Clarion Hotel and Casino was located near the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. It included a 12-story hotel with approximately 200 rooms, and a small casino. The property opened as a Royal Inn on April 19, 1970. It was renamed Royal Americana in 1980, and then Paddlewheel in 1983.
Actress Debbie Reynolds purchased the property in 1992, and renamed it a year later as the Debbie Reynolds Hotel. The renovated property included a museum featuring Reynolds' collection of Hollywood memorabilia. The hotel struggled financially, entering bankruptcy in 1997. It was sold a year later to the World Wrestling Federation, which planned to demolish the hotel and build a wrestling themed resort on the land. The project was ultimately canceled, and ownership would change several more times. Following another renovation, the property operated as the Greek Isles from 2001 to 2010, and then under the Clarion brand until its closure on September 1, 2014.
Developer Lorenzo Doumani bought the hotel-casino a month after its closure, and had it demolished for redevelopment. The hotel tower was imploded on February 10, 2015. Four years later, Doumani unveiled plans to build a high-rise hotel, Majestic Las Vegas, on the site. However, the start of construction has been delayed several times as of 2024.
The property originated as part of the Royal Inns of America chain, [1] with construction beginning on August 1, 1969. [2] The $3 million Royal Inn [a] opened on April 19, 1970. [5] [6] It was built on 6 acres (2.4 ha), [7] located just east of the Las Vegas Strip and down the street from the Las Vegas Convention Center. [8] The 12-story hotel contained 200 rooms, and was considered small by Las Vegas standards. [9]
In 1972, Michael Gaughan and Frank Toti bought out the property's gaming operations, [10] [11] and managed the casino for much of the remaining decade. [12] [13] [14] In 1979, fast food operator (and former automat chain) Horn & Hardart purchased the Royal Inn for $17 million. [14] [15] By late 1980, the property was rebranded as the Royal Americana Hotel, with a New York theme. [16] A $3.5 million renovation [17] increased the room count to 300. [18] Nevertheless, the Royal Americana was experiencing substantial losses, and Horn & Hardart decided to close it in 1982. [17] The casino soon reopened with limited offerings, in order to maintain the property's gaming license. [19] [20] [21]
An investment group, which included two Horn & Hardart executives, took over the Royal Americana at the end of 1982, and spent $5.7 million on remodeling. [22] The property debuted as the Paddlewheel on November 21, 1983. [23] [24] Two adjoining structures, containing 113 rooms, were demolished. The original hotel tower was kept, and its west exterior was updated to feature a mural of a paddle steamer crashing through the building. [25] The Paddlewheel had a child-friendly atmosphere, with arcade games and amusement rides, but shifted to an adult focus in the late 1980s, including a male revue. [26] Horn & Hardart put the Paddlewheel back up for sale in 1990, [27] and closed the casino in October 1991. It had 300 slot machines and four table games. [28] [29]
Actress Debbie Reynolds and her husband Richard Hamlett, at his suggestion, [30] bought the shuttered property at auction in 1992, for $2.2 million. [31] Reynolds planned to spend $15 million on renovations, which would include a museum to house her collection of Hollywood memorabilia. [32] [33]
The property reopened in July 1993, as the Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Hotel. [32] [34] Shortly thereafter, Hollywood Casino Corp. filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against the hotel-casino. [34] [35] A settlement was reached by the end of 1993, with "Hollywood" dropped from the name. [36] [37] The property is best remembered under the Debbie Reynolds name, [3] and the adjacent 1,000-foot Mel Avenue was eventually renamed Debbie Reynolds Drive in 1996. [38] [39] A sign from the Debbie Reynolds Hotel would later be acquired by the city's Neon Museum. [40] [41] [42]
Because Reynolds and her husband had no experience in operating a resort, the various amenities were leased out, leaving the couple to focus on live entertainment offerings and the museum. [43] Reynolds herself performed at the property, in a 500-seat theater designed by her son Todd Fisher. [44] [45] The casino, operated by Jackpot Enterprises, [31] measured 6,600 sq ft (610 m2). [46] It included 184 slot machines and two table games. [47]
Reynolds struggled with the financing to complete the project. She took the company public in 1994 to raise money, and the museum finally opened the following year. [48] Rooms in the top three floors of the hotel were sold as timeshares to help raise money, [47] [49] and the property eventually accumulated more than 1,000 unit owners. [46] [50] Reynolds and Hamlett had a troubled marriage, and she eventually paid him $270,000 to buy out his interest. They divorced in 1996. [30]
Fisher said the property was undercapitalized from the time it opened. [51] He blamed early financial problems on mismanagement, and took over operations at the end of 1995. [47] The casino closed in March 1996, after Fisher terminated the agreement with Jackpot as unprofitable. Reynolds could not get a gaming license to operate it in-house because of the company's poor finances. [47] [52]
