Birhanu Balew (born 27 February 1996) is an Ethiopian-born long-distance runner representing Bahrain. He reached the final of the 5000 m event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. [1] [3]
Birhanu started competing internationally in 2015.
In 2016 Birhanu competed in his first Olympic Games at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. He placed 9th in the men's 5000m Final clocking a time of 13:09.26. The race was won by Great Britain's Mo Farah in 13:03.30. [4]
Birhanu's first race of 2017 came on 17 January at the Kuwait City Half Marathon, where he won in a personal best time of 1:01:45. On 26 March, Birhanu represented Bahrain at the 2017 World Cross Country Championships in Kampala, Uganda. In the Senior race Birhanu placed 27th. On 25 and 26 April Birhanu won both the 10000m and 5000m at the Doha EMIR Cup in 31:16.51 and 13:52.39 respectively. On 5 May Birhanu competed in his first Diamond League Meeting of the season running 7:52.98 to place 14th in Doha, Qatar. Birhanu then returned to the roads to race the Okpekpe Road Race 10 km in Nigeria, placing 10th in 31:15. Birhanu then won three 5000m races in a Europe before going to London to compete in the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. In London Birhanu qualified to the final of the 5000m, and finished 12th in a time of 13:43.25; the race was won by Ethiopia's Muktar Edris. Birhanu won two more 5000m before his final competition of the year at the Sao Paulo Corrida de Sao Silvestre 15 km in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In 2018 Birhanu represented his country at the 2018 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, United Kingdom over 3000m. After qualifying to the final, Birhanu placed 10th in 8:18.89. Birhanu won a 5000m at the Shanghai Diamond League on 12 May in 13:09.64, and raced 2miles at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, USA on 25 May, placing 3rd in 8:21.54. On 5 July Birhanu won the 5000m at the Lausanne Diamond League Meeting. LRunning in third place into the final 200m, race leader Yomif Kejelcha fell at grabbed Selemon Barega's shorts, pulling him out of the inside lane, while Birhanu ran by to win in a time of 13:01.09. [5] On 30 August Birhanu represented his country at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. Birhanu won the 5000m in a time of 13:43.17.
Birhanu started his 2019 track season running indoors in France. On 2 February he won the 3000m at the Meeting National, Mondeville, and on 10 February he won the 2000m at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais. On 30 March Birhanu represented his country at the 2019 World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. Birhanu finished 19th in the senior men's race, which was won by Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei. Birhanu then won both the Arab Championships in Cairo, Egypt and the Asian Championships in Doha, Qatar over the 5000m. On 18 May Birhanu finished 4th at the Shanghai Diamond League 5000m running a time of 13:05.04. On 6 June Birhanu finished 4th at the Golden Gala-Pietro Minnea in Rome, clocking a personal best of 12:56.26; his first sub-13 minute 5000m clocking. Birhanu contested several Diamond League Meetings over the summer before his next global championships at the 2019 World Championships in Athletics in Doha, Qatar. On 30 September after qualifying for the final Birhanu placed 9th in 13:14.66; the race was won by Ethiopia's Muktar Edris. On 26 October Birhanu won the 5000m at the CISM Military World Games in Wuhan, China in a time of 14:08.99.
Birhanu only had a short 2020 track season racing indoors between 31 January and 21 February.

Birhanu began his 2021 track season by competing indoor over 3000m at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais; he finished 5th in an Asian Record of 7:34.58. [2] On 19 May Birhanu raced 10000m at the 60th Ostrava Golden Spike in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Birhanu finished 2nd in 27:07.49, and new personal best and national record. Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo won the race in 26:33.93 [6] Birhanu's race in Ostrava qualified him for the 10000m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games; he had already qualified for the 5000m. Birhanu's next race was at the Golden Gala-Pietra Minnea in Florence, Italy. Birhanu placed 7th in 12:57.71; [2] the race was won by Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Birhanu next raced at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway in the 3000m placing 4th in a personal best time of 7:33.05. [7]
At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Birhanu represented Bahrain in the 5000m and 10,000 metre competitions, but did not advance from the heat stage in the 5000m. Birhanu finished 17th in the 10,000m.
João Manuel Perera Junqueira is a retired Portuguese runner who specialized in the 3000 metres steeplechase.
Hellen Onsando Obiri is a Kenyan middle- and long-distance runner. She is the only woman to have won world titles in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country. Obiri is a two-time Olympic 5,000 metres silver medallist from the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she also placed fourth over the 10,000 metres. She is a two-time world champion after winning the 5,000 m in 2017 and again in 2019, when she set a new championship record. Obiri also took world bronze for the 1,500 metres in 2013 and silver in the 10,000 m in 2022. She won the 3,000 metres race at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, claimed silver in 2014, and placed fourth in 2018. She is the 2019 World Cross Country champion. Obiri triumphed in the 2023 Boston Marathon, her second marathon race. She places fifth in the half marathon on the world all-time list.
