Birchills power station and Walsall power station are a series of three coal-fired power stations in, or near, Walsall in the West Midlands, England.
The first electricity supply to Walsall began in the 1890s. In 1890 Walsall Corporation were granted a Provisional Order by the Board of Trade to give them legal powers to generate and supply electricity to Walsall. [1] The Corporation built a power station in Wolverhampton Street Walsall (52°35’10”N 01°59’33”W) [2] which began supplying electricity in 1895.
The plant at the station consisted coal-fired boilers supplying steam to Chandler compound engines coupled directly to Parker two-pole dynamos. [1] The initial capacity of the plant was 240 kW with a maximum load of 155 kW. New equipment was added and the ultimate generating capacity was 2.6 MW. [2]
In 1898 74,556 kWh of electricity was sold to 101 customers plus 21,820 kWh for public lighting. The sale of electricity produced an income for the corporation of £3,025 offset against generating costs of £804. [1] The station was closed in 1917 except for emergency use. [2]

The first power station on the Birchills site was built for Walsall Corporation. [1] Work began in 1914, and electricity was being generated by 1916, although the project was not officially completed until 1922.
In 1923 the electricity plant comprised 2 × 4 MW [3] and 1 × 5 MW steam turbines driven by 100,000 lb/hr (12.60 kg/s) of steam. [4] Electricity was available to consumers as:
The generating capacity by 1930 was 28 MW. [2]
Cooling water was supplied by a pumping station on the Anson Branch canal, equipped with two Mather and Platt pumps capable of delivering 10.6 million gallons (48 Megalitres) per day. Spent water was discharged into the Wyrley and Essington Canal.
After Walsall power station was commissioned in 1949 it provided steam to this station. [5]
In 1923 the station generated 13.17 GWh of electricity, some of this was used in the plant, the total amount sold was 10.22 GWh. The revenue from sales of current was £84,927, this gave a surplus of revenue over expenses of £40,522. [4]
Ownership of the station passed to the West Midlands Joint Electricity Authority in 1927, and then to the British Electricity Authority following nationalisation in 1948 and subsequently the Central Electricity Authority and the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB). [6] [7]

The power station closed in 1967. [2]
Walsall power station was sanctioned by the Electricity Commissioners in November 1944 to be owned and operated by the West Midlands Joint Electricity Authority. [5] Construction began in October 1946 on a 64 acre (25.9 ha) site at Birchills north of Walsall town centre and adjacent to the Walsall (Birchills) power station 1916–1967. During construction the British electricity supply industry was nationalised in 1948. The ownership of the incomplete Walsall power station was vested in the British Electricity Authority, and subsequently the Central Electricity Authority and the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB). 12 × Babcock & Wilcox 180,000 lb/h boilers operating at a pressure of 650 psi and 875 °F (22.7 kg/s, 44.8 bar and 468 °C). The boilers supplied steam to:
6 × British Thomson-Houston 34 MW, 2-cylinder, double flow, impulse reaction turbines 3,000 rpm coupled to 3-phase 50 Hz alternators operating at 33/36 kV
Diesel engine house-set comprising 2 × 2 MW engines.
Cooling facilities comprised 6 × concrete hyperbolic cooling towers (Mitchell Construction Company) each with a capacity of 1.6 million gallons per hour (2.02 m3/s), the total cooling capacity was 9.6 million gallons per hour (12.1 m3/s). The cooling system was designed to cool water by 12 °F (6.7 °C). Make up water was drawn from the adjacent canal. [5]
The first generating set was commissioned in July 1949; the second set in September 1949; the third in December 1949; the fourth in June 1950; the fifth in August 1954; and the final set in December 1954. [5] The final generating capability was 208 MW, and the output capacity was 195 MW. The diesel sets were commissioned in April 1955. [5] The station was officially opened on 30 September 1949 and was one of the largest and high output power plants. The station burned 'slack' coal, which consisted of fragments of coal and coal dust. Coal was delivered by road, rail and canal.