Reynolds and the hotel both filed for bankruptcy protection in July 1997, [53] [54] and several deals to sell the property failed over the next year. Among the prospective buyers was Westgate Resorts, which planned to add additional timeshare units. [55] Westgate owner David Siegel invested approximately $200,000 to keep the property operational during bankruptcy. [46] [56]
To maintain the site's gaming status, Capado Gaming was brought on to reopen the casino in September 1997, with 25 slot machines. [47] [57] The Debbie Reynolds Hotel was put up for auction in August 1998. [58] Reynolds called it "a sad ending to a lot of hard work and special dreams," saying further, "This represents a long six years of hard work and dedication and love. But you can't look back. That's not the way I want to deal with this." [59]
The winning bidder of the 1998 auction, at $10.65 million, was the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). [60] [61] The company planned to level the building and construct a 35-story, wrestling themed hotel and casino with 1,000 rooms. [62] [63] [64] The WWF stripped much of the interior to prepare for demolition, [65] but ultimately decided the site was not big enough. [66] The project's cancellation was also attributed to cost and unfamiliarity with the gaming industry. [67]
As of 2000, the property was operating as Convention Center Drive Hotel. [49] At the end of the year, the WWF sold it to Chicago-based Mark IV Realty Group for $11.2 million. [49] [68] Mark IV hoped to redevelop the site with 1,000 rooms, [68] but instead remodeled the property with a Greek theme and renamed it the Greek Isles. The renovation project cost $1 million and included a new pool. The casino portion opened on July 20, 2001. [66] [69] It included 100 slot machines and was operated by United Coin. The hotel opened later in 2001, and had 192 rooms. [69] It eventually contracted with Delta Air Lines to house flight crews during layovers. [70]
The property offered various shows during the Greek Isles era. [71] Among these was a Rat Pack tribute show that opened in 2002 and ran for several years. [72] [73] [74] Others included a magic show, [75] [76] a fire-themed production, [77] and a musical tribute to composer Harold Arlen. [78] [79]
In July 2007, the Greek Isles was sold to an investment group, [80] which planned to eventually demolish the hotel-casino and redevelop the land as a mixed-use project. [81] However, a year later, the group defaulted on a $56 million loan that was provided by Canpartners Realty. The property entered bankruptcy in April 2009, [82] and was taken over four months later by Canpartners, [83] [84] which blamed the financial problems on poor management. [85]
In 2010, the property was rebranded as a Clarion hotel, [86] the only location at that time to include a casino. [87] It had two performance venues at that time, [86] with magician Jan Rouven among its entertainers. [88] In 2012, one of the venues was used as a filming location for Lana Del Rey's 2012 short film Ride . [71] [89]
In its final years, the hotel included 202 rooms. [83] The Clarion closed on September 1, 2014, [87] [90] [91] and its inventory was liquidated. [92]
A month after its closure, developer Lorenzo Doumani purchased the Clarion from Canpartners for $22.5 million. He announced plans to demolish the hotel-casino for redevelopment as a mixed-use property. [93] [94] [95] The Clarion's hotel tower was demolished by implosion on February 10, 2015, shortly before 3 a.m. [96] It was the first hotel-casino in Las Vegas to be imploded since the New Frontier in 2007. [91] [97] The Clarion implosion did not go as planned; an elevator shaft on the tower's west side was left standing afterward. Debris from the collapsing tower locked the shaft in place, only allowing it to drop slightly. Later in the day, cables were lassoed around the shaft to bring it down. [98] [99] [100]
On the vacant land, Doumani intends to build a non-gaming high-rise hotel known as Majestic Las Vegas. He announced the project in 2019, but it has been delayed several times, and construction has yet to begin as of 2024. [8] [101] [102]
The Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino is a hotel, casino, and timeshare resort in Winchester, Nevada. Located near the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip, it is owned by Westgate Resorts. It opened in 1969 as the International Hotel, and was known for many years as the Las Vegas Hilton, then briefly as the LVH – Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. From 1981 to 1990, it was the largest hotel in the world.
The Tropicana Las Vegas was a casino hotel on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. It operated from 1957 to 2024. In its final years, the property included a 44,570 sq ft (4,141 m2) casino and 1,467 rooms. The complex occupied 35 acres (14 ha) at the southeast corner of the Tropicana - Las Vegas Boulevard intersection.
Paris Las Vegas is a casino hotel on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. It is owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment. Property features include a 95,263-square-foot (8,850.2 m2) casino, 3,672 hotel rooms, a 1,400-seat performance theater, and various restaurants. The Paris-themed resort also includes a half scale replica of the Eiffel Tower, rising 540 feet (164.6 m). Replicas of other Paris landmarks are featured as well, including the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, the Paris Opera House, and the Musée d'Orsay.
