The Clinch Mountain District was a district of the Virginia High School League. The league's mission was to establish and maintain "standards for student activities and competitions that promote education, personal growth, sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship." The secondary schools within the district compete in various events, predominantly athletics. The district was formed as part of a comprehensive redistricting plan to balance the four regions competing in Groups A and AA.
The district's initial five-member schools were Gate City High School, John S. Battle High School, Lebanon High School, Lee High School, and Virginia High School. All five secondary schools are located in Southwestern Virginia either along or to the northwest of Interstate 81. As of the 2006 realignment, the student enrollments of the schools were as follows: Battle, 638; Gate City, 599; Lebanon, 575; Lee, 840; and Virginia, 730.
Lee High had an enrollment that would normally be put in Group AA. However, by 2007, several nearby schools had dropped down to Group A due to declining enrollment. The nearest AA schools were now in Marion, Bristol and Abingdon—more than an hour and a half away. Thus, a travel hardship was declared, allowing Lee to play in Group A.
Virginia High School was also assigned to play in Group AA. The school had successfully appealed the assignment to the Lonesome Pine District of Group A during the 2005 redistricting plan, but this time chose not to appeal. With Lee and Virginia out of the district, the old Highlands District had only two member schools, both of which were assigned to the Southwest District, according to the state's 2007-08 and 2008-09 Final Alignment Plan.
Gate City High School was taken from the Lonesome Pine District and reunited with rival schools Lee and Virginia. The move was necessary to balance the district.
John S. Battle and Lebanon high schools were taken from the Hogoheegee District of Group A and placed within the A Clinch Mountain District. Both schools were in Group AA during the early 1990s but have been in Group A for more than a decade. While those schools tried to stay in the Hogoheegee district, the appeals were denied by the Virginia High School League.

The Clinch Mountain District was dissolved in 2015 to create the newly formed Mountain District.

The AAA Northern Region was one of the four AAA regions in the Virginia High School League. It was made up of four districts: the AAA Concorde District, the AAA Liberty District, the AAA National District, and the AAA Patriot District. Group AAA is the largest enrollment class for VHSL schools, and typically AAA is the most competitive level as well. In 2013, the three classification format was eliminated in favor of a six classification system. Accordingly, the Northern Region was eliminated, while the districts were retained for regular season competition.
The AA Valley District is a district in Region III of the Virginia High School League. As the district's name implies, all the schools are located in the central part of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, along Interstate 81. Most of the member schools are part of the Harrisonburg and Staunton areas.
The AAA Western Valley District was a high school conference in the state of Virginia that included the small number of schools in Central and Southwest Virginia which competed in Group AAA, is largest enrollment class of the Virginia High School League.

The AA Highlands District was a high school conference of the Virginia High School League that included schools from Southwest Virginia, mostly in the Bristol and Kingsport areas. The schools of the Highlands District competed in AA Region IV with the schools in the AA Piedmont District and the AA Southwest District. The district dissolved in 2007 after two of its members, Lee High School and Virginia High dropped to Group A with the formation of the Clinch Mountain District, which prompted Abingdon High School and Marion High School to move to the Southwest District.
The Southwest District is a high school conference of the Virginia High School League that includes schools from southwestern Virginia, United States. The Southwest District was established in the former AA Region IV.

Clinch Mountain is a mountain ridge in the U.S. states of Tennessee and Virginia, lying in the ridge-and-valley section of the Appalachian Mountains. From its southern terminus at Kitts Point, which lies at the intersection of Knox, Union and Grainger counties near Blaine, Tennessee, it runs in a generally east-northeasterly direction to Garden Mountain near Burke's Garden, Virginia. It separates the Clinch River basin, to the north, and the Holston River basin, to the south.

In Virginia, the highway runs 88.89 miles (143.05 km) between two pairs of twin cities: Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia, at the Virginia–Tennessee state line, and Bluefield, Virginia and Bluefield, West Virginia, at the Virginia–West Virginia state line. U.S. Route 58 Alternate is a 87.40-mile-long (140.66 km) alternate route to US 58 in western Virginia. The route is a northern bypass to US 58 which stays closer to the Tennessee border and serves Gate City and Bristol.
Virginia High School is a high school located in Bristol, Virginia. In 1999, Virginia High started offering the Tri-Cities area's first International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Classes from the Advanced Placement program are also offered to help students who are headed to college. A career and technical wing was added to the main school building to help students who wish to go into a trade straight from high school. Courses offered for this path include: culinary arts, cybersecurity, engineering and manufacturing, coding, business, horticulture, auto-mechanics, building trades, and nursing.
Patrick Henry High School is a public high school in Glade Spring, Virginia. It was built in 1960 as a result of the consolidation of Glade Spring High School and Meadowview High School and named after founding father Patrick Henry. The school is located on a 32 acre campus in Glade Spring, Virginia.
Eidson is an unincorporated community located on the north side of Clinch Mountain in Hawkins County, Tennessee, United States. It is part of the Kingsport–Bristol (TN)–Bristol (VA) Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.
