Volleyball at the 2004 Summer Paralympics was staged at the Helliniko Fencing Hall from 21 to 27 September. Two sitting volleyball team events were held, one for men and one for women. The sport is performed sitting down, on a smaller court with a lower net.
Sitting volleyball is a form of volleyball for athletes with a disability organized by World ParaVolley. As opposed to standing volleyball, sitting volleyball players must sit on the floor to play.
Sabahudin Delalić is a sitting volleyball player from Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is the current captain of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team – ASOBiH. He has won four medals at Summer Paralympics. At the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, he won gold medal as well as at the 2012 London Games. Also, he won silver medals at 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney and at 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, where he was also bearer of national flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, having become independent from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992, made its Paralympic Games début at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, with merely two athletes competing in men's track and field. The country has competed in every edition of the Summer Paralympics since then, and made its Winter Paralympics début at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, with a single representative in alpine skiing.
World ParaVolley, formerly the World Organization Volleyball for Disabled (WOVD), is an international organization that is for people with physical disabilities. It is affiliated with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The World Organization Volleyball for Disabled was established in 1981 and was part of the International Sports Organization for Disabled (ISOD). In 1992 the WOVD became its own separate Organization in Barcelona, Spain. The WOVD Headquarters were also established in the Netherlands. The WOVD is responsible for managing and controlling the conduct of international volleyball competitions for men, women and youth. The WOVD also liaises with IPC (as an independent organisation) and with other organizations for people with or without disabilities. The organization adopted its present name World ParaVolley at its 2014 general assembly.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina men's national sitting volleyball team represents Bosnia and Herzegovina in international sitting volleyball competitions and friendly matches. Bosnia is one of the dominant forces in sitting volleyball worldwide, alongside Iran. The team won a bronze medal, during ECVD European Championships in 1997 in Tallinn. It took nearly two decades later for the nation to win a medal outside the sport of sitting volleyball when Amel Tuka won bronze during 2015 World Championships in Athletics.
The Iran men's national sitting volleyball team represents the Islamic Republic of Iran in international sitting volleyball competitions and friendly matches. The team is one of the dominant forces on the court worldwide. In foreign media, team Iran is colloquially known as the dream team of sitting volleyball.

Volleyball at the 2016 Summer Paralympics was held from 9 September to 18 September at the Riocentro Pavilion 6 in Rio de Janeiro. Two sitting volleyball team events were held, one for men and one for women.
Nizam Čančar is a Bosnian male Paralympic sitting volleyball player. He is part of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. He competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics winning the gold medal. On club level he played for Oki Fantomi in 2012.
Morteza Mehrzadselakjani, often referred to as Morteza Mehrzad, is an Iranian volleyball player who plays on the Iran men's national sitting volleyball team. With a height of 247 cm, he also holds the record for the longest hand in the world with a size of 29 cm. He is known as the tallest living man in Iran and the second tallest living man in the world. He won three gold medals at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, 2020 Summer Paralympics and 2024 Summer Paralympics, is two-time World Para Volleyball champion, three-time gold medalist at the Asian Games with Iran men's national sitting volleyball team, and three-time winner of the Golden Ball award for the best player.
The Germany men's national sitting volleyball team represents (Germany) in international sitting volleyball competitions and friendly matches. Until 1990 team competed as West Germany in sitting volleyball.
World Para Volleyball Championship, was played first time at 1983 and organized by World ParaVolley.

The winners secure a ticket to the 2024 Summer Paralympics. Iran were the defending champions and successfully defended their title triumphing over Bosnia and Herzegovina in straight sets.
The 2022 Sitting Volleyball World Championships – Women's event was the 8th edition of this tournament. For the first time, the competition was held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The winners secure a ticket to the 2024 Summer Paralympics. Russia were the defending champions, but couldn't defend their title due to their suspension because of their invasion of Ukraine. Brazil won their first title, beating Canada, 3–2, in the final.
The 2023 Sitting Volleyball European Championships – Men's event was the 21th edition of this tournament. For the first time, the competition was held in Caorle, Italy. The winners qualify for the 2024 Summer Paralympics. The defending champions are Bosnia and Herzegovina. They successfully defended their title after defeating Germany, 3–2, in the final.
