BoxBoxBoy! [lower-alpha 1] is a puzzle-platform game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS handheld game console. The second game in the BoxBoy! series, the game was released in Japan in January 2016, [1] and in other territories in June 2016. [2]

Gameplay

Just like the previous game, BoxBoxBoy! once again has players controlling Qbby, a box-shaped character who can create boxes from out of his body. Like before, players use boxes to solve various puzzles, such as climbing on ledges, pushing switches, and avoiding obstacles, in order to reach the end of each level. This time around, Qbby is able to create two sets of boxes at a time, allowing for more complex puzzle solving. Players can use medals earned from completing levels to unlock costumes, music tracks, and 4-panel comic strips, and unlock additional levels by collecting crowns. [3]

Reception

BoxBoxBoy! received positive reviews from critics. On Metacritic, the game holds a score of 80/100 based on 26 reviews. [5] Chris Carter from Destructoid gave the game a score of 7.5/10, saying that it had a "simplistic elegance". [6] Game Informer's Kyle Hilliard gave the game an 8/10, stating that it was "remarkably similar" to its predecessor and failed to expand on the original concept, but that these were not "bad things". [7]

BoxBoy! is a puzzle-platform game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS handheld console. Players control Qbby, a square-shaped character who can produce a string of connected boxes. The boxes are used to overcome obstacles in stages that Qbby must be guided through. The project plan for BoxBoy! was devised in 2011 by director Yasuhiro Mukae, although the game did not enter development until 2013. The core gameplay concept remained the same throughout the title's development, however, changes were made to length of levels and the structure of the game. Each set of stages was designed with a specific theme in mind with the intention of expanding the game's depth by introducing new elements continuously. The game was released via the Nintendo eShop distribution service in Japan in January 2015, and worldwide in April 2015.

The first game in the series was titled Scribblenauts and was first released on September 15, 2009, in North America, exclusively on the Nintendo DS. Since the release of the first game, five other Scribblenauts games have been released, in addition to two compilations and two comic adaptations.
