Black Mountain is a 10,941-foot (3,335-metre) summit located in Park County, Montana, United States. [3]
Black Mountain is located in the Absaroka Range which is a subrange of the Rocky Mountains. [1] It is situated five miles (8.0 km) southeast of Pine Creek, Montana, and 13 miles (21 km) south-southeast of Livingston. The peak is set within the Absaroka–Beartooth Wilderness on land managed by Gallatin National Forest. [1] Precipitation runoff from the mountain drains into headwaters of Pine Creek which is a tributary of the Yellowstone River. Topographic relief is significant as the west aspect rises over 4,300 feet (1,300 meters) above South Fork Pine Creek in 1.2 mile, and the north aspect rises 1,900 feet (580 meters) above Pine Creek Lake in three-quarters mile. The mountain's descriptive toponym was officially adopted in 1923 by the United States Board on Geographic Names. [3]
Based on the Köppen climate classification, Black Mountain is located in a subarctic climate zone characterized by long, usually very cold winters, and short, cool to mild summers. [4] Winter temperatures can drop below −10 °F with wind chill factors below −30 °F.
Elk Mountain is a 7,835-foot-elevation (2,388-meter) mountain summit located in Flathead County in the U.S. state of Montana. It is situated in the southern tip of Glacier National Park, in the Lewis Range, about four miles to the west side of the Continental Divide. US Highway 2 and the Hi-Line Subdivision of the BNSF Railway traverse the southern base of this mountain, approximately four miles west of Marias Pass. Topographic relief is significant as the northwest aspect rises 3,400 feet above Ole Creek in one mile. The nearest higher neighbor is Sheep Mountain 2.7 miles to the north-northwest. The mountain's name first appeared on a 1914 USGS map, and was officially adopted in 1929 by the United States Board on Geographic Names. The summit is the site of a former fire lookout that was built in the 1930s, and removed in 1963.
Great Northern Mountain is a prominent 8,705-foot-elevation (2,653-meter) mountain summit located in Flathead County in the U.S. state of Montana. It is situated in the Flathead National Forest, in the Flathead Range, west of the Continental Divide. Great Northern Mountain is the highest point in the Great Bear Wilderness, and the nearest higher peak is Mount Saint Nicholas, 10.56 miles to the east-northeast in Glacier National Park. Topographic relief is significant as the west aspect rises 5,100 feet above Hungry Horse Reservoir in four miles, and the east aspect rises the same in five miles above the Middle Fork Flathead Valley. The Great Northern Railway is the namesake of the mountain, and the mountain is the namesake of the Great Northern Brewing Company.