Muktar Edris is an Ethiopian professional long-distance runner who competes in track and cross country races.
Benjamin True is an American track and field and cross-country athlete, who competed for Dartmouth College and currently trains in Hanover, New Hampshire, while competing for Saucony and In the Arena. True was the top American at both the 2011 and 2013 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, as well as the 2011 USATF Road Running Circuit Champion, winning the 5 km and 10 km Road Championships along the way.
Ruth Jebet is a Kenyan-born long-distance runner and steeplechase specialist who competes internationally for Bahrain. She was the world record holder and was the 2016 Olympic gold medalist in the 3000 metres steeplechase, both achieved before turning 20. In 2018 she was suspended for testing positive for EPO.
The men's 5000 metres event at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place between 16 and 20 August at the Olympic Stadium. The winning margin was 0.60 seconds.
Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi is a Kenyan steeplechase runner. She won gold at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics and 2011 All-Africa Games, and bronze at the 2017 World Championships and 2012 African Championships in Athletics. At the Olympic Games, she won silver in Rio de Janeiro and bronze in Tokyo. As of August 2021, her personal best time of 9:00.01 ranks her 6th on the world all-time list.
Yomif Kejelcha Atomsa is an Ethiopian distance runner. He won the silver medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2019 World Athletics Championships and gold medals for the 3000 metres at the 2016 and 2018 World Indoor Championships. Kejelcha is the world indoor record holder for the mile with a time of 3:47.01, set on 3 March 2019 in Boston.
Madeline Heiner is an Australian runner. She placed fourth in the women's 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, she placed 7th in the 3000m steeplechase final and 10th in the 5000m final. She also represented Australia in the 2015 IAAF World Championships, 2017 IAAF World Championships and the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Aron Kifle Teklu is an Eritrean long-distance runner. He is the bronze medallist from the 2018 World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia. Aron is also the silver medallist in the 10000m from both the 2016 World U20 Championships and the 2019 All-African Games.
Jacob Kiplimo is a Ugandan long-distance runner who is the current world record holder in the half marathon. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Kiplimo won a bronze medal in the 10,000 m events. Kiplimo won gold medals in the 5000 m and 10,000 m events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and he won a silver and gold medal at the 2019 and 2023 World Cross Country Championships, respectively. He was also the winner of the 2020 World Half Marathon.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen is a Norwegian middle- and long-distance runner who is the current world record holder in the short track 1500 metres, the 2000 metres and the 3000 metres, and holds the world best time over the two mile distance. Ingebrigtsen is a two-time Olympic champion, having won gold medals in the 1500 m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, setting what was then an Olympic and European record, and in the 5000 metres at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He is also a two-time World champion, winning gold medals in the 5000 m in 2022 and 2023 and a six-time European champion, winning gold medals in the 1500 m and 5000 m in 2018, 2022, and 2024. In addition to the 1500 m, Ingebrigtsen holds European records in the mile, 3000 m, and 5000 m, and is one of only three men to run a sub-3:30 1500 m, sub-7:30 3000 m and a sub-12:50 5000 m.
Selemon Barega Shirtaga is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He won the gold medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, silver for the 5,000 metres at the 2019 World Championships in Doha and bronze in the 10,000 metres at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. Selemon is a two-time 3,000 metres World Indoor Championship medallist, taking silver in 2018, and a gold in 2022.
Stewart "Stewie" McSweyn is an Australian long-distance runner. He was a finalist in the men's 1500 metres in the Tokyo Olympics, and has also been a World Championships and Commonwealth Games finalist in the 3000 metres steeplechase, 5000 metres and 10,000 metres.
Telahun Haile Bekele is an Ethiopian male long-distance runner who specialises in the 5000 metres. His career has included victories at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, and at the Bislett Games. He was fourth in the 5000m at the 2019 World Championships.

After a successful collegiate career with the Colorado Buffaloes he turned professional in 2020 joining the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein. Klecker holds personal bests of 3:37.00 for 1500m, 7:34.14 for 3000m, 12:54.99 for 5000m, and 27:07.57 for 10000m, all set as a part of the On Athletics Club.
Freweyni Hailu is an Ethiopian middle-distance runner. She won the gold medal at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships over 1500 metres.
Ejgayehu Taye is an Ethiopian Olympic long-distance runner. She won the bronze medal for the 3000 metres at the 2022 World Indoor Championships. Taye is the current world record holder in the 5 km road race.
