Billboard Women in Music is an annual event held by Billboard . Its main award is titled Woman of the Year, established to recognize "women in the music industry who have made significant contributions to the business and who, through their work and continued success, inspire generations of women to take on increasing responsibilities within the field", according to the magazine. [1]

Contents

Women in music include women as composers, songwriters, instrumental performers, singers, conductors, music scholars, music educators, music critics/music journalists, and in other musical professions. A songwriter is an individual who writes the lyrics, melodies and chord progressions for songs, typically for a popular music genre such as pop, rock, or country music. A songwriter can also be called a composer, although the latter term tends to be mainly used for individuals from the classical music genre.

Since 2023 Billboard established the first Billboard Latin Women in Music, focusing exclusively on female artists of Latin music. [2] Since 2024, it has expanded the award ceremony to the individual international territories in which the magazine is published. [3] [4] [5]

Woman of the Year Award

In 2007, Reba McEntire was honored with the Billboard's first Woman of the Year Award because of "her success as a recording artist, contributions to the business, and leadership in embracing the changing music business." [1] Every year since then, Billboard has honored a female artist with the award. Taylor Swift is the first and only woman to be honored more than once. Cardi B became the first rapper to receive the accolade. [6] [7] The most recent winner is Karol G who became the first Latin artist to win this award. [8]

Woman of the Decade Award

Although the awards began in 2007, in 2009 Billboard announced the Artists of Decade, ranking Beyoncé as Billboard’s Top Female Artist of the 2000s, without giving a formal award to the singer. [9] At the end of the 2010s, Billboard honored Taylor Swift with the first-ever Woman of the Decade Award, for being "one of the most accomplished musical artists of all time over the course of the 2010s". [10]

Rising Star Award

In 2008, Colbie Caillat was honored with Billboard's first Rising Star award because of "her ascent in the pop charts and the repercussion that her music caused." Every year since then, Billboard has honored a female artist with the award.

Triple Threat Award

In 2010, Lea Michele was honored with Billboard's First-Ever Triple Threat Award because of her "excellence in performance across acting, singing and dancing." [19]

Rulebreaker Award

The Rulebreaker Award recognizes female artists who use their music and platform to defy traditional industry expectations and advance a powerful message for young people. [16] Demi Lovato was the first to be honored with the award in 2015. [note 1]

Trailblazer Award

The Trailblazer award is awarded to a female artist who acts as a music industry pioneer by using her platform to spotlight unheard voices and break ground for future generations of performers. [21] Hayley Williams was the first to be honored for the award in 2014.

Chart-Topper Award

Icon Award

The Icon Award is given to a female artist of extraordinary accomplishment, who has made historic contributions to the industry and artistry.

Impact Award

The Impact Award was given for the first time to Solange Knowles because she "uses her voice to empower and develop new leaders of tomorrow through their on-air persona, platform, and philanthropic efforts to inspire social change across the masses". [35]

Legend Award

The Legend Award was given for the first time to Loretta Lynn as posthumous award for her " historic contributions to the industry and artistry of American music, which has established her among the highest class of performers". [40]

Breakthrough Artist

Hitmaker Award

The Hitmaker Award is given to the songwriter whose compositions have significantly impacted culture. [45]

Innovator Award

The Innovator Award recognizes female artists who challenge musical convention, create positive change and contribute new ideas both in and outside of their creative work. [16]

Powerhouse Award

The Powerhouse Award is given to the act whose music dominated in their respected year through streaming, sales, and radio. [48]

Game Changer Award

The Game Changer Award was given for the first time to Nicki Minaj after becoming the first woman to notch 100 appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Visionary Award

Lana Del Rey was awarded with the first visionary award in Billboard's history.

Global Force Award

The Global Force Award was given to "singers, songwriters, instrumentalists and producers making groundbreaking contributions to the music industry" selected by Billboard publication around the world. [53]

Dance-pop is a subgenre of pop music that originated in the late 1970s to early 1980s. It is generally uptempo music intended for nightclubs with the intention of being danceable but also suitable for contemporary hit radio. Developing from a combination of dance and pop with influences of disco, post-disco and synth-pop, it is generally characterised by strong beats with easy, uncomplicated song structures which are generally more similar to pop music than the more free-form dance genre, with an emphasis on melody as well as catchy tunes. The genre, on the whole, tends to be producer-driven, despite some notable exceptions.

The Brit Award for International Female Solo Artist is an award given by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), an organisation which represents record companies and artists in the United Kingdom. The winners and nominees are determined by the Brit Awards voting academy with over one-thousand members, which comprise record labels, publishers, managers, agents, media, and previous winners and nominees.

Victoria Monét McCants is an American singer and songwriter. First gaining recognition for her songwriting work, Monét pursued a recording career with the release of a series of extended plays (EPs); her fifth, Jaguar (2020) was met with critical acclaim. Her debut studio album, Jaguar II (2023) became her commercial breakthrough and was supported by the hit single, "On My Mama", which peaked within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Record of the Year. The nomination was among seven she received at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, from which she won Best New Artist, Best R&B Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

The iHeartRadio Music Award for Best Music Video is one of the awards handed out at the yearly iHeartRadio Music Awards. It was first awarded in 2017 and presented to Fifth Harmony for their song "Work From Home". Cardi B is the most nominated artist in this category, with a total of six nominations. BTS are the most awarded artist with four wins, all of which were done consecutively.

In 2023, it was discontinued and replaced by the all-gender category Artist of the Year. Swift is the most awarded artist in this category, with a total of two wins. Swift and Ariana Grande are the most nominated artists in this category, with a total of five nominations each.

<i>Disco</i> (Kylie Minogue album) 2020 studio album by Kylie Minogue

Disco is the fifteenth studio album by Australian singer Kylie Minogue. BMG Rights Management and Minogue's company Darenote released it on 6 November 2020 in both digital and physical formats. After finishing her campaign with her previous album Golden (2018), Minogue was inspired by a Studio 54-esque section on her Golden Tour to create a disco-themed album. Early sessions began in 2019-2020, but were temporarily halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and widespread lockdowns. As a result, Minogue continued to work on the album remotely from London, using GarageBand and Logic Pro for the first time.

The MTV Video Music Award for Song of the Year is one of the biggest awards given at the annual MTV Video Music Awards. It was first introduced at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Real Groove</span> 2020 single by Kylie Minogue and Dua Lipa

"Real Groove" is a song by Australian singer Kylie Minogue from her fifteenth studio album, Disco (2020). The song was written by Minogue, Teemu Brunila, Nico Stadi and Alida Garpestad Peck, with a sense of optimism for days ahead during the COVID-19 pandemic. Brunila and Stadi also handled the production. It is a disco-pop song with house and R&B elements and features vocoders, a funk bass and post-disco synths. The lyrics see Minogue attempting to win an ex back. A new version, a duet with English-Albanian singer Dua Lipa entitled "Studio 2054 remix", was released on 31 December 2020 as the album's third single. The remix added William Bowerman as a producer with additional instrumentation and Lipa incorporating layered vocals and new lyrics.
