The cinema of Rajasthan refers to films produced in Rajasthan in north-western India. These films are produced in various regional and tribal languages including Rajasthani and its varieties such as Mewari, Marwari, Hadoti etc.

Overview

The first Rajasthani movie was Nazrana , a Marwari film directed by G. P. Kapoor and released in 1942. [1] Babasa Ri Ladli, produced by B. K. Adarsh, was released in 1961 and has been described as the first hit Rajasthani movie. [2]

The 1983 film Mhari Pyri Channana by producer and director Jatinkumar Agarrwal was the first Silver jubilee film in Rajasthani.[ citation needed ]

Between 1987 and 1995 a number of Rajasthani films [Rajjywood] were produced, including the musical Bai Chali Sasariye from 1988, which was reported to be the only successful Rajasthani-language film production in the 1980s and 1990s. [3]

Since the mid-1990s, the number of films produced in Rajasthan has been low, for reasons including lack of promotion and poor production quality. [4] [3]

Film producers in Rajasthani cinema [Rajjywood] include B. K. Adarsh, Ram Raj Nahta, Bharat Nahta, Bhanu Prakash Rathi, and Ajai Chowdhary, and directors include Nawal Mathur of Jodhpur, Mohan Singh Rathor, Mohan Kataria, Ajit Singh, and Bhanu Prakash Rathi. Neelu Vaghela, Gajendra S. Shrotriya, and Jatinkumar Agarrwal have been both producers and directors.[ citation needed ]

To encourage the production of Rajasthani movies, a tax holiday for cinemas in towns and cities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants was announced in the 2008 budget of the Rajasthani Government, [4] and the entertainment tax was lowered. [5]

Baba Ramdev is a 1963 Rajasthani language devotional feature film directed by Nawal Mathur and Manibhai Vyas, and based on the life of the Hindu folk deity Ramdev Pir.

<i>Antham</i> 1992 Indian film

Drohi in Hindi or Antham in Telugu is a 1992 Indian neo-noir crime film written and directed by Ram Gopal Varma, filmed simultaneously in both Telugu and Hindi languages. It stars Nagarjuna, Urmila Matondkar, Danny Denzongpa. The soundtrack was composed by R. D. Burman, as well as Mani Sharma and M.M. Keeravani, who each composed one song. The background score, of the film, was composed by Mani Sharma. The Hindi version was titled Drohi. However, it was released on 23 October 1992, on Diwali that year, a month after the release of the Telugu version. Both the versions, as well as the music, received positive reviews upon release.

Draupadi Vastrapaharanam was a 1934 Tamil-language film starring T. P. Rajalakshmi, V. A. Chellappa and Serukulathur Sama. The movie was directed by R. Padmanaban. Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema also credits Raghupathi Surya Prakash as the director.

Sarla is a 1936 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Premankur Atorthy. The film was produced by Imperial Film Company. The director of photography was Rustam Irani with music by H. C. Bali. It starred Rattan Bai, Kumar, Hafisji, Pramila, Anant Marathe and Ahindra Choudhury.

<i>Do Boond Pani</i> 1971 Indian film

Do Boond Pani is a 1971 Hindi social drama film produced and directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. Made under the "Naya Sansar" banner; the story, screenplay and dialogues were by Abbas, with additional dialogues by Inder Raj Anand. The music was composed by Jaidev. The cast included Simi Garewal, Jalal Agha and Madhu Chanda and was the debut film of actor Kiran Kumar. The film won the award for Best Feature film on National integration.

Ranga Khush is a Hindi action drama movie of Bollywood directed and produced by Joginder. This film was released in January, 1975 in the banner of Apollo International.

Policewala is a 1993 Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age action thriller film directed by Sikander Bharti and produced by Sundeep Kumar. This movie was released under the banner of Sandeep Films.

Khooni Darinda is a Hindi horror film of Bollywood directed and produced by Dhirubhai Daxini. This film was released in 1987. Lead singers of the film are Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar.

Khoon Ki Takkar is a 1981 Hindi-language action drama film directed by Harish Chawla and produced by P. K. Sharma and Surinder Mohan. The film stars Vinod Mehra, Mahendra Sandhu, and Zarina Wahab in lead roles. This film was released under the banner of Golden Star Movies. Music direction was done by Sonik Omi.

Alor Pipasa is a Bengali drama film directed by Tarun Majumder and produced by Debesh Ghosh based on a same name novel of Balai Chand Mukhopadhyay. This film was released on 15 January 1965 under the banner of D.R. Productions. Music of the movie was done by Hemanta Mukherjee.

Rani Rasmani is a Bengali historical drama film directed by Kali Prasad Ghosh based on the real-life story of Rani Rasmani. This film was released on 11 February 1955 under the banner of Chalachchitra Pratisthan. Actress Molina Devi played the title role of the movie.
