Tulu cinema, also known as Coastalwood, [2] is a part of Indian cinema. The Tulu film industry produces five to seven films annually. [3] The first Tulu film was Enna Thangadi released in 1971. Earlier, these films were released in theatres across the Tulu Nadu region. [4] Tulu film industry has grown to such an extent that films are being released simultaneously in Mangalore, Udupi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Middle East. The critically acclaimed Tulu film Suddha won the award for the best Indian Film at the Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema held in New Delhi in 2006. [5] [6] [7] In 2011, the Tulu film Industry got a second lease of life with the release of the film Oriyardori Asal . The film turned out to be the biggest hit in Tulu film history to date. [8] Chaali Polilu is the longest running film in Tulu film industry. This movie is the highest-grossing film in the Tulu film industry. It has successfully completed 470 days at PVR Cinemas in Mangalore. [9]
On 27 February 2016, Times of India carried a special report regarding the Tulu cinema industry where it was observed that in its 45-year history, of the Tulu industry, only 45 movies were released for the first 40 years from 1971 to 2011, whereas in the five years since then, 21 films have been made. It also identified Oriyardori Asal (with 1,000-plus houseful shows and a 175-day run in the Tulu-dominated regions of south Karnataka) as the turning point of the industry. It also reported that eight films were made in 2014 and eleven films were made in 2015 and identified Kudla Cafe as the 66th film from the Tulu film industry. It also reported that another movie that broke records was Chaali Polilu, a 2014 social comedy film by Virendra Shetty Kavoor, which had a run of 470 shows at a popular multiplex in Mangalore, playing to full houses on the weekends and 50% occupancy on weekdays. It also reported that with a modest budget of Rs 40 lakhs (4,000,000) to Rs 60 lakhs (6,000,000), Tulu films stood out with their touch of reality. [10] [11]
For a language native to about two million people, the main audience for Tulu films is limited to two districts – Dakshina Kannada and Udupi - and Kasaragod taluk. They also see a limited release in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Dubai. [12]
The 2014 movie Madime was reported to be remade in Marathi, thereby becoming the first Tulu movie to be remade in another language. [13] Shutterdulai is the first remake in Tulu cinema. [14] Eregla Panodchi is the second remake in Tulu cinemas. A suit for damages of Rs. 25 lakhs (2,500,000) was filed against the makers of the Telugu film Brahmotsavam for copying the first 36 seconds of the song A...lele...yereg madme by Dr. Vamana Nandaavara found on the Deepanalike CD composed for the Siri channel. The song was used in the movie in a sequence involving the lead actor who, while accompanying his family on a tour, dances to the tune of the hit Tulu song. [15] [16] Prajavani reported that with its dubbing rights sold to Hindi for 21 lakhs (2,100,000), the 2018 movie Umil became the first Tulu movie to achieve the feat. [11] [10]
Ashwini Kotiyan (Chaya Harsha) became the first female director in the Tulu industry after directing and releasing her first movie Namma Kudla. [17] Brahmashree Narayana Guruswamy released on 2 May 2014 was the 50th Tulu film. [3] Panoda Bodcha marked the 75th release anniversary of a Tulu film. Tulu is a Dravidian language whose speakers are concentrated in Dakshina Kannada and in the southern part of Udupi of Karnataka in south-western India and also in the northern parts of the Kasaragod district of Kerala. The native speakers of Tulu are referred to as Tuluva or Tulu people and the geographical area is unofficially called Tulu Nadu.

It is located between the Laccadive Sea and the Western Ghats about 352 km (219 mi) west of Bangalore, the state capital, 14 km north of Karnataka–Kerala border and 297 km south of Goa. Udupi is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. Udupi is situated about 55 km (34 mi) north of the educational, commercial and industrial hub of Mangalore and more than 400 km west of state capital Bangalore by road.
Konkani cinema is an Indian film industry, where films are made in the Konkani language, which is spoken mainly in the Indian states of Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka and to a smaller extent in Kerala. The films have been produced in Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala.
Oriyardori Asal is a 2011 Indian Tulu language film directed by H. S. Rajashekar and starring Likith Shetty, Ramya Barna, Naveen D Padil, Aravind Bolar and Rekha Das in the lead roles. It is the most successful Tulu film till date. The film is based on the famous Tulu comedy drama with the same title, written by Vijayakumar Kodialbail. He also wrote the story, screenplay, dialogue and lyrics for the film.
Ekka Saka is a 2015 Tulu language film, directed by K. Sooraj Shetty and produced by Lion Kishore D. Shetty for Lukumi Cine Creations. It stars Hitesh Naik and Sonal Monteiro. The film was released on 1 May 2015.
The Red FM Tulu Film Awards is an award ceremony for Tulu films presented by Red FM 93.5 radio station. The awards have been instituted to honour both artistic and technical excellence in Tulu Cinema.
Banger Patler is 1993 Tulu-language romantic drama film directed by Dr. Richard Castelino and starring Vaman Raj in the titular role and Sudha Rani. The film was notably the first Tulu film to be made in Eastman Color and Cinema Scope. It was the first Tulu film to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tulu.
Dhand is a Tulu film directed by Ranjith Bajpe and produced by Shodhan Prasad under the banner of Sandhya Creations. It stars Arjun Kapikad, Sandeep Shetty, Anoop Sagar, Deepak Paladka, Gopinath Bhat, Umesh Mijar, Ranjan Boloor, Shilpa Suvarna, Anvitha Sagar, and Subhash Bangera in the lead roles.
Naveen D. Padil is an Indian theatre and film actor who has performed in over a thousand plays mostly in Tulu language. Known widely in the circles of Tulu theatre from his acting performances as a "Master of Comedy and Tragedy", he is called "Kusalda Arase". He is known mainly for his portrayal of comical characters. Padil along with Devadas Kapikad and Aravind Bolar formed a famous trio that appeared in Tulu comedy plays during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Aravind Bolar is an Indian actor who primarily works in Tulu and Kannada-language films. Bolar began his career in Yakshagana, and he has acted in more than 100 plays and 50 plus films.
Ranjith Kumar, popularly known as Ranjith Bajpe is an Indian film director and Screen Writer known for his work in Tulu cinema. He is best known for directing First International Tulu film Nirel (2014) which won 5 awards including the best movie award at Tulu Cinemotsava 2015. He also written directed Dhand (2015) which is the first Tulu language movie released in Israel Australia and UK. Ranjith Bajpe usually casts new actors for his movies.
Sandeep Shetty is an Indian actor known for his roles in Tulu Cinemas like Dhand, Madime, Ekka Saka and many Dramas and stage performances. He, along with his team, Prashamsa won Bale Telipale, a stand-up comedy contest show on Namma TV for three consecutive years in Coastal Karnataka. Sandeep has performed more than 1000 stage shows in international locations such as Muscat, Dubai, Kuwait and Bahrain, as well as locations within India including Bengaluru, Mumbai and Pune.
Jai Tulunad is a Tulu organisation of Tulu people which works for growth of culture, language and script of Tulunad. The organisation was started in Mulki on Aug 10, 2014. It was registered on 10 Aug 2015. The organisation also teaches Tulu script for free in both mediums online and offline.
Korangrapady Prakash M Shetty is an Indian entrepreneur and social worker who founded and chairs MRG Group, a hospitality and real estate company based in Bangalore, Karnataka. In 2019, he was awarded the Rajyotsava Award, the second-highest civilian honor by the Government of Karnataka.
