The Cotinguiba Formation is a geologic formation of Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian to Coniacian) [1] age in the northeastern Brazil's Sergipe-Alagoas Basin. The Formation is composed of carbonates with clastic intercalations, moreover, the two members dividing it, the Sapucari and Aracaju members, are defined by the proportion of said carbonates. [2] It also possesses a rich macroinvertebrate fauna, of which stands out its bivalve mollucs, gastropods, ammonites, as well as equinoderms and crustaceans. [3]
On average, the Cotinguiba Formation had a thickness of around 200 meters, although in some sections over 1000 meters have been measured. It is formed by carbonates with clastic intercalations, and it is also divided into two members, the Aracaju and Sapucaru Members. Said members are defined by the proportions of these carbonates within them. [2] It is 200 km long and 5–10 km wide parallel to the coast. It is mainly composed by limestone–marlstone couplets, with sandstones, coquinas and limestone breccias being included in some places. These sediments were largely produced by algae and bioeroders on a shallow-water ramp. The origin of such rocks has been related with the seasonal oscillations of phytoplankton productivity, mud content and calcium production. The Turonian laminated carbonates of the Sergipe Basin have been associated with orbital-climatic-driven cycles. [4]
The Cotinguiba Formation formed as result of a transgressive event which ended in the drowning of the shallow platform of the Riachuelo Formation. [3]
Various works have discussed the paleontology of the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, where the Cotinguiba Formation is found. Among the first works on the formation, are highlighted those by Dr. C. A. White in 1887 and Maury in 1936, which described the various species of ammonites, bivalves, gastropods and equinoderms. [3]
The first biochronostratigraphic study based on ammonites was done by G. Beurlen in 1970, followed by others like Reyment and Bengtson. [1]
Although not as abundant as the Riachuelo Formation fauna that precedes it, the Cotinguiba Formation contains a very diversified macrofauna, including ammonites and inoceramid bivalves. [1]

Sergipe, officially State of Sergipe, is a state of Brazil. Located in the Northeast Region along the Atlantic coast of the country, Sergipe is the smallest state in Brazil by geographical area at 21,910 square kilometres (8,460 sq mi), larger only than the Federal District. Sergipe borders Bahia to the south and west and Alagoas to the north. Aracaju is the capital and the largest city in the state; the state is divided into 75 municipalities. The state has 1.1% of the Brazilian population and produces only 0.6% of the Brazilian GDP.
The Chalk Group is the lithostratigraphic unit which contains the Upper Cretaceous limestone succession in southern and eastern England. The same or similar rock sequences occur across the wider northwest European chalk 'province'. It is characterised by thick deposits of chalk, a soft porous white limestone, deposited in a marine environment.
The Neuquén Group is a group of geologic formations found in Argentina. Rocks in the Neuquén Group fall within the Cenomanian to early Campanian stages of the Late Cretaceous Period. It overlies the older Lohan Cura Formation and is itself overlain by the younger Allen Formation of the Malargüe Group, separated from both by unconformities, dated to 98 and 79 Ma respectively.
Prionosuchus is an extinct genus of large temnospondyl. A single species P. plummeri, is recognized from the Early Permian. Its fossils have been found in what is now northeastern Brazil.
The Santos Basin is an approximately 352,000 square kilometres (136,000 sq mi) large mostly offshore sedimentary basin. It is located in the south Atlantic Ocean, some 300 kilometres (190 mi) southeast of Santos, Brazil. The basin is one of the Brazilian basins to have resulted from the break-up of Gondwana since the Early Cretaceous, where a sequence of rift basins formed on both sides of the South Atlantic; the Pelotas, Santos, Campos and Espírito Santo Basins in Brazil, and the Namibia, Kwanza and Congo Basins in southwestern Africa.
The Paraná Basin is a large cratonic sedimentary basin situated in the central-eastern part of South America. About 75% of its areal distribution occurs in Brazil, from Mato Grosso to Rio Grande do Sul states. The remainder area is distributed in eastern Paraguay, northeastern Argentina and northern Uruguay. The shape of the depression is roughly elliptical and covers an area of about 1,500,000 km2 (580,000 sq mi).
The Cotinguiba River is a river in Sergipe, a state in northeastern Brazil. Its source is between the municipalities of Areia Branca and Laranjeiras. It flows into the Sergipe River at the border of the municipalities of Laranjeiras and Nossa Senhora do Socorro. It is approximately 50 kilometres (31 mi) long with a basin of 232.5 square kilometres (89.8 sq mi). The Cotinguiba River is one of the main tributaries of the right bank of the Sergipe River, and flows into the Sergipe in a river bed in the form of an estuary. It passes through the municipalities of Areia Branca, Riachuelo, Laranjeiras and Nossa Senhora do Socorro.
