Burleigh is an unincorporated community in northeastern Austin County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, its population was 69 from 1972 through 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area.
Burleigh is situated a distance of 6.7 miles (10.8 km) southeast of Bellville where eastbound FM 529 intersects with northbound FM 331. From Burleigh, FM 529 goes 33.5 miles (53.9 km) east to link with State Highway 6 in the Houston area. FM 331 connects with State Highway 36, 5.9 miles (9.5 km) to the south. For 0.4 miles (0.6 km) at Burleigh, FM 331 shares the right-of-way with FM 529, then it heads north 5.9 miles (9.5 km) before state maintenance ends at Oil Field Road. The Brazos River is 1.6 miles (2.6 km) east on FM 529, which is also called Crump Ferry Road. [1] Burleigh is also located 26 mi (42 km) southeast of Brenham. [2]
The eastern part of Austin County was first settled in the 1820s, but the community itself did not appear until the late 19th century. A post office began operating out of a general store in Burleigh in 1893, but it closed in 1913. As late as 1968 the population was reckoned at about 150 souls, but in 1972 there were only 69 persons and remained at that level through 2000. There were three churches in Burleigh in the early 1980s. [3]
Camp Gillespie, a Confederate prison, was located in Burleigh.
Burleigh had its own school in 1918 and had 62 students enrolled. It then had two schools in the early 1880s. [3] Today, the community is served by the Bellville Independent School District.

State Highway 6 (SH 6) runs from the Red River, the Texas–Oklahoma state line, to northwest of Galveston, where it is known as the Old Galveston Highway. In Sugar Land and Missouri City, it is known as Alvin-Sugarland Road and runs perpendicular to Interstate 69/U.S. Highway 59 (I-69/US 59). In the Houston area, it runs north to Farm to Market Road 1960 (FM 1960), then northwest along US 290 to Hempstead, and south to Westheimer Road and Addicks, and is known as Addicks Satsuma Road. In the Bryan–College Station area, it is known as the Earl Rudder Freeway. In Hearne, it is known as Market Street. In Calvert, it is known as Main Street. For most of its length, SH 6 is not a limited-access road. In 1997, the Texas Legislature designated SH 6 as the Texas Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway.
State Highway 321 is a north–south highway in southeastern Texas, starting at US 90 in Dayton and ending at Loop 573 in Cleveland. The route was designated on October 30, 1939.

Shelby is an unincorporated community in Austin County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 175 in 2000. It is located within the Texas German belt region, a region stretching from Sealy in the east to Fredericksburg in the west, settled by German emigrants. To this day, Austin County has a large German Texan population and many people still speak German.
DeWalt or Dewalt was an unincorporated area in Fort Bend County, in the U.S. state of Texas. The former community was located on State Highway 6 between Oilfield Road and Farm to Market Road 1092 (FM 1092). DeWalt has been absorbed by the municipality of Missouri City, a Houston suburb. Though Dewalt was noted on highway signs as late as 2013, there are few surviving structures and locations from the original community. In 2006, the Dew Plantation's house was moved from DeWalt to nearby Kitty Hollow Park to preserve it as a museum. The private Dewalt Cemetery still exists within the Lake Olympia subdivision.
