Careproctus aciculipunctatus, also called the speckled snailfish, [2] is a species of fish in the family Liparidae (snailfish). [3] [4]
The specific name is from Latin acicula ("spinule") and punctatus ("dotted"). [5]
Careproctus aciculipunctatus is maximum 21 cm (8.3 in) long, [6] Its body and peritoneum are black. [7]
The pleural ribs are absent and there is one hypural plate, without slit. Its mouth is terminal (pointed straight forward) and its teeth simple. Its body is densely echinated (bristled) with very small spinules. [5]
Careproctus aciculipunctatus lives in the northeast Atlantic Ocean, to the southwest of Ireland; it was first discovered off the Porcupine Bank. It lives in the bathydemersal zone, up to 4,100 m (13,500 ft) deep. [8] [9]
The snailfishes or sea snails are a family of marine ray-finned fishes, these fishes make up the Liparidae which is classified within the order Scorpaeniformes.

The Atlantic pomfret, also known as Ray's bream, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a pomfret of the family Bramidae. It is found in the Atlantic, Indian, and South Pacific Oceans, at depths down to 1,000 m (3,300 ft).
Paraliparis is a genus of fish in the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. It is found in benthic, benthopelagic and pelagic habitats in all the world's oceans.
Careproctus is a genus of snailfishes found in benthic and benthopelagic habitats in the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic and Southern Oceans. Whether they truly are absent from the Indian Ocean is unknown and might be an artifact of limited sampling. They range from shallow coastal seas in the far north of their range to the abyssal zone, at depths of 6 to 5,459 m (20–17,910 ft). In the Northern Hemisphere they mostly live shallower than Paraliparis, but this pattern is reversed in the Southern Hemisphere. Although almost entirely restricted to very cold waters, a single species, C. hyaleius, lives at hydrothermal vents.
Careproctus pallidus is a species of snailfish found around Tierra del Fuego in the far south of South America.
Liparis is a large genus of snailfish from the northern hemisphere. They are very common in temperate and cold waters. Chernova (2008) has proposed that the genus should be subdivided into five subgenera: Liparis, Neoliparis, Lycocara, Careliparis, and Lyoliparis.
Allocareproctus is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Liparidae, the snailfishes. These fish are found in the northern Pacific Ocean.
Volodichthys is a genus of snailfishes found in deep water, more than 750 m (2,460 ft), of southern oceans near Antarctica and southern South America. Its members were formerly included in the genus Careproctus.
The smallmouth spiny eel, also called the shortspine tapirfish, is a species of deep-sea spiny eel.
The black seasnail is a species of fish in the family Liparidae (snailfish).

The common Atlantic grenadier is a species of fish in the family Macrouridae.
Polymetme thaeocoryla is a species of fish in the family Phosichthyidae (lightfish).
Leptostomias gladiator is a species of fish in the family Stomiidae. It is sometimes called the scaleless dragonfish, but that name is shared with many other species.
Paraliparis abyssorum is a species of fish in the family Liparidae (snailfish).