San Cassiano Formation (Anisian-Carnian) is a geologic formation located on the Southern Alps in the Dolomites. These Triassic dolomites are considered to be a classic example of ancient carbonate platforms. As the allochthonous elements in the Shale strata show a good preservation, fossils and microbialites contained in these elements are useful in detailed geochemical analyses.
The Botucatu Formation is an Aptian geologic formation of the Paraná and Pelotas Basins in southern Brazil and northern Uruguay. The formation is composed of quartzitic sandstones, deposited in an eolian environment. Fossil theropod tracks have been reported from the formation.
The Mata Amarilla Formation is a fossiliferous formation of the Austral Basin in southern Patagonia, Argentina. The formation consists of sediments deposited during the Middle Cenomanian, dated to 96.94 to 95.52 Ma. The middle section of the formation was previously considered to be the Pari Aike Formation.
The Conejo Formation (Spanish: Formación Conejo, K2C, Kscn) is a fossiliferous geological formation of the Altiplano Cundiboyacense, Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes. The uppermost unit of the Villeta Group, a sequence of shales and sandstones dates to the Late Cretaceous period; Turonian, Coniacian and Santonian epochs, and has a maximum thickness of 1,022 metres (3,353 ft).
The Juréia Formation is a geological formation of the Santos Basin offshore of the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina. The predominantly shale with interbedded siltstones and fine sandstones formation dates to the Late Cretaceous period; Santonian-Maastrichtian epochs and has a maximum thickness of 2,000 metres (6,600 ft). The formation is a reservoir rock of the Merluza Field, the first discovery in the Santos Basin.
The Guarujá Formation is a geological formation of the Santos Basin offshore of the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina. The predominantly calcarenite formation with marls dates to the Early Cretaceous period; Early Albian epoch and has a maximum thickness of 2,500 metres (8,200 ft). The formation is the second-most important post-salt reservoir rock of the Santos Basin.
The Pelotas Basin is a mostly offshore sedimentary basin of approximately 346,000 square kilometres (134,000 sq mi) in the South Atlantic, administratively part of the southern states Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul of Brazil and the departments Cerro Largo, Rocha and Treinta y Tres of Uruguay.
Bachea is an extinct genus of ray-finned fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous in what is now central Colombia, South America. The type species is B. huilensis, described in 1997 by María Páramo from the Turonian of Huila, Colombia.
The Agrio Formation is an Early Cretaceous geologic formation that is up to 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) thick and is located in the southern Mendoza Province and northern-central Neuquén Province, in the Neuquén Basin of northwestern Patagonia, Argentina. This formation is the youngest one of the Mendoza Group, overlying the Mulichinco and Bajada Colorada Formations and overlain by the Huitrín and La Amarga Formations. It is dated to the Late Valanginian to Early Hauterivian, Late Valanginian to Early Barremian, or Hauterivian to earliest Aptian.
The Itaboraí Formation is a highly fossiliferous geologic formation and Lagerstätte of the Itaboraí Basin in Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. The formation reaching a thickness of 100 metres (330 ft) is the defining unit for the Itaboraian South American land mammal age (SALMA), dating to the Early Eocene, approximately 53 to 50 Ma.
Babinskaiidae is an extinct family of neuropterans known from the Cretaceous period. They are part of the superfamily Myrmeleontoidea. Their distinguishing characters include: "long filiform antennae, narrowly elongated wings, with features such as trichosors, and presectorial cross veins present in both wings, and absence of forewing oblique vein". They are considered transitional between Nymphidae and more derived myrmeleontodoids, such as antlions.
The Riachuelo Formation is a geologic formation of the Early to Late Cretaceous age in northeastern Brazil's Sergipe-Alagoas Basin. It is the first Formation of the Basin to contain sediments deposited under fully marine conditions. The formation is subdivided into three members: Angico, Taquari and Maruim.
The Sergipe-Alagoas Basin is a continental margin basin in the Sergipe and Alagoas states of northeastern Brazil, about 20 to 50 kilometres wide onshore, but with its widest extension offshore, more precisely 13,000 km2 onshore and 40,000 km2 offshore. In general, "Sergipe-Alagoas Basin" refers to the Sergipe and Alagoas sub-basins, but it also consists of the Jacuípe and Cabo sub-basins. Studies of the basin's geology date back to the first half of the 19th century, when J. Henderson in 1821 published preliminary notes on the region's geology.
