private Catholic coeducational basic and higher education institution run by the Philippine Central Province of the Society of the Divine Word in Legazpi, Albay, Philippines. It was founded by Rev. Fr. Juan Carullo, a retired Army Chaplain in 1947.
The University of Santo Tomas–Legazpi, also referred to by its acronym UST–Legazpi or USTL, is a private, Catholic basic and higher education institution, and a part of the University of Santo Tomas System that is run and owned by the Philippine Dominican Province of the Order of Preachers (OP). It was founded by Buenaventura de Erquiaga in 1948 and named Legazpi Junior Colleges.
Zamora Memorial College is a private school in Bacacay, Albay, Philippines, that offers secondary and tertiary education. Founded in 1948 by Crispin Bermas Vergara, Sr., its name commemorates Friar Juan Zamora of Tayabas, Quezon, the founder of the first collegiate school in Albay.

The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, or simply referred to by its acronym CBSUA, is a state university in the province of Camarines Sur, Philippines, and is the regional center for higher learning in agriculture in the Bicol Region.
The 2016 Palarong Pambansa was the 59th edition of the annual multi-sporting event for Filipino student-athletes. Athletic associations from the country's 18 regions were competed in different sporting events and discipline. The games were held at the Bicol University Sports Complex, in Albay Province, from April 10–16, 2016.

Rodel Masigan Batocabe was a Filipino lawyer, politician, and member of the Ako Bicol Political Party (AKB). Batocabe served in the House of Representatives of the Philippines for three terms from 2010 until his murder in office on December 22, 2018, at a gift-giving event for senior citizens in the village of Burgos, Daraga municipality, Albay. Batocabe was first elected to House of Representatives of the Philippines in 2010, an office he held until his death and was the first sitting member of the House of Representatives to be killed during the administration of Rodrigo Duterte, but he was the 21st Filipino official to be murdered since Duterte's tenure began in 2016. Batocabe was a political ally of President Duterte.
