The Boggabilla railway line is a disused railway line in New South Wales, Australia. It branches from the Mungindi railway line at Camurra and ran for 130 kilometres to Boggabilla.

When the line was first approved, few could have envisaged the development of grain production after the 1940s in the area. It was mainly grazing country then. The Boggabilla line was authorised mainly to ensure that the output of graziers in the area went south through New South Wales ports rather than north, across the border to Queensland.

The line involved only light earthworks, but did include a number of watercourses to be crossed. By mid-1928, clearing had been completed to the 23-mile point and work steadily continued until 1930 when due to a shortage of funds, work closed down for six months. [1]

Opening

The line was eventually opened throughout on 20 June 1932. [2]

Traffic

Upon opening, the train service comprised a twice weekly mixed train running from Moree to Boggabilla on Mondays and Fridays, returning the following day. From 24 February 1936, a weekly CPH railmotor service was introduced. This was later increased to thrice weekly, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. These railmotor services were day returns from Moree. Additionally, goods trains operated as well.

Bulk wheat storage at locations along the line first appeared in 1956 bringing additional traffic to the line. 48 class diesel locomotives first appeared in 1959, speeding up the movement of grain and other freight.

Passenger services came to an abrupt halt on 3 August 1974, when the railmotor service was cancelled in the name of a current fuel crisis. Goods services also diminished at this time, being replaced by road trucks working out of Moree.

By 1978, rail services were largely worked on a seasonal basis, hauling wheat, and an occasional train to Boggabilla to collect sleepers milled locally. [1]

Demise

Since the 1970s, the lines radiating out of Moree have been basically on a seasonal basis only, serving the needs of the grain producers. The stationmaster at Boggabilla was withdrawn in 1979. In 1987, the line was truncated at North Star and grain was road trucked to the silos there and at Crooble. The last train to run to Boggabilla was on 23 November 1987. [1] [3] In November 2013, the remainder of the line was booked out of use. [4] It is able to be reopened with 14 days notice, being reopened in full for three weeks from 28 July 2014. [5]

Future

The line will be reused as part of the new Melbourne to Brisbane inland rail corridor. [6]

The Unanderra–Moss Vale railway line is a cross country railway line in New South Wales, Australia. The line branches from the Illawarra line at Unanderra and winds west up the Illawarra escarpment to join the Main South line at Moss Vale. The line is one of the most scenic in New South Wales, and for the first 20 km after leaving Unanderra has an almost continuous grade 1 in 30 providing extensive views over the Illawarra coastline.

The Gwabegar railway line is a railway line in the Central West and North West Slopes of New South Wales, Australia, which passes through the towns of Mudgee, Gulgong, Dunedoo, Coonabarabran and terminates at Gwabegar.

Newcastle railway line, New South Wales

The Newcastle railway line is a branch railway line in the city of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. The line branches off the Main North line at Broadmeadow and travels in an easterly direction through the inner suburbs to Newcastle Interchange, with one intermediate station at Hamilton. Until its curtailment in December 2014, it extended to Newcastle station. NSW TrainLink operates electric passenger train services over this line as part of its Central Coast & Newcastle Line service, and diesel railcars to Maitland and beyond as part of the Hunter Line.

The Mungindi railway line is a railway line in northern New South Wales, Australia. It branches from the Main North line at Werris Creek station and heads north-west through the towns of Gunnedah and Narrabri before reaching Moree which for many years was the railhead before the extension to Mungindi was constructed. The line is currently truncated to Weemelah between Moree and Mungindi. Passenger trains still operate to Moree, and goods trains operate to Camurra. As of 1 September 2009, services have been suspended between Camurra and Weemelah. The line between Werris Creek and Moree is also known as the North-West line.

The Crookwell railway line is a disused branch railway line in the south of New South Wales, Australia. It has never officially been closed. It branched from the Main South line at North Goulburn and passed north through the localities of Kenmore and Roslyn to the town of Crookwell. The line is set to be converted into a rail trail.

Lake Cargelligo railway line

The Lake Cargelligo railway line is a railway line in Central Western New South Wales, Australia. The first sod was turned commencing construction on 8 June 1913 with the line opening on 13 November 1917. The line branches from the Main South line at Cootamundra and travels in a north-westerly direction to the small town of Lake Cargelligo. The line is used primarily for grain haulage, although passenger service was provided until 1983.

The Naradhan railway line is a railway line in south-western New South Wales, Australia. It branches from Ungarie on the Lake Cargelligo line and heads in a westerly direction, passing through Youngareen and Kikoira, to the small town of Naradhan. The line opened on 11 February 1929 to open up the region for agriculture, and is currently used for seasonal grain haulage. The line saw passenger services until 1974.

The Rand railway line is a closed railway line in New South Wales, Australia. The line ran for 53 km south-west to the town of Rand from the Main South railway line at Henty.

The Blayney–Demondrille railway line is a railway line in New South Wales, Australia. The line is used mainly for grain haulage and is owned by the Transport Asset Holding Entity, a government department of Transport for NSW. However, in 2004 the Australian Rail Track Corporation became responsible for operations over the line. The Lachlan Valley Railway operated heritage and tourist trains over the line, based at Cowra. It previously also operated general goods trains.

Molong–Dubbo railway line Former railway line in New South Wales

The Molong–Dubbo railway line is an inactive railway line in western New South Wales, Australia. It branched off the Broken Hill line at Molong and paralleled the Main West line before rejoining it at Dubbo. The line was designed with gentler grades than the steeper section of the Main Western line via Wellington, but this resulted in it taking a meandering course.

Founded by United States company Genesee & Wyoming in 1997 as Australian Southern Railroad, and later renamed Genesee & Wyoming Australia, it was renamed One Rail Australia in February 2020. Aurizon agreed terms in October 2021 to buy the business, subject to being granted regulatory approval.

Inverell railway line Closed railway line in New South Wales, Australia

The Inverell railway line is a closed railway line in New South Wales, Australia. The line branches from the Mungindi line at Moree and travels in an easterly direction through the town of Gravesend then Warialda Rail, gradually increasing in elevation through Delungra towards the terminus at Inverell. An initial estimate of its intended length was 96 miles 35 chains (155.2 km). The line opened in February 1900 as far as Gravesend, then more of the line in 1901 before the Gwydir River bridge was finally finished and the line completed in 1902. It was progressively closed between 1987 and 1994. Currently a 5 km (3.1 mi) section at the Moree end remains in use as a siding for the storage of railway wagons. On 8 August 2016, The NSW Government announced that a 2.8km section of the railway would be reinstated to allow grain to be sent by rail, as part of the Fixing Country Rail pilot round. Up to $2 million was allocated for the project.

Croppa Creek is a very small village and railway location in the Gwydir Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It was the site of a railway station on the Boggabilla branch between Moree and North Star from 1932 until 1976 and is still a seasonal loading point for freight trains carrying bulk grain. In the 2016 census, the area surrounding Croppa Creek had a population of 120.

Cooma Monaro Railway

The Cooma Monaro Railway is a tourist railway that is working on running trains on a 14 kilometre section of the Bombala line between Cooma and Rock Flat in New South Wales, Australia. Currently in voluntary cessation of services until the current infrastructure is brought up to speed. It runs a monthly market on the second Sunday of the month and aims to reopen the museum in 2021, with a long-term plan to reopen the track to Rock Flat.

The Cobram railway line was a short branch of the Tocumwal line in the north-eastern region of the Victorian railway network.
