Bushranger (foaled 19 February 2006) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed his best form as a two-year-old in 2008 when he won four of his seven races including the Anglesey Stakes in Ireland, the Prix Morny in France and the Middle Park Stakes in England as well as finishing second in the Phoenix Stakes. He was rated the second-best juvenile of the year in Europe. Bushranger failed to recapture his form in three starts as a three-year-old and was retired to stud at the end of 2009. He has had some success as a sire of winners.

Background

Bushranger is a bay horse with no white markings bred in Ireland by the County Westmeath-based Tally-Ho Stud. As a foal, Bushranger was offered for sale at Goffs on 15 November 2006 and bought for 15,000 euros by the Oaks Farm. [2] In August 2007 the yearling returned to the sales ring at Doncaster and was bought for 100,000 guineas by John O'Byrne, acting on behalf of John Magnier's Coolmore Stud. [3] The colt was sent into training with Magnier's son-in-law David Wachman in County Tipperary. Like many Coolmore horses, the official details of his ownership changed from race to race: he was sometimes listed as being the property of either Derrick Smith, or Michael Tabor whilst on other occasions he was described as being owned by a partnership of Smith, Tabor and Susan Magnier.

Bushranger was sired by Danetime, a high-class sprinter who recorded his biggest win when taking the Stewards' Cup as a three-year-old in 1997. [4] As a breeding stallion he sired several other good winners including Myboycharlie (Prix Morny), Utmost Respect (Duke of York Stakes), Baltic King (Wokingham Stakes), Vital Equine (Champagne Stakes) and Look Busy (Temple Stakes). [5] Bushranger's dam Danz Danz was an unraced daughter of Efisio. She was a granddaughter of Docklands, a half-sister of the 1000 Guineas winner Night Off. [6]

Racing career

2008: two-year-old season

On his racecourse debut Bushranger contested a five furlong maiden race at Tipperary Racecourse on 5 June and started third favourite behind the Aidan O'Brien-trained Navajo and the filly Nubar Lady in a field of twelve. Ridden by Wayne Lordan he raced close behind the leaders before overtaking Nubar Lady in the final strides and winning by a neck. [7] The colt was then sent to England and stepped up in class for the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot on 17 June. He started the 4/1 but after being slightly hampered at half way he was beaten half a length by the 100/1 outsider Flashmans Papers. The colt then returned to Ireland for the Group Three Anglesey Stakes over six and a half furlongs at the Curragh on 13 July. With Lordan again in the saddle he started the 7/2 second favourite behind the O'Brien-trained Westphalia whilst the other five runners included Intense Focus and Heart of Fire, the winner of the Listed Rochestown Stakes. After being restrained just behind the leaders he took the lead a furlong out and won "comfortably" by two and a half lengths from Westphalia. [8]

Two weeks after his win in the Anglesey Stakes, Bushranger started the 2/1 second favourite in a five-runner field for the Group One Phoenix Stakes over six furlongs at the Curragh but never looked likely to win and finished third behind Mastercraftsman and the British-trained favourite Art Connoisseur. The colt was then sent to France for the Prix Morny over 1200 metres at Deauville Racecourse on 24 August in which he was ridden by Johnny Murtagh. He was made the 4.5/1 favourite ahead of the Italian-trained Lui Rei (winner of the Prix Robert Papin) whilst the other twelve runners included Classic Blade (July Stakes), Naaqoos (later to win the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère), Silver Frost (Prix de Cabourg), Gallagher (runner-up in the Richmond Stakes) and Lord Shanakill (runner-up in the Vintage Stakes). After tracking the leaders, Bushranger began to make progress 300 metres out, took the lead 150 metres from the finish and won by half a length from Gallagher. [9] Wachman commented "It was great. We have always thought a lot of him, and Johnny gave him a very good ride. It all went to plan, he got a lead and took it up late" [10] before adding "He'll get seven furlongs the way he stayed today. The owners have a lot of horses and we'll have to see what fits in with their plans". [11]

