Columbia Central Fire Station, also known as Columbia Fire Department Headquarters and Senate Street Station, is a historic fire station located at Columbia, South Carolina. It was built between 1949 and 1951, and consists of two buildings and a structure. The main building is a two-story, rectangular, brick building in the Moderne / International Style. It has a flat roof and features horizontal bands of windows. The one-story, brick fire truck garage building and the main building were constructed in 1949–1950. The drill tower is a six-story reinforced concrete structure built in 1951. The complex served as the Columbia Fire Department's Headquarters from 1950 until 1995. [2] [3]

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. [1]

Oakland Mill United States historic place

Oakland Mill, also known as Oakland-Kendall Mill, is a historic textile mill complex located at Newberry, Newberry County, South Carolina. The original section was built between 1910 and 1912, with building expansion campaigns conducted in 1949-1950 and 1950–1951. The original section reflects Romanesque Revival style design influences. The complex includes the main mill building, a one-story brick office building, a two-story brick boiler house with a brick smokestack and auxiliary building, two masonry and concrete warehouses, two wood-frame auxiliary storage buildings, a railroad spur, two water towers, and a reservoir. The mill remained in operation until the 2000s.

Olympia Armory United States historic place

Olympia Armory is a historic National Guard armory located at Olympia, near Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina. It was built in 1936-1937 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The armory is a one-story, rectangular brick building with a barrel-vaulted roof and stepped parapeted end walls. The building displays Art Deco and Moderne design influences. It was used as a school gymnasium.

Horry-Guignard House United States historic place

Horry-Guignard House is a historic home located at Columbia, South Carolina. It was built before 1813, and is a two-story, late Federal style, modified I-house type frame dwelling. The front facade features a one-story, full-width balustraded porch supported by square columns. During the winter of 1813–1814, the main hall was widened from six feet to eleven feet. To do this, the house was sawed in half and the two ends were pulled apart to rest on two new foundations. It was probably built by Peter Horry (1747-1815), a Revolutionary War Colonel and Brigadier General of the South Carolina Militia. Later, the house was acquired by John Gabriel Guignard (1751-1822), the Surveyor General of South Carolina from 1798 to 1802. Guignard is responsible for the early design of the city and laid out the first streets of Columbia.

Taylor House (Columbia, South Carolina) United States historic place

Taylor House, also known as the former home of the Columbia Museum of Art, is a historic home located at Columbia, South Carolina. It designed by the architectural firm of Andrews, Jacques and Rantoul and built in 1908, as a two-story, "L"-shaped, brick Neo-Classical style mansion. The front facade features a projecting portico supported by large, fluted limestone Corinthian order columns. It was built for Thomas Taylor, Jr., who served as president of Taylor Manufacturing Company. In 1950, the Columbia Museum of Art converted the house for use as a museum. The museum added three wings. The original stables are joined to the main house by the Science Museum wing.

Sylvan Building, originally known as Central National Bank, is a historic commercial building located at Columbia, South Carolina. It was built in 1870, and is a three-story, brick Second Empire style building designed by Samuel Sloan. It features a slate-covered mansard roof.

Union Station (Columbia, South Carolina) United States historic place

Union Station, also known as Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and Southern Railway Station, is a historic train station located at Columbia, South Carolina. It was built in 1902, and is a brick and stone, eclectic Jacobethan Revival / Tudor Revival building. It features stepped gables and towering chimneys. It was designed by architect Frank Pierce Milburn for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and Southern Railway. In contrast to the custom of 'union station' denoting the single station for several railroads, the Seaboard Air Line Railroad had its own station one-half mile away. The formerly Seaboard Silver Star still operates through another station in Columbia.

Town Theatre is a historic community theatre located at Columbia, South Carolina. It was built in 1924, and is a rectangular brick building with a two-story glazed central arch with Art Deco influences. A brick annex was added to the rear of the building in the 1950s. It houses one of the first community theatres in the United States.

It was built by 1871, and is a two-story, seven bay, stuccoed brick building. A cast-iron railing extends across central three bays of the second floor. The Capitol Café has been located in the building since 1913.

It was built in 1903, and is a 12-story, steel frame building faced in brick and stone. It measures 184 feet high and is considered Columbia's first skyscraper. The building was owned by the Barringer Corporation from 1953 until 1974.

Confederate Printing Plant United States historic place

Confederate Printing Plant is a historic industrial building located at Columbia, South Carolina. It was built in 1864, and is a large two-story, Greek Revival style brick structure. Originally it was a one-story structure, but enlarged to two-stories after the building was burned in February 1865 by General William Tecumseh Sherman’s army. It was built by the Evans and Cogswell Company for the manufacture of Confederate bonds and other printing purposes. During the 20th century, it was used as a liquor warehouse by the South Carolina Dispensary and is presently used as a Publix grocery store and residential condominiums.

It was built in 1894, and is a four-story, rectangular brick mill building. It features a seven-story stair tower, with a circular vent flanked by two arched vents. Attached to the building are an engine room, a boiler room with chimney, and a machine shop.

It was built in 1899, and consists of a four-story, red brick, rectangular shaped, main mill building connected to a one and two-story red brick power plant. The main building is in the Romanesque Revival style and features terra cotta detailing, large segmental arched window openings, and twin pyramidal roofed towers. The complex also includes: a one-story brick power plant auxiliary building, a one-story storage building, and two small brick one-story gatehouses.

It was built in 1926–1927, and is a three-story, rectangular brick structure with a central courtyard. It features Gothic window tracery, arched entrances with one-story porches, and decorative cast stone panels. It was the first junior high school building in South Carolina.

Efirds Department Store United States historic place

Efird's Department Store, also known as Lourie's Department Store, is a historic department store building located at Columbia, South Carolina. It was built about 1870, and is a rectangular brick building renovated and expanded in 1919. This included the addition of a third story and the installation of a new brick façade and store entrances. Between 1919 and 1958, it housed the Columbia branch of the Charlotte, North Carolina based Efird's Department Store chain. It currently houses a Mast General Store, which moved in on May 25, 2011.

Cedar Rapids Central Fire Station United States historic place

Cedar Rapids Central Fire Station, also known as Cedar Rapids Hose Company No. 1 and the Cedar Rapids Science Station, is a historic building located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States. It served as the city's fire department headquarters and downtown fire station from 1918 to 1985. It replaced a frame structure in the northeast quadrant, and was part of a larger program of building new facilities for the local fire department. The building program was a response to a series of disastrous fires, changing technology, and the city's growth. This fire station served from the era of horse-drawn pumper wagons to the modern era of fire engines, pumpers, and hook and ladder trucks. The two-story, brick Mission and Spanish Colonial Revival structure was designed by local architect Charles A. Dieman. In the mid-20th century a two-story kitchen addition was built onto the back of the building.
