Billboard Philippines Women in Music is an annual event by Billboard Philippines . The Philippine edition of Billboard 's Woman of the Year event, it would "honor the most influential women in Filipino music," according to the magazine. Like its American counterpart, the main award is titled Woman of the Year. The inaugural ceremony was held on March 22, 2024, with Sarah Geronimo as the Woman of the Year awardee. [1]

History

After the first edition of the Billboard Women in Music in 2007, the awards were given to artists from every nationality who gained achievements in the magazine's charts. In 2023 the publication launched the first international award outside the United States, the Billboard Latin Women in Music, specifically for Latin music. [2] In 2024 Billboard Women in Music introduced the Global Force Award, given to "singers, songwriters, instrumentalists and producers making groundbreaking contributions to the music industry" selected by Billboard publication around the world, [3] including Sarah Geronimo selected by Billboard Philippines. [4] [5] Since that Billboard extended the Women in Music ceremony to the individual international territories in which the magazine is published, including Billboard Philippines. [6] [7]

Icon Award

The Icon award honors a Filipina artist "whose musical work has led them to attain exceptional achievements as well as aided them in making momentous contributions within the music industry and towards the essence of Filipino artistry itself." It was first awarded to Pilita Corrales in 2024. [8] [9]

Powerhouse Award

The Powerhouse award honors a Filipina artist "whose music has undisputedly shown utmost superiority when it comes to factors such as streamings, CD and ticket sales, as well as extensive radio play in the Philippines." Regine Velasquez was the first honoree in 2024. [8] [11]

Hitmaker Award

First awarded to Moira dela Torre in 2024, the Hitmaker award is handed to "a Filipina artist whose musical work has caused significant changes and wielded influence on Filipino culture." [8]

Rising Star Award

The Hitmaker award honors "those whose work and artistry has aided them in attaining an undeniable rise in the local music scene." Girl group BINI was the first recipient of the award in 2024. [13]

Rule Breaker Award

According to Billboard Philippines, the Rule Breaker award is bestowed to "a Filipina artist who has consistently torn down barriers alongside defying typical expectations within the music industry; demonstrating a strong resolve to impart a powerful message to the younger generation." Ena Mori received the inaugural award in 2024. [8]

Fan-voted awards

One of the key differences of Billboard Philippines Women in Music from its American counterpart is the presence of two fan-voted awards. The People's Choice Award is given to an artist chosen by the readers, while the Listeners' Choice Award is given to a song by a Filipina artist, also voted by readers.

Regina Encarnacion Ansong Velasquez is a Filipino singer and actress. She is considered one of the most influential figures in Philippine popular culture and is known for her vocal range and belting technique. She had unorthodox voice training during her childhood, where she was immersed neck-deep in the sea. Velasquez rose to prominence after winning the television talent show Ang Bagong Kampeon in 1984 and the Asia Pacific Singing Contest in 1989. Under the name Chona, she signed a recording contract with OctoArts International in 1986 and released the single "Love Me Again", which was commercially unsuccessful. The following year, she adopted the stage name Regine Velasquez for her debut studio album, Regine (1987), under the guidance of Viva Records executive Vic del Rosario and producer Ronnie Henares. She explored Manila sound and kundiman genres on her second and third studio albums, Nineteen 90 (1990) and Tagala Talaga (1991).

The Myx Music Awards, currently known as the Myx Awards, are accolades presented by the cable channel Myx to honor the biggest hitmakers in the Philippines. The awards ceremony is held annually and occurs most commonly in March, and broadcast delayed on Myx. A popular song in the Philippines, it has been covered by various Filipino artists, including Sarah Geronimo in 2014, whose version was used as the theme song for the film of the same title, where Geronimo co-starred.
