In the Indian state of Jharkhand, films are produced in various regional and tribal languages including Kudmali, Hindi, Nagpuri, Khortha and Santali. [1] [2] Film industry in state of Jharkhand is also known as Jhollywood. [3] [4]

Since 2015, Government of Jharkhand is encouraging film shooting in State to highlight the natural beauty, religious place, culture of the state as well as to produce jobs by giving subsidy to film makers. [5] [6] [7] New government of Congress-JMM alliance ended subsidy for regional cinema after coming to power in 2020. [8]

In recent years several Hindi films have been shot in the state including M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, A Death in the Gunj, Ajab singh ki gajab kahani, Ranchi Diaries, Begum Jaan, Panchlait and Ilaka Kishoreganj. Several Nagpuri films have been produced in the recent years including Tor Bina, Mahuaa, Tor Chahat Mein , Mor Gaon Mor Desh and Phulmania. [9] [10]

The upcoming hindi film Lohardaga will show issue of Naxalism and surrender policy in the State. [11] [12] The state also showcased in web and T.V series, e.g - Netflix's Jamtara - Sabka Number Ayega [13] and Hoichoi's Dhanbad Blues. Ekta Kapoor T.V series, Kuch Toh Hai Tere Mere Darmiyan was based on Jamshedpur. [14]

History

The first feature film of Jharkhand was Aakarant made under the banner of drishyantar international, 1988. The first Nagpuri film was Sona Kar Nagpur (1992) produced and directed by Dhananjay Nath Tiwari. [15] [16] [17]

It is a popular tourist destination known for its forests, ancient temples and royal palaces. It was ranked as the fifth cleanest city of India in the year 2023.

Ranchi is the capital of the Indian state of Jharkhand. Ranchi was the centre of the Jharkhand movement, which called for a separate state for the tribal regions of South Bihar, northern Odisha, western West Bengal and the eastern area of what is present-day Chhattisgarh. The Jharkhand state was formed on 15 November 2000 by carving out the Bihar divisions of Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas. Ranchi has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.

Dhanbad is the second-most populated city in the Indian state of Jharkhand after Jamshedpur. It ranks as the 42nd largest city in India and is the 33rd largest million-plus urban agglomeration in India. Dhanbad shares its land borders with Paschim Bardhaman district and Purulia district of West Bengal and Bokaro, Giridih and Jamtara districts of Jharkhand. The city is called the 'Coal Capital of India' for housing one of the largest coal mines in the country. The prestigious institute, Indian School of Mines is situated in Dhanbad. Apart from coal, it has also grown in information technology.

Nagpuri is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the Indian states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Bihar. It is primarily spoken in the west and central Chota Nagpur plateau region. It is sometimes considered a dialect of Bhojpuri.

Prem Prakash Modi is an Indian filmmaker, writer, producer and actor known for his works in Hindi & Bengali cinema. He made his debut as a director in 2013 with the Bengali feature film Arjun – Kalimpong E Sitaharan starring Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Om, Manoj Mitra and Churni Ganguly, based on Samaresh Majumdar's novel Khunkharapi and Kalimpong e Sitaharan. The Nagvanshis of Chotanagpur, also known as the Khokhra chieftaincy, was an Indian dynasty which ruled the parts of Chota Nagpur plateau region during much of ancient, medieval and modern period. Phani Mukut Rai is considered the first king of dynasty claim to be son of Pundrika Naga, a mythical Naga. Lal Chintamani Sharan Nath Shahdeo (1931–2014) was last ruling king of the dynasty, until the estate was merged to the Republic of India.

Dumka Airport, also known as Sido Kanhu Airport, is a private airport and a military base that is located in Dumka, Jharkhand, India. The airport currently does not have any scheduled commercial services and is used only by gliders, private companies and government aircraft. Scheduled services were to begin to the state capital Ranchi under the government's UDAN scheme. The airport's expansion is underway for the commencement of scheduled passenger services. There are also plans to use the facility for training pilots.

Mukund Nayak, is an Indian artist. He is a folk singer, songwriter and dancer. Nayak is an exponent of Nagpuri folk dance Jhumar. He is recipient of the Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

Monika Mundu is an Indian playback singer and actress. She has sung songs in 12 languages including Nagpuri, Bengali, Hindi, Mundari, Santali, Khortha and Kurukh. Her first film was Jharkhand kar Chhaila, She also acted in film M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story.

Bisheshwar Prasad Keshari, popularly known as Dr BP Keshari, was an educationist and writer. He was a prominent leader in the movement for a separate state, Jharkhand.

Raman Gupta is an Indian actor, dancer and singer. He works in Nagpuri albums, Nagpuri films and Khortha film. He also acted in many hindi films. He is known for the Nagpuri film Sun Sajna, Deva Rikshawala and Gangwa. He was awarded best regional actor award in Jharkhand International Film Festival Awards in 2018 and Best Evergreen Actor in Jhollywood Award Show in 2022.

Supriya Kumari is an Indian actress. She is known for her role in Indian television series Bairi Piya, Looteri Dulhan, Anudamini and Sanskaar – Dharohar Apnon Ki. She also acted in Hindi film Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami.