Murtagh again took the ride when Bushranger started the 15/8 favourite for the Group One Middle Park Stakes over six furlong at Newmarket Racecourse on 2 October. Gallagher and Classic Blade were again in opposition whilst the other six runners included Prolific (Richmond Stakes), Finjaan (Molecomb Stakes), Sayif (third in the Mill Reef Stakes) and the highly regarded maiden winner Huntdown. Bushranger raced down the centre of the wide, straight course, tracking the leader Sayil whilst most of the other runners raced on the far side (the right hand side from the jockeys' viewpoint). He overtook Sayil inside the final furlong and stayed on to win by one and a quarter lengths with a gap of two and a half lengths back to Huntdown in third. [12] After the race Murtagh said "He's a grand little horse and I'm learning a lot about him. He's a strong two-year-old who's very professional and just keeps on winning." [13]

On his final race of the year Bushranger was sent to California for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile on the synthetic Pro-Ride surface at Santa Anita Park and was made the 5.5/1 fourth choice in the betting. Drawn on the outside he was forced to race wide throughout the race and finished eleventh of the twelve runners. The only horse who finished behind him was the subsequent Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. [14]

2009: three-year-old season

In 2009 Bushranger was matched against older horses in major sprint races but made little impact in three starts. On his seasonal debut he contested the Greenlands Stakes over six furlongs at the Curragh and finished fourth behind the five-year-old gelding Utmost Respect. In his two remaining races Bushranger failed to reach the frame in British Group One races, finishing eleventh behind Art Connoisseur in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and ninth to Regal Parade in the Haydock Sprint Cup on 5 September. Assessment

In the 2008 European Thoroughbred Rankings, Bushranger was given a rating of 121, making him the second-best juvenile of the year, one pound behind Mastercraftsman. [16]

Stud record

After his retirement from racing, Bushranger returned to his birthplace to become a breeding stallion at the Tally-Ho Stud in Ireland before being exported to Turkey in 2016. [17] The best of his Irish progeny have included Ridge Ranger (Summer Stakes), Outback Traveller (Wokingham Stakes), Mobsta (Greenlands Stakes) and Now Or Never (Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial). [18]

Again (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Again was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the leading Irish two-year-old fillies of 2008, when she won three of her five races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She recorded her most important win when taking the Irish 1,000 Guineas on her three-year-old debut, but was beaten in her three subsequent races.

Excellent Art was a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old he was trained in England and showed good form, winning the National Stakes and the Mill Reef Stakes and being placed in both the Prix Morny and the Railway Stakes. In the following year he was moved in Ireland and was even better: he won the St James's Palace Stakes, finished second in the Sussex Stakes, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Breeders' Cup Turf and was rated one of the best three-year-old colts in the world. He was then retired to stud and had some success as a sire of winners before being exported to India in 2013.

Black Minnaloushe is an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Bred in Kentucky, he was sold as a yearling and sent to Ireland to race for the Irish-based Coolmore Stud organisation. After winning both his races as a juvenile, he was initially disappointing in the early part of 2001 but then showed marked improvement to win the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes. He was beaten in his last four races and was retired to stud at the end of the year. He has had success as a breeding stallion in the United States, New Zealand and South Africa.

Minardi was an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was the top-rated European two-year-old in 2000 when he recovered from a defeat on his debut to win the Phoenix Stakes and the Middle Park Stakes. Intense Focus was an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old he was highly tried, running nine times. After winning a maiden race in May he was placed in the Coventry Stakes, Railway Stakes and Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère before recording a 20/1 upset victory in the Dewhurst Stakes. He failed to win in two starts in 2009 and was retired from racing. He has hsd some success as a breeding stallion.

Beethoven is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his upset victory in the 2009 Dewhurst Stakes. He was highly tried as a juvenile and ran prominently in several major races before winning the Dewhurst on his tenth appearance of the season at odds of 33/1. As a three-year-old he won the Desmond Stakes and ended his year with a success in the Qatar Derby. He was based in Qatar for the rest of his racing career, making his last appearance in 2015.

