The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) [1] is a non-governmental privately held national-level [2] [3] board of school education in India that conducts the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Examination for Class X and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) for Class XII. [4]

History

It was established in 1958. [5] Over 2750 schools in India and abroad are affiliated to the CISCE. [2] It is also recognized as a 'Non-Governmental National Board of Secondary Education'. [6] CISCE conducts ICSE exam for Class 10 and ISC exam for Class 12 like CBSE conducts AISSE for Class 10 and AISSCE for Class 12.

Derozio Award

The Derozio Award is an annual prize awarded to the top Indian educationists by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations. [7] [8] It was instituted in 1999 in memory of Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, a poet and educator from West Bengal. It is the highest award conferred by the council for contributions in the field of education. [9]

Curriculum

The ISCE and ICE syllabi intend to incorporate comprehensive and application-based learning concepts. This board includes an extensive curriculum, particularly in English, which covers a range of literary works, including Shakespearean plays such as The Merchant of Venice and The Tempest. [10] The English curriculum is divided into two examinations: English Language and Literature in English. The English Language examination tests a candidate's fundamentals in linguistic learning, including various questions in areas such as Essays, Directed Writings, Reading Comprehension and Basic Grammar Skills. The board conducts the examination during the period of February–March. Previously it was taken in March to April every year. Successful candidates are awarded the Secondary School Completion Certificate, a statement of marks, and a migration certificate stating that the candidate has completed secondary schooling and can pursue higher education. For the academic year 2016–17, the Central Board of Secondary Education has revived the old system of syllabus and marking scheme (complete syllabus for All India Secondary School Examination and marks out of 500. India has state exams and central exams.