Mandalay Bay is a 43-story luxury resort and casino at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. It is owned by Vici Properties and operated by MGM Resorts International. It was developed by Circus Circus Enterprises and completed at a cost of $950 million. It opened on March 2, 1999, on the former site of the Hacienda hotel-casino. MGM acquired Mandalay Bay in 2005, and The Blackstone Group became a co-owner in 2020. Vici acquired MGM's ownership stake in 2022.
The Stardust Resort and Casino was a casino resort located on 60 acres (24 ha) along the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. The Stardust was conceived by Tony Cornero, and construction began in 1954. Cornero died in 1955, and the project was taken over by his brother. The Stardust had numerous creditors, and construction was stopped in 1956, when the project ran out of money.
The Venetian Las Vegas is a luxury hotel and casino resort located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, United States. It is owned by Vici Properties and operated by Apollo Global Management. It was developed by businessman Sheldon Adelson through his company, Las Vegas Sands. The Venetian was built on the former site of the Sands Hotel and Casino, which was closed and demolished in 1996.
The Mirage is a defunct casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, United States. It is owned by Vici Properties and operated by Hard Rock International. The 65-acre property includes a 90,548 sq ft (8,412.2 m2) casino and 3,044 rooms.

The resort includes a 64,470 sq ft (5,989 m2) casino and 2,494 hotel rooms. It also features the Miracle Mile Shops and PH Live, a 7,000-seat entertainment venue.
The Riviera was a hotel and casino on the northern Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. It opened on April 20, 1955, and included a nine-story hotel featuring 291 rooms. The Riviera was the first skyscraper in the Las Vegas Valley, and was the area's tallest building until 1956. Various hotel additions would be made in later years, including a 12-story tower in 1966, a 17-story tower in 1975, and a 24-story tower in 1988. By the time of its closure in 2015, the resort included a 103,800 sq ft (9,640 m2) casino and 2,075 rooms.
The Rio is a hotel and casino near the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, United States. It is owned and operated by Dreamscape Companies LLC. It includes a 117,330 sq ft (10,900 m2) casino and 2,520 suites. It features a Brazilian theme based on Rio Carnival.
Oyo Hotel & Casino is a casino hotel near the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, United States. It is owned by Highgate and Oyo Hotels & Homes, and its casino is operated by Paragon Gaming. It is located east of the Strip and next to the former site of the Tropicana resort. The hotel has 696 rooms with a 30,000-square-foot (2,800 m2) casino.
Palms Casino Resort is a hotel and casino located near the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, United States. It is owned and operated by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. It includes 703 rooms and a 94,065 sq ft (8,738.9 m2) casino. It was originally owned by the Maloof family, and primarily overseen by George Maloof. He purchased the site in 1997, and construction began three years later. The Palms opened on November 15, 2001, with Station Casinos and The Greenspun Corporation as minority owners. It included a casino, restaurants, nightclubs, and a 42-story hotel. The resort catered to local residents and tourists, and also became popular among celebrities and young adults. It has made several television appearances, and was the main setting for the 2002 reality television show The Real World: Las Vegas, which contributed to its fame.
The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is a resort casino and hotel on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. It is owned by The Blackstone Group, Stonepeak Partners, and Cherng Family Trust and operated by MGM Resorts International. The resort includes a 100,000 sq ft (9,300 m2) casino and 3,033 rooms across two towers, as well as a 3,200-seat performance theater and various restaurants.
South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa is a resort located along Las Vegas Boulevard in Enterprise, Nevada, south of the Las Vegas Strip. It is owned and operated by Michael Gaughan, the founder of Coast Casinos. It includes a 137,232 sq ft (12,749.3 m2) casino and a 25-story hotel with 2,163 rooms.
Klondike Hotel and Casino was a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, in the United States. The property began as the Kona Kai Motel in 1962, and was purchased by Ralph Engelstad in 1969. The motel was sold to John Woodrum, who renamed it as the Klondike Inn in 1976. A casino was eventually added, and the Klondike became popular among local residents. In 2005, the Klondike was sold to Royal Palm Las Vegas, which planned to replace it with a casino and condo hotel resort known as Paramount Las Vegas. The Klondike closed in June 2006, and was demolished in March 2008. Royal Palm Las Vegas had difficulty obtaining financing for the Paramount project, and the land was put up for sale later in 2008. A Harley-Davidson dealership opened on the former Klondike property in 2014.
Tuscany Suites and Casino is located east of the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The project was conceived by Las Vegas developer Charles Heers, and is owned by his son Brett Heers. The all-suite hotel opened in December 2001, with 716 rooms. The casino, which includes 24,665 sq ft (2,291.5 m2) of gaming space, opened on January 17, 2003.
Arizona Charlie's Decatur is a hotel and locals casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. It includes 258 rooms and 55,227 sq ft (5,130.8 m2) of gaming space. The property began in 1963, as a bowling alley developed by the Becker family. Bruce Becker eventually took over management and proposed adding a hotel-casino. The property opened in April 1988, and is named after a distant relative of the family, Arizona Charlie.