Saffron Walden was a French-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Bred by Stavros Niarchos he fetched IR£1,200,000 as a yearling and showed considerable promise on his only run as a two-year-old when he finished second in the Killavullan Stakes. In the spring of 1999 he emerged as a top-class miler, winning the 2000 Guineas Trial Stakes before recording an emphatic victory in the Irish 2000 Guineas. He was fancied for The Derby but finished seventh and was disappointing in his two subsequent races. After being retired from racing he stood as a breeding stallion in Japan and Ireland with limited success as a sire of winners.

Winona was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for her win in the Irish Oaks. In a racing career which lasted from July 1997 until November 1998 she raced in four different countries and compiled a record of two wins one second and one third from nine starts. As a two-year-old in 1997 she showed considerable promise when winning on her first appearance and later finished second in the Group 3 C L Weld Park Stakes. In the following year she finished fourth in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and third in the Coronation Stakes before being stepped up in distance and recording an emphatic win in the Irish Oaks. Moonstone is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for her win in the Irish Oaks. Unraced as a two-year-old, her six-race track career lasted from April to October 2008. After finishing second in a maiden race on her debut she ran fourth in the Musidora Stakes and second in The Oaks before recording her first and only victory in the Irish Oaks. She finished unplaced in two subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. As a broodmare she has produced several good winners including US Army Ranger.

Alfred Nobel is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old in 2009 he was beaten in his first two races but after winning a maiden race at his third attempt he went on to record major victories in the Railway Stakes and the Phoenix Stakes. He was beaten in three subsequent races that year and failed to recover his form in two starts as a three-year-old. After his retirement from racing he stood a breeding stallion in Ireland and Australia.

Zoffany was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best two-year-olds of 2010 in Ireland when he won five of his seven races including the Golden Fleece Stakes, Tyros Stakes and Phoenix Stakes. In the following year he failed to win a race but produced a career-best effort to run Frankel to three quarters of a length in the St James's Palace Stakes. He was retired from racing at the end of the year to become a breeding stallion and made a very promising start to his stud career. He died in January 2021 at the age of 13.

U S Navy Flag Thoroughbred racehorse trained in Ireland

U S Navy Flag is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2017 he became the first horse in 35 years to win both the Middle Park Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes. As two-year-old he was beaten in his first four racecourse appearances, including the Coventry Stakes before winning a maiden race in July. He then finished second in the July Stakes and fourth in the Phoenix Stakes before recording his first significant win in the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes. He won the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse on 30 September and returned to the same track two weeks later to follow up in the Dewhurst Stakes. As a three-year-old in 2018 he ran in several major mile races without success before dropping back to sprint distances to win the July Cup.

Arcano is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best European colts of his generation in 2009 when he was unbeaten in three races including the July Stakes and the Prix Morny. He failed to win in two races as a three-year-old and was retired at the end of his second season. He has stood at a breeding stallion in Ireland and Italy and has had some success as a breeding stallion.

Bad As I Wanna Be was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed his best form as a juvenile in 2000 when he won the Prix Morny by six lengths and took third place in the Middle Park Stakes. He did not run as a three-year-old and had no success when campaigned in Dubai in 2002. He failed to make any impact as a breeding stallion.

Kew Gardens is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. He showed considerable promise as a juvenile in 2017 when he won two of his five races including the Zetland Stakes. In the following year he developed into a top class stayer, taking the Queen's Vase, Grand Prix de Paris and St Leger. As a four-year-old he added another major win as he took the British Champions Long Distance Cup as well as finishing second in the Coronation Cup and the Irish St. Leger.

Ten Sovereigns Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Ten Sovereigns is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. He was one of the best two-year-olds in Europe in 2018 when he was unbeaten in three races including the Round Tower Stakes and the Middle Park Stakes. He was beaten when favourite for the 2000 Guineas on his reappearance in 2019 but subsequently returned to sprint distances and won the July Cup.

Myboycharlie is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best two-year-olds of his generation in Europe when he won his first three races including the Anglesey Stakes and the Prix Morny. He did not live up to his early promise and failed to win again before being retired from racing at the end of the following year. He stood as a breeding stallion in Australia, England, France and Turkey and has had considerable success as a sire of winners.
