Post Oak Point is an unincorporated community in Austin County, in the U.S. state of Texas. [1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 40 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area.

History

The area in what is known as Post Oak Point today was first settled around 1850 by German immigrants who raised cotton and livestock. The town itself was founded at the turn of the century and a church was located somewhere near the area. A post office was established at Post Oak Point in 1901 and remained in operation until 1907 and was named for the lumber along a stretch of the east bank of the San Bernard River. A store was opened by F.B. Miller in 1910. Five years later, it had a population of 100. It went down to 75 in 1936 with two businesses. It continued to shrink to 40 in 2000. [2]

Geography

Post Oak Point is located along the banks of the San Bernard River tributary of Post Oak Point Creek, 3 mi (4.8 km) south of Industry in far western Austin County, near the Colorado County line. [2]

Education

A school was located near Post Oak Point sometime before the 20th century. [2] Today, the community is served by the Bellville Independent School District.

History of Austin, Texas

The recorded history of Austin, Texas, began in the 1830s when Anglo-American settlers arrived in Central Texas. In 1837 settlers founded the village of Waterloo on the banks of the Colorado River, the first permanent settlement in the area. By 1839, Waterloo would adopt the name Austin and become the capital of the Republic of Texas.

Lebanon was the name of two different communities that were founded in Texas in the 19th Century, neither of which exists today. The first was a town located in Collin County that had a post office designated as Lebanon, Texas, before it was relocated to Frisco, Texas. The second was a smaller unincorporated community located in Live Oak County of which only a cemetery remains today.