Walsall was an electricity supply district covering 37 square miles (96 km2) and a population of 170,000 (1959). [5] It encompassed the County Borough of Walsall, the districts of Aldridge and Brownhill (part) and part of Cannock district. The number of consumers and electricity sold was: [5]

Walsall power station was decommissioned on 1 March 1982 [13] after 33 years in use, and the stub of railway serving it west of Ryecroft Junction, was closed at the same time. The power station was closed as it was no longer deemed to be efficient, when much newer coal power stations built later in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s with six or eight cooling towers can generate up to ten times more electricity as technology improves with bigger generators becoming more apparent on less coal consumption i.e. 2000 MW+ than Birchills could.
It was disused for nearly five years, finally being demolished in March 1987.
The substation it fed power to, also in Birchills is still in existence today, but is now fed from Rugeley 'B' station.[ citation needed ]
Wilford power station was a coal-fired electricity generating station situated on the north bank of the River Trent, at Nottingham in the East Midlands.
West Ham Power Station was a coal-fired power station on Bow Creek at Canning Town, in east London. It was often referred to informally as Canning Town Power Station.
Barking Power Station refers to a series of power stations at various sites within the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham in east London. The original power station site, of the coal-fired A, B and C stations, was at River Road, Creekmouth, on the north bank of the River Thames. These stations were decommissioned by 1981 and were subsequently demolished. The later gas-fired power station was built further down the Thames near Dagenham Dock in the early 1990s. The site of the former power stations is being redeveloped as Barking Riverside.
Rotherham power station was a coal-fired power station sited close to the centre of Rotherham in South Yorkshire.
Sunderland Power Station was a coal-fired power station situated on the bank of the River Wear, in the city centre of Sunderland, in Tyne and Wear, North East England. The station was initially built in 1901 by the Sunderland Corporation and had several extensions added.
Doncaster Power Station refers to two coal-fired electricity generating stations situated in the centre of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. Doncaster A provided electricity to the town from 1900 to 1958, and the B station from 1953 to 1983.
Taylors Lane Power Station is situated in Willesden, north-west London. The first power station on the site, known as Willesden power station, was coal-fired and operated from 1904 to 1972 and was subsequently demolished. Watford Power Station was a coal-fired power station situated in Watford's Riverside area. The station was built by the Watford Corporation Electricity Department starting with the installation of cables in 1899 with completion around 1900, near the banks of the River Colne. A gas turbine power station was commissioned in 1980.
Southampton Power Station was a coal fired power station built by Southampton Corporation that operated between 1904 and 1977.
Bradford Power Station was an electricity generating site located on Valley Road in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. The primary source of fuel was coal which was railed into the sidings adjacent to the Bradford Forster Square to Shipley railway line. The plant operated for 79 years and had cooling towers constructed from wood and was noted for its 300-foot (91 m) chimney that was supposed to vent smoke away from the valley floor in Bradford Dale that the power station was located on.
Ribble Power Station was a coal-fired electricity generating station on the River Ribble in Penwortham near Preston, Lancashire, England. The station was built by the Corporation of Preston to replace a small privately-run generating station in the town. It supplied electricity to Preston and the surrounding area from 1923 until 1976. The station was expanded with new equipment in 1943–47 which remained in operation until the power station was closed in 1976 and was subsequently demolished.
Blackburn power stations are a series of electricity generating stations that have provided electric power to the town of Blackburn and the wider area from 1895 to the present. The first station in Jubilee Street, Blackburn began operating in 1895. A new larger station known as Blackburn East or Whitebirk power station was commissioned in 1921 and was rebuilt in stages over the period 1942 to 1955. Whitebirk station closed in 1976. The 60 MW Blackburn Mill Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station has generated electricity since 2002. The Blackburn energy from waste (EfW) plant is currently (2020) being planned.
Fleetwood power stations were two generating stations that supplied electricity to the town of Fleetwood, England and the surrounding area from 1900 to 1981. The first station was owned by the Fleetwood and District Electric Light and Power Syndicate and later by Fleetwood Urban District Council. The second station was owned and operated by the state following the nationalisation of the British electricity supply industry in 1948; this power station was decommissioned in October 1981.
Wolverhampton power station, also known as Commercial Road power station, supplied electricity to the Borough of Wolverhampton, England and the surrounding area from 1895 to 1976. It was redeveloped in several stages to meet growing demand for electricity: including the addition of new plant in 1902 to 1908, 1925 and 1942. The power station was initially owned and operated by Wolverhampton Corporation, but was transferred to the West Midlands Joint Electricity Authority in 1928. The British Electricity Authority assumed ownership at nationalisation in 1948. Wolverhampton power station was decommissioned in 1976.
Nechells power stations refers to the three coal-fired electricity generating stations that supplied electricity to Birmingham and the surrounding area from 1915 to 1982.
